Mercenary’s War

Chapter 2620 - 2596: A Monumental Misunderstanding

A single reference to me as Black Demon carries so many meanings.

Gao Yang didn’t know how to continue the conversation; the other Black Demon members and Baskov were all familiar, but Gao Yang and Baskov were not.

Baskov spoke first, and it was clear that he was very cautious when talking.

"Ram, I’d like to ask, you’re the leader of Black Demon now, so where do you intend to lead Black Demon?"

Baskov’s question left Gao Yang genuinely unsure how to answer. Where Black Demon would go was something he had never considered before because it was something for Yarebin and all Black Demon members to ponder. Now he’s taken over but hasn’t had time to consider it.

"I don’t know. I don’t know where Black Demon should head."

If he doesn’t know, he doesn’t know; it’s best to just be honest.

"Then what will you use Black Demon for? To achieve what purpose?"

"Uh, still don’t know."

Baskov remained silent for a long time, and Gao Yang felt Baskov was very unsatisfied with his answers.

After a while, Baskov finally said, "Alright, let me ask you something you know. I know what you did in Yemen, and I want to know the purpose behind your actions."

Gao Yang looked at Lebyazhef, gesturing a question. Lebyazhef hesitated for a moment, then gave Gao Yang a gesture that he could answer.

"Well, I’m doing all this in Yemen for money. Specifically, I deployed mercenaries on the side of the Shah People to get more business and squeeze out my competitors, so I stood for the Houthis Armed Forces in some matters. Can you understand it this way?"

"I understand, it’s like fighting your own hand."

Gao Yang found conversations with Baskov particularly difficult because Baskov always stopped mid-sentence and went quiet for a long time.

Finally, after another silence lasting several seconds, Baskov said, "I just received a call. I want to say there shouldn’t be any doubts about your identity now."

Gao Yang chuckled softly, "The results aren’t bad. We’ve resolved our troubles. Thank you."

Baskov suddenly raised his voice, "How are you operating over there? I know what you’re going to do, but I don’t know exactly how you’re doing it."

Gao Yang thought for a moment, "It’s simple, just normal things. Send troops to fight the Shah People, shell a bit, then use missiles to bomb a bit. That’s it."

Baskov went silent again, and Gao Yang was helpless, so he proactively said, "Actually, we didn’t do anything to harm Russia’s interests. Sure, everything we do will be perceived as Russia’s actions, but isn’t that advantageous for Russia?"

Baskov slowly replied, "Before we decided to initiate actions in Yemen to divert the Shah People’s attention, you had already gone over and acted. Do you call that not damaging Russian interests?"

"Not really, right?"

"If I told you we weren’t planning to do so because it would damage our already tense international relations, but you went ahead and did lots of things that shouldn’t be done in Yemen, causing the Houthis Armed Forces and Iranians to say it was our doing, making us inevitably bear the anger from the Shah People, do you call that not harming Russian interests?"

"Uh, fine, I have nothing to say."

Baskov coldly said, "The international intelligence community unanimously considers you as sent by Russia, and the Shah People and America unanimously believe Russia intends to meddle in Yemen affairs, thus achieving controlling Yemen to further control the Gulf of Aden. Eventually, by controlling the Gulf of Aden, controlling one of the world’s most crucial oil channels, we are under significant pressure."

Gao Yang sheepishly said, "Did it cause such a big reaction?"

Baskov’s tone suddenly changed, and he smiled, "The current diplomatic situation for Russia is not good, so we don’t plan to provoke too much hassle anymore. But, since the Shah People focused all their attention on Yemen and progressively increased their military power over there, we found the situation in Syria indeed improved a lot."

Gao Yang cautiously asked, "What do you mean?"

Baskov replied in a very affirmative tone, "Was this idea brought up by the captain?"

The captain Baskov mentioned was certainly Yarebin, but heaven can testify that stirring up trouble in Yemen was indeed Gao Yang’s idea. But now that Baskov asked this, Gao Yang certainly wouldn’t stupidly deny it.

"Yes, this plan was... proposed by the teacher."

Baskov sighed deeply and then said in a low voice, "I just knew it. I can tell; this is definitely the captain’s usual method."

Gao Yang laughed dryly twice, and Baskov continued, "The initial intention wasn’t to support the Houthis Armed Forces or do anything in Yemen, but after discovering the effect was indeed good and the Shah People would merely assume we were the schemers, then simply make it bigger, so to speak, your behavior prompted us to decide to support the Houthis Armed Forces."

Gao Yang laughed, "Because doing this has its benefits, and the benefits are evident."

Baskov lightly said, "The captain was very pained by the Soviet Union’s dissolution. He used to be hostile to Russia, but I know the captain’s view will change. Now it proves my point; the captain substantively supported Russia, helped us, and led Black Demon to force us to make the correct choice. Now I think the captain is very happy; things have developed as he expected. We’ve really sent troops, so he handed Black Demon to you."

This is a misunderstanding, a huge misunderstanding.

Baskov very seriously said, "I don’t know where you will lead Black Demon, and I can’t tell you either, but what I must tell you is to avoid bringing Black Demon against Russia. As long as you don’t do anything harming Russia’s interests, I will continue to support you with any possible help, just like I was willing to help the captain. But if you harm Russian interests, believe me, I will definitely eliminate you."

This massive misunderstanding has a great effect. Gao Yang seriously said, "You should know Black Demon, so please rest assured."

Baskov said in a low voice, "If there’s anything, contact me through this number. Give my regards to the captain, that’s all."

Baskov ended the call, and Gao Yang put down the phone, exhaled deeply, and laughed, "It went pretty well, haha, haha."

Vasily spat on the ground disdainfully and said, "Traitor! Still for Russia’s interests, I’m disgusted!"

Lebyazhef said awkwardly, "Don’t say that. Baskov’s heart is still with Black Demon; it’s just that he had no choice. The captain said not to call him a traitor anymore, remember not to say it in the future."
