Seeing Anthony nod at him, Kaxrak smiled and continued, "Now, as for how the mode you are going to challenge is determined, the answer is rather simple. This is the Tomb of The Lover Of Death, and you are within the Home of the Retired, meaning... the mode you challenge depends on the number of lives you’ve taken, or, to be more specific... the number of people you’ve blessed with death." A smile appeared on the Demon’s face.
Anthony couldn’t help but arch an eyebrow. He hadn’t expected the challenge to be determined in such a way. He simply shook his head with an amused smile; after all, it made perfect sense. He couldn’t help but look forward to where this was going.
"The Easy Mode is less than a hundred deaths. The Hard Mode ranges between a hundred to ten thousand deaths. The Hell Mode ranges from ten thousand deaths to one million deaths. And Nightmare Mode ranges between one million deaths to ten million deaths. While Impossible Mode ranges between ten million and a billion deaths. And of course, things like Monsters or Beasts aren’t counted," Kaxrak began to explain, his tone calm.
"But alas, things are hardly interesting these days. Many of these geniuses only end up around the Hard Mode, an ordinary ten thousand deaths, which is quite boring when I watch their easy challenge. It’s a bore," the Demon stated with a weak sigh.
Anthony didn’t speak, but he understood why the body count would always fall around the Hard Mode. It was simply because of the Cultivation Rank limit placed on The Sleeping Hollow. People of this level hardly had such insane numbers of kills under their belt. The only way to achieve higher numbers was if they included Monsters and such, which were already excluded.
So, unless they were some old Star Monarch cultivator, then their death count might enter the Hell Mode.
"Of course, there were a few brave people, those who thought outside the box," Kaxrak continued. "They challenged me, trying to take on all the Challenge Modes together so they could take all five rewards, but alas, I wiped them out." He shook his head as he spoke.
Anthony just stared at the Demon, as he knew the man probably hadn’t had anyone to talk to for the thousands of years The Sleeping Hollow had been inactive, hence why he was simply talking off-topic. But he didn’t interject; he merely watched in silence with a flat expression.
"I’m sorry... I tend to blabber sometimes," Kaxrak mused aloud.
With that final blabbering, a book immediately appeared in his hand, its pages flapping rapidly as he spoke.
"This book is called the Deaths Record. It records the number of deaths anyone whose name is written in it has caused," Kaxrak stated as the pages came to a stop.
A pen appeared in Kaxrak’s hand as he immediately wrote down Anthony’s name with a smile on his face. The moment he was done, Anthony felt The Perfect One skill activate as it blocked the function of the book.
"Huh? It didn’t work?" Kaxrak asked, a bit confused.
Anthony shook his head as he deactivated The Perfect One skill, not tampering with the information that the Deaths Record was trying to find. The moment he deactivated it, a huge blood-red heads-up display appeared in midair before Anthony and Kaxrak from the Deaths Record, various strings of numbers written in black visible on the heads-up display.
"Your number of deaths is—" The words froze in Kaxrak’s throat as the smile on his face vanished, an expression of shock appearing as he stared at the impossible number before him.
---
Name: Null Anthony.
Race: Human.
Death Count: Quintillion.
---
Top three death counts:
Demons: Quadrillions.
Angels: Quadrillions.
Vampires: Millions.
---
Anthony stared at the numbers too, then shook his head with a smile as he had expected something like this. He wasn’t surprised. Instead, he wanted to know what would happen when one exceeded the death count limit for the trial. Would they automatically gain all the rewards? It was an intriguing thought.
The Demons and Angels were understandable due to the final war before his ascension. As for the Vampires, well, they were the Second Supreme Monarch’s entire lineage. They had populated almost an entire small planet, so their numbers were anything but small.
"Ho... How... ca... can this... be?" Kaxrak asked as he swallowed hard. "Even... Mas...ter doesn’t hold these... impo...ssible... numbers," he stated, his voice a bit hitched.
The first ones on the ranking being those of his own kind made Demon Kaxrak even more speechless.
’Hoo!!! So even The Lover Of Death himself can’t match my number,’ he thought to himself with a smug smile as he heard Kaxrak’s words.
’If I was still on Earth, I might have to start tutoring Osama bin Laden and Hitler,’ he thought silently.
Kaxrak’s slit eyes turned towards Anthony. He didn’t dare think the Deaths Record was wrong or faulty. If the book had said it, then it was true. He couldn’t help but wonder if this Human was the Demon here.
’Am I a fake Demon or something?’ he thought to himself, wondering how a Human with such a handsome face could kill such an amount of people.
"I don’t fit into any of the Challenge Modes, so what now?" Anthony asked.
Hearing Anthony’s words, Kaxrak snapped out of his thoughts. A minor frown appeared on his face as he didn’t know how to proceed. But he didn’t have to think for long as the entire Home of the Retired seemed to respond, an ancient voice that sounded as though Death itself was speaking echoing throughout the land.
"The Unknown Mode has been activated for the Challenger, Null Anthony," the voice stated. "Due to the uniqueness of this event, the Challenger is allowed to decline and will instantly claim all rewards from the Easy Mode to the Impossible Mode. What does the Challenger choose?" The voice asked.
Anthony didn’t need to think. He knew that if an Unknown Mode existed and even Kaxrak didn’t know about it, then surely the reward would be so insane that all the rewards from the previous Modes put together would pale in comparison to it.
"I choose to challenge the Unknown Mode," his voice echoed.
Kaxrak stared at Anthony for a moment, then spoke, "You are a madman... Null Anthony, and I hope you survive whatever you’ve called upon."
The moment he was done speaking, he vanished from where he stood, appearing high up in the sky as he prepared to stay there and enjoy whatever was going to happen below. Anticipation and excitement filled his eyes.
"Your challenge has been accepted," the ancient voice echoed. "Your trial has been set. Entertain Death, young fledgling," the ancient voice stated, then vanished.
The moment it said those last words, everywhere began to tremble again as Anthony felt The Perfect One skill go off like a shrieking alarm. Anthony could only stare at the sky, wondering what was happening or coming.
