Gao Yang waited in Sana’a for two days to handle their withdrawal matters.
Intelligence sharing is really just a matter of a phone number. Gao Yang is willing to provide intelligence to Sergei because, in a certain sense, it means he influences or even controls Sergei’s actions.
For instance, if Gao Yang wants to strike a target, he can completely hand over detailed intelligence to Sergei, and if Sergei hits the target, he also achieves his purpose. It’s a win-win situation.
Establishing a communication system requires some considerations. Firstly, one must ensure that the person communicating, Sergei, cannot reverse trace the call, even though the probability of such an occurrence is low, but it must be guarded against.
On the afternoon of the third day after Gao Yang’s arrival in Sana’a, as he was discussing matters over the phone with Yake, Joseph suddenly knocked on his door and then whispered outside, "Boss, Dmitry and his team have arrived and will soon be here."
After hanging up the phone, Gao Yang opened the door and said, "Where are they now?"
"Just contacted, they will be arriving shortly."
"Go meet them."
Gao Yang adjusted his clothes and walked outside the door with Joseph.
A SUV quickly stopped, and after Niva and Dmitry stepped out of the car, Niva hurriedly said, "Sir, what urgent matter requires both of us to come here? I’m worried that things might go awry with no one commanding the team."
Gao Yang didn’t speak; when Niva and Dmitry stepped in front of him, he stood straight and crisply saluted.
Initially, the two showed casualness, but seeing Gao Yang salute, they immediately stood straight and crisply returned the salute.
Gao Yang lowered his hand and said with a sentimental expression, "The urgency of calling you both over is indeed for a matter. Please come in; let’s discuss it inside the house."
After Niva and Dmitry sat down in the bedroom, Gao Yang smiled and said, "It’s quite simple here. Please don’t mind. The only praise-worthy thing here is the coffee. Jose, prepare the coffee, thank you."
After sending Joseph to prepare coffee, Gao Yang looked at Niva and Dmitry with hesitation, then said solemnly, "The reason for calling you here is because I am leaving."
Niva froze, saying, "You’re leaving? Where to?"
Gao Yang smiled and waved his hand, and Niva promptly said, "Oh, oh, can’t ask that."
Dmitry looked at Gao Yang with slight concern and said, "You’re leaving, then what about us?"
Niva followed with, "Exactly, what about us? Are we supposed to withdraw too?"
Gao Yang shook his head, saying, "It’s just me leaving. Perhaps our team has to leave, but you both are not leaving. Here’s the deal: both of you were recruited by me, now that I have another task to leave Yemen, and someone else will be sent here to take over my work, continuing with the current operations. I want to ask both of you whether you’re willing to stay."
Niva and Dmitry exchanged glances, both appearing somewhat serious.
Gao Yang said solemnly, "I brought you here, and if I leave, I can’t just leave you behind. If you don’t want to stay, it’s okay; I will fulfill my promise to send you wherever you want to go. If you choose to stay and accept leadership from someone sent from Russia, then all previously agreed benefits remain unchanged."
Niva slowly said, "We still trust you greatly, and under your command, I feel—how should I put it—extremely satisfied."
Dmitry also said, "We aren’t soldiers; soldiers’ duty is to obey orders. We don’t have the right to choose our superiors, but we obviously need to consider more. And we don’t know what kind of person your colleague is."
Gao Yang smiled, "Not colleagues; we are not colleagues."
Niva didn’t care much about Gao Yang’s explanation, sternly saying, "The money we earn here isn’t a big deal. What matters is, if someone else leads us, will we still receive adequate missiles as we do now? Okay, there’s not much point in this question. We are willing to serve you because you’re not some bureaucrat. You understand me? I’ve spent most of my life dealing with bureaucrats, and I’m fed up. I absolutely don’t want another jerk full of bureaucracy telling us what to do. I’ve had enough."
Joseph brought the coffee.
Gao Yang personally poured coffee into all three cups and said to Niva and Dmitry, "How about this: I’ll invite him over, and you can meet him. It’s not too late to make your decision afterward."
"Fine, let’s meet him."
Gao Yang waved to Joseph, saying, "Go invite Sergei over."
After Joseph left, Dmitry suddenly lowered his voice and said, "Sir, I just want to know, won’t be that our previous actions were too successful, resulting in restrictions on missile usage afterward?"
Gao Yang smiled, "I can’t guarantee things after I leave, so let’s have the successor come over and talk with you."
Joseph soon invited Sergei over.
Gao Yang stood up, pointed to Sergei, and said, "This is who I wanted you to meet. The rest, let’s let him introduce himself."
Niva and Dmitry also stood up, watching Sergei with scrutinizing eyes. Sergei said seriously, "Let me introduce myself. My name is Sergei Leonov, Senior Intelligence Officer of the Military Intelligence Bureau, with the rank of Major. This is my identification; please take a look."
Sergei took out an identification. Dmitry took it, glanced at it, nodded, and handed it to Niva. After taking it, Niva said, "I’ve never seen GRU identification, but it certainly isn’t fake, right? That’s unlikely."
Niva returned the identification to Sergei, who accepted it with a serious face, saying, "I will be taking over Mr. Peter Ram’s current task. Mr. Peter Ram has also briefed me about both of your situations. I can assure you now that Mr. Peter Ram’s promises remain valid."
Niva immediately asked, "Will the combat plan change? Will missile attack operations decrease, or will their scale be reduced?"
Sergei immediately said, "I can responsibly say it absolutely won’t—indeed, we might increase the intensity of missile usage. Both of you, your tasks will remain heavy. I can reveal a bit: we might even use longer-range, more powerful missiles to attack Saudi Arabia’s mainland."
Sergei displayed a military demeanor, avoiding unnecessary and redundant talk. Niva and Dmitry exchanged glances and nodded at each other.
"Both of you have proven your capabilities; Mr. Peter Ram strongly recommended both of you to me, and he assured your loyalty. Gentlemen, I sincerely invite you to stay and continue to create more splendid victories with us."
Niva glanced at Gao Yang, smiled and nodded, then turned to Sergei and saluted him, smiling, "Let’s do it. We’re staying!"
