Sergei was ready to act, otherwise how else could they chat differently.
Seeing Sergei’s fearless demeanor, Gao Yang thought it was best not to draw guns yet. Things hadn’t reached a dead end; if they resorted to shooting, it would be difficult to ease the situation afterward.
So Gao Yang casually said, "Aren’t you going to reconsider? Or, will you allow me to make a phone call first?"
Sergei coldly responded, "No need. I’d advise you not to move recklessly. Here they come!"
Suddenly, four people burst out from the small doors on both sides, all pointing guns at Gao Yang. With a helpless look, Gao Yang said, "Well, this is a bit troubling indeed."
If Gao Yang got to make a phone call, he would call Baskov. As the current captain of the Black Demon, Baskov would definitely grant him this favor.
Of course, Baskov would be giving face to Yarebin, but as long as the current crisis could be resolved, it would suffice.
If possible, Gao Yang didn’t want to use his ace card, Baskov, because it could only be used once at most. Baskov, having once been part of the Black Demon, would help him but not indefinitely.
To use his biggest ace like this, Gao Yang truly felt reluctant, but the situation forced him to utilize it.
Even if Sergei didn’t allow the call, it didn’t matter, as long as Gao Yang knew the number. In a different setting, simply having Sergei dial the number would have the same effect.
"Raise your hands, don’t move to avoid misunderstandings, and have your bodyguards put down their guns and wait to be dealt with! Otherwise, I will have to order them to be shot."
Sergei Leonov coldly ordered Gao Yang, who, with four rifles aimed at his head, smiled wistfully, obediently raised his hands, and loudly said, "I suggest you take care of my pistol, because you’ll need to return it to me later. If you get my gun dirty, I’ll be unhappy."
Sergei coldly replied, "Enough with the nonsense! Have your men lay down their weapons!"
At this moment, a voice suddenly came from outside.
"Born in 1974 in Nizhny Novgorod, he entered the Frunze Military Academy in 1992 for reconnaissance training, joined GRU in 1995, and received the First Class Medal for Service to the Motherland in 1996 due to exceptional contributions. That’s all I’ll say. Am I right, Mr. Sergei Leonov, or should I say Anton Mogunov?"
Upon hearing the voice from outside, Sergei’s eyes widened, and he stammered, "Who! Who are you! Come in!"
Lebyazhef casually walked in from the doorway with his hands behind his back, standing silently and expressionlessly in front of Sergei.
Staring blankly at Lebyazhef, Sergei suddenly stood straight as if electrified, saluting loudly, "Good day, Instructor!"
Gao Yang widened his eyes, turning his head in astonishment towards Lebyazhef, while the four men, evidently members of the Russian Special Forces, remained motionless, continuing to aim their guns at Gao Yang’s head while two of them redirected their aim at Lebyazhef.
After Sergei saluted, Lebyazhef merely nodded and softly said, "Hm, alright."
Sergei, in a daze, said, "Old instructor, why are you here? What’s going on?"
Lebyazhef turned his head towards Abdullah and the others, and softly said, "Please leave, thank you."
Following that, Lebyazhef looked at the four armed soldiers, still hands behind his back, and expressionlessly said, "Leave."
The four soldiers remained unmoving, but they glanced at Sergei. Sergei, as if waking from a dream, loudly ordered, "All of you, leave, and you as well. Sorry, very sorry, we need to discuss some confidential matters, my apologies."
Abdullah and Said looked at each other, realizing that the originally calm and even a bit arrogant Sergei now seemed as if he had seen a ghost. They immediately knew they had encountered a real situation.
The four soldiers quickly retracted their guns and left, calling their comrades on the way out. Suddenly, ten Special Forces soldiers, who had appeared in the courtyard, miraculously disappeared without a trace.
Abdullah stood up and looked at Said, who, as if nothing had happened, smiled and said, "We’re all colleagues here; we understand, we understand. You chat, take your time to chat."
Once everyone had left, Sergei finally, with a perplexed expression, said, "Instructor, what on earth is going on?"
Lebyazhef looked at Gao Yang and said seriously, "He’s the captain. You should ask him. If he doesn’t want to say, then pretend nothing happened."
Sergei, distressed, said, "Old instructor, that won’t do! I’m here with orders to thoroughly investigate this matter."
Lebyazhef, still looking calm, said, "Aren’t you with GRU? When did you move to the Foreign Intelligence Service?"
Sergei softly replied, "Actually, I’m still with GRU. The Foreign Intelligence Service is a temporary identity for convenient operations."
The name GRU refers broadly to the Russian Military Intelligence Directorate, while the Foreign Intelligence Service is a subordinate department of the Russian Federal Security Service.
Gao Yang waved his hand dismissively, saying helplessly, "Forget it. At this point, hiding doesn’t make sense anymore. There’re certain things we all understand, but they can’t be spoken, at least not openly. By now, though, it hardly matters."
Gao Yang looked up at Sergei, and with a wry smile, said, "Let’s make it clear now. I wasn’t lying to you earlier; when you inquire about me from the President’s office, the only answer is that no such matter exists. Frankly, your rank simply isn’t high enough."
Sergei furrowed his brows even more tightly. Turning to Gao Yang with a conflicted expression, he said, "I shouldn’t have doubted your identity with the old instructor here, yet I must clarify some things, like who’s responsible for what’s happening in Yemen and why. I’m under orders to find out, but if I continue knowing nothing, there’s no way I can report back."
Gao Yang gestured with his hand, smiling, "May I ask, is your mission solely to investigate me?"
Sergei exhaled and said, "Sorry, I can’t say, but you must tell me what your true identity is!"
Gao Yang, feeling troubled, sighed, "There seems to be some miscommunication at the top. The issue now is that unless I receive a direct order, I can’t disclose anything. Privately, though, to clear up any misunderstanding, I think we can mutually share our missions without breaching confidentiality, but you should go first."
Sergei replied without hesitation, "I can’t say. Frankly, if the old instructor weren’t here, I should’ve taken you in for questioning. If you really have orders, you should consult your superiors. Now is the time."
Gao Yang spread his hands and said, "Looks like we’re at an impasse."
