Chapter 10: Chapter 10 - what are we?

Ashley had not been asleep for very long. Very early in the morning, she was already awake, but she did not know what to do. Like anyone staying at someone else’s place for the first time, she did not really feel comfortable.

Should she get up? But what would she even do? Besides, Clara was clinging to her like a leech. The slightest movement was restricted.

So Ashley decided not to move, even though the position she was in was extremely uncomfortable.

’Romance movies have been lying to us,’ she thought.

’Having someone sleep in your arms gives you muscle aches.’

It was the first time she had ever slept with another person in such a romantic way.

’Okay... I need to move a little,’ she thought as she gently pushed Clara away.

But Clara immediately came back and pressed herself even closer against her, like a sloth holding onto a branch.

Ashley carefully looked at Clara’s face until she realized that Clara was only pretending to sleep.

"Could you move a little? I’m getting cramps from staying still for so long," she said, using a little more force this time.

But Clara immediately came back.

In reality, she had been pretending to sleep for a long time, just to tease Ashley.

"Nooo! I don’t want to," Clara replied.

Ashley still got up to go to the bathroom, then returned about thirty seconds later.

"It’s still early. What would you say if we had a little fun before getting ready for class?" Clara suggested.

"No, thank you. I need to go change at my place," Ashley replied while putting on her shoes.

Clara immediately ran to stop her.

"What? No. Let’s have breakfast first."

"I’ll take you back home, and then we’ll go to class together," she added, gently taking Ashley’s hand.

"Hmmf... Okay," Ashley replied reluctantly.

"Go take a shower. I’ll ask them to prepare something for us to eat. And I’ll find you some clothes to change into," Clara said before leaving the room.

In the shower, Ashley noticed that the bathroom was bigger than her small bedroom. There was a huge bathtub, a large mirror, and everything needed to make it feel like a luxury hotel.

As she felt the warm water running down her skin, Ashley felt her muscles slowly relax. A smile appeared on her face.

In her apartment, she was not used to taking hot showers.

After leaving the shower, her hair still wet, she stood in front of the large mirror. The mirror had become slightly foggy because of the steam, but she wiped the condensation away with a simple movement of her hand.

She stared at her reflection carefully.

’Am I really this pretty?’ she wondered while looking at her hazel eyes.

The answer that came to her was simple.

’I guess I could say I’m pretty.’

She was modest, but people had always told her that she was beautiful. Especially her roommates, who never stopped telling her that.

In that case...

Did Clara really love her for who she was?

Or was it only because of her beauty?

Before, she would have asked herself a different question.

’Could I love Clara... even though she’s a girl?’

But the way she thought had completely changed.

She finally left the bathroom, her hair still damp, wearing a bathrobe.

Clara arrived a few moments later with a tray.

"Let’s eat first. After that, I’ll do your makeup," she said excitedly.

"No, thank you. There is no way I’m wearing that," Ashley replied while lifting the clothes Clara had prepared on the bed.

"I’ll go change at my place."

Clara calmly placed the tray on the table.

Then, without warning, she grabbed Ashley’s clothes that were on a chair, ran into the bathroom, and locked the door.

Ashley had not seen it coming at all.

She stood frozen, her mouth slightly open.

"What are you going to do with my clothes?" she asked from in front of the closed door.

"You really don’t like being told no, do you?"

A few seconds later, Clara came out of the bathroom with Ashley’s clothes completely soaked.

She smiled before saying:

"You’re the one who keeps telling me no... and I don’t like that."

"Now, either you let me do this, or we’ll waste time arguing here. And believe me, I love seeing us argue like two lovers who are crazy about each other."

"Now, sit down, eat, and let me transform you into a goddess," she said while pulling out a chair and inviting Ashley to sit.

Ashley wanted to argue back, but no words came to her mind.

From an outsider’s perspective, Clara seemed to be controlling her.

Yet Ashley was not really against it.

She sat down without saying anything, then took a bite of her breakfast.

"You told me you would never force me to do something I didn’t want to do. Minus one point for you, liar," she said to Clara, who had just sat down beside her.

"What? But how many points did I have before this?" Clara asked.

"Don’t move... I’m almost finished," Clara said as she applied one last brushstroke to Ashley’s face, who kept her eyes closed.

"There!"

Ashley slowly opened her eyes and turned toward the mirror.

"Wow... I didn’t know I could look like this..." she whispered.

She had never really worn makeup before, only occasionally applying a little when she had the opportunity.

"Stand up," Clara asked.

Ashley did as she was told.

Her eyes widened for a moment before a wide smile appeared on Clara’s face.

Ashley was wearing an elegant brown and yellow dress that stopped just above her knees. Its simple yet refined cut naturally fell along her body without being tight, highlighting her figure with subtle grace. The outfit gave off a timeless elegance, as if the dress had been made specifically for her.

Her long hair framed her face, which was now enhanced by delicate makeup. Every detail seemed to emphasize her natural beauty without ever looking excessive.

"Wow... I wish I could show off my makeup skills, but only you can give me a result like this," Clara said, unable to take her eyes off Ashley.

’I should be careful... She is another person who might try to kidnap her now,’ Clara thought while looking at the young woman who looked like a magnificent doll sculpted with almost unreal perfection.

"I don’t think I should dress like this."

"People are going to think I’m trying too hard. Besides, I have to go to work today. This isn’t practical at all."

"Hey! Hey!" Clara said.

"People aren’t going to think you’re trying too hard. They’ll be too busy standing there with their mouths open in amazement."

"Trust me, your boss will thank you for bringing more customers to her shop. The boys will line up to buy your little cakes."

"Now, put these on," Clara added as she handed her a pair of boots that matched the dress.

"I now have to do my best not to look like a stain next to you," Clara said as she headed toward the bathroom.

Ashley didn’t understand why Clara said that when Clara herself was just as beautiful as her. With her long blonde hair, blue eyes, and gorgeous figure, she naturally attracted attention.

When they arrived at the university campus, Ashley kept her eyes lowered. People couldn’t stop looking at her, both men and women. She was not used to receiving this kind of attention.

Unlike her, Clara walked with her head held high. It was not the first time people had looked at her like that. She was used to receiving admiration, envy, and jealousy from others.

She laughed internally when she saw the embarrassed expression on Ashley’s face.

She wrapped her arm around Ashley’s, who was having trouble walking because of how uncomfortable she felt.

"You two are such bitches," said a rather pretty young woman wearing a white T-shirt and jeans.

It was Julia, their classmate and friend.

"Why didn’t you tell me we were going all out today?" she asked, pointing at their outfits.

"I wore jeans and a T-shirt to be comfortable. But I’ll never feel comfortable sitting next to you two."

"Sorry, but today is only between Ashley and me," Clara replied with a smile while holding Ashley’s arm even tighter.

"We’re celebrating our first night together," she added.

Ashley’s face immediately turned red.

She pinched Clara’s arm, causing her to let out:

"Ouch!"

"We only slept. Nothing else," Ashley explained.

"We don’t judge," Greg, another one of their friends, said.

"What do you mean, only slept? You’re forgetting the kisses and hugs you gave me," Clara protested.

Ashley pinched her arm again.

"Come on, Ashley! I was just joking," Clara explained.

But Ashley had not spoken to her since Clara’s joke when they arrived at the university.

Yet she was now sitting in Clara’s car, with Clara driving her to work.

Ashley would have preferred to walk there, but since this morning, three boys from her class had already asked for her phone number. She knew that if she walked to work, she would probably be approached constantly.

"Okay, I promise that from now on, I won’t joke about what happened between us in front of other people," Clara said, finally managing to get Ashley’s attention.

"And you also promise that you won’t force me to do something I don’t want to do?" Ashley asked.

"Promise!" Clara replied, finally receiving a satisfied look from Ashley.

"But there’s one condition," Clara suddenly added.

Ashley wanted to tell her to go to hell. She definitely would have said it if it had been someone else.

But strangely, she was curious about what the condition was.

"What condition?" she asked, trying to keep her tone as cold as possible.

"That I spend the night at your place tonight," Clara asked.

"What? Why do you want to sleep at my place when you have a huge mansion all to yourself?" Ashley asked.

Once again, before, she would have simply wondered why.

But things had changed.

"I just want to know you better. I want to stay where you live," Clara admitted with as much sincerity as she could.

Ashley looked at her once again.

She thought it might not actually be such a bad idea.

If Clara insisted that she loved her, then it shouldn’t change just because she saw the way Ashley lived.

"Okay, but I’m warning you. We’ll only sleep," Ashley replied.

When they arrived at her workplace, what Clara had feared finally happened.

The small shop where Ashley worked received far more customers than usual, mostly men.

There was even a married man who was flirting with Ashley, despite the fact that she was only twenty-one years old and he was already in his forties.

That evening, when they arrived at Ashley’s place, her roommates were amazed when they saw them return dressed like that.

They asked where they had been dressed so elegantly.

Ashley simply answered:

"Nowhere."

Sitting on her bed, Ashley waited for Clara, who had gone to take a shower in the shared bathroom.

She was patiently waiting to see Clara’s reaction when she discovered there was no more hot water.

But when Clara came back, still wearing her usual smile, Ashley was slightly disappointed.

Then, when it was finally her turn to take a shower, she was the one who became frustrated by the lack of hot water.

The warm shower she had taken that morning was already missed.

When she returned to her room, she saw Clara sitting on her bed, wearing one of her long nightshirts.

But she said nothing, knowing perfectly well that Clara was only waiting for her to make a comment.

’Not this time,’ Ashley thought as she put on a pair of shorts and a T-shirt.

"I’m warning you, I sleep on the right side of the bed," Ashley said as she lay down.

"That doesn’t matter," Clara replied.

"Besides, I would have preferred being above or below you," Clara retorted with a laugh.

Ashley said nothing, knowing very well that she had no chance of winning an argument against Clara.

Besides, she was a little nervous.

’What is she to me?’

’Are we dating?’

’Has she become my girlfriend?’

Ashley thought as she turned off the light.

Clara wrapped her arms around Ashley’s waist.

"I love you," she whispered.

After a few seconds, Ashley replied:

"Good night."

But after about twenty minutes, neither of them could fall asleep.

"Ashley..." Clara whispered.

"I really want to kiss you," she murmured, but Ashley remained silent.

"Can I kiss you?" she asked softly.

Still, there was no answer.

Then, after a few seconds, in a voice that was almost inaudible:

"Okay..." Ashley replied.

" But I’ll break your fingers if you let your hands wander where they shouldn’t."
