Chapter 20: Chapter 20 - fantasy
"Why didn’t you tell me she got married?" Ashley asked after Chloé revealed that the man she had seen with Clara was actually her husband.
"I didn’t want to tell you the moment you came back," Chloé defended herself. "I was going to tell you tomorrow. I just didn’t know you’d go looking for her tonight."
"Do you know who she married?" Ashley asked.
She hadn’t even seen the man’s face.
She’d been too busy trying not to die from a heart attack.
"Wait... you didn’t see his face?" Chloé asked, sounding surprised. "Oh... you’re really going to hate this."
"Who is it?" Ashley asked again.
"It’s Dylan."
"Dylan!?" Ashley exclaimed.
"You mean... Dylan. The guy who used to work with her. The one who was always ridiculously nice to everyone."
"That Dylan?" Ashley asked, just to make sure they were talking about the same person.
"Yep. The one you’ve always hated."
"That son of a bitch. I knew he had a crush on Clara. She kept telling me it was all in my head."
Ashley jumped to her feet, unable to believe it.
She had never liked Dylan. She’d always believed he had ulterior motives whenever he hung around their relationship.
"Shhh!" Chloé hissed, putting a finger to her lips.
"Don’t swear so loudly. Little Ashley will repeat those words for days if she hears you."
"Oh... sorry," Ashley said, suddenly remembering there was a child sleeping in the next room.
She smiled before wrapping Chloé in a hug.
"I’m really happy you named your daughter after me."
Chloé had named her little girl Ashley because, if it hadn’t been for Ashley, she never would have met the father of her daughter.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Someone was at the door.
"Were you expecting someone?" Ashley asked.
"No," Chloé replied as she walked over and opened it.
Standing outside was Clara.
She wore a long black coat and carried an elegant handbag.
The moment Chloé saw her, she opened the door wider.
Ashley and Clara’s eyes immediately met.
Ashley froze.
She didn’t know what to do.
She was scared...
Embarrassed...
And completely caught off guard.
"We need to talk," Clara said.
The firmness in her voice instantly snapped Ashley back to reality.
Without another word, Clara turned around and walked down the hallway.
Ashley silently followed her outside.
"Why did you come back?" Clara demanded, her voice cold.
"My life had finally gone back to normal, so why? Did you run out of money? Have you already spent my ten million dollars, or did you just come back to laugh in my face?"
Tears immediately rolled down Ashley’s cheeks.
This wasn’t how she’d imagined their reunion.
"Clara... I don’t know what you’ve been told, but I never stole your money. I was kidnapped. I’ve been held captive this entire time," Ashley pleaded.
"Stop lying to me!" Clara shouted. "I know you’re lying."
She pulled a large envelope from her bag.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Every single one showed Ashley sunbathing in the garden of a magnificent mansion.
The pictures were real.
’Those bastards... They really planned everything,’ Ashley thought as she flipped through them.
Her captors had occasionally allowed her outside under constant surveillance.
She often sunbathed because she spent most of her time locked inside her bedroom.
She had never imagined those moments were being used to frame her.
The only question now was...
How far had they gone?
And what other evidence did Clara have?
"Well?" Clara asked.
"Don’t you have another excuse ready this time?"
She didn’t even realize tears had started running down her own face.
Ashley stared at her.
No words came out.
She already knew the truth.
Nothing she said would convince Clara.
Slowly, Ashley stepped closer.
Instinctively, Clara took one step back.
Then Ashley wrapped her in a gentle hug.
Clara didn’t move.
" I’m so sorry," Ashley whispered.
She let go, turned around, and walked back into the apartment building without another word.
Clara simply stood there, watching her disappear.
She had gathered every ounce of courage she had to confront Ashley...
To expose all of her lies.
But instead...
Ashley hadn’t argued.
She hadn’t defended herself.
She had only apologized...
And walked away without looking back.
Ashley returned to Chloé’s apartment with red, swollen eyes.
"Honestly... you don’t look kidnapped in those pictures," Chloé said carefully.
"Are they real?"
"Yes," Ashley admitted. "They let me go outside once in a while to get some fresh air. I had no idea they were setting me up."
"I don’t think the police have those photos," Chloé said.
"If they did, the case against you would be much stronger."
"What?" Ashley frowned.
"But Clara just showed them to me. Why is she the only one who has them?"
That changed everything.
If Clara truly believed Ashley had stolen the money...
Why hadn’t she handed those photos over to the police?
Maybe...
Maybe a part of her still wasn’t completely convinced Ashley was guilty.
Ashley couldn’t be certain.
But she was determined to find out who had framed her.
She immediately started making a list of suspects.
First was Clara’s father.
He had never liked Ashley, and he had more than enough power to orchestrate something like this without even the police discovering the truth.
Second was Dylan.
His family was influential, he was intelligent, and he had everything to gain by marrying Clara.
Third was Regina.
She was incredibly cunning, and she’d always enjoyed making Ashley’s life miserable.
Fourth was Carl, Clara’s brother.
He had never liked Ashley, but he wasn’t smart enough to pull off something this elaborate unless someone else had been helping him.
Those were Ashley’s main suspects.
Most of them had secrets Ashley knew about that could become a motive.
____
"Did you get the files you forgot?" asked a brown-haired man in his late twenties, standing around six feet tall.
"Hmm?... Yeah, here they are," Clara replied.
She had lied to her husband, telling him she’d forgotten an important file at work when, in reality, she’d gone to see Ashley.
The man stepped closer, gently cupped her cheek, and kissed her deeply.
Clara lightly pushed him away.
"I’m going to take a shower," she said.
Being with a man still felt strange to her ,let alone being married to one.
She had never been attracted to men her entire life. But after years of terrible luck with women, and with her entire family refusing to accept that she was a lesbian, she’d eventually thought... Why not give it one last try?
Dylan had always been kind and supportive, especially after everyone turned against her when Ashley was accused of running away with her money.
The scandal had been disastrous for the reputation of the future CEO of her father’s company.
So Clara had made a drastic decision.
She was going to prove she wasn’t some naïve fool.
She started dating Dylan, and it had taken her nearly five months just to get used to being in a relationship with a man.
Thankfully, Dylan had been patient. He never pressured her and waited until she felt ready.
They got married surprisingly quickly, and Clara’s family couldn’t have been happier. Even her father, who had barely spoken to her before, had become warm and affectionate again.
Clara locked the bathroom door behind her.
She stared at herself in the mirror before slowly closing her eyes.
Her mind drifted back to seeing Ashley.
She could still remember her scent... the scent she’d missed so much.
She slipped out of her clothes and let freezing cold water pour over her head, hoping it would clear her thoughts.
It didn’t.
No matter how cold the water was, Ashley was still the only thing on her mind.
She closed her eyes again, trying to picture her former lover as clearly as possible...
She slowly slid one of her hands between her legs, gently touching herself as thoughts of Ashley filled her mind.
She still hadn’t forgiven her...
But Ashley was the only person she’d ever known who could bring her to an orgasm so intense it would send her drifting straight into Morpheus’ arms.
Click.
The sound of the bathroom door handle snapped Clara back to reality.
She immediately turned off the water and grabbed a towel.
"Why’d you lock the door?" Dylan asked with a smile from the other side.
"Just a force of habit," Clara replied, knowing he’d understand what she meant.
"Do you need to use the bathroom?" she asked.
"Uh... no. I just wanted to make sure you were okay. You’ve been in there for a while."
"I’m fine."
"Okay," Dylan said before heading back to bed.
Clara closed the bathroom door again, but this time she left it unlocked.
She stood in front of the mirror once more, staring into her own reflection.
’ What the hell are you doing, Clara? ’ she thought.
’ You’re touching yourself while thinking about the woman who destroyed your life...
And you’re a married woman now. ’
She knew she couldn’t force herself to think about anyone else.
She was still hopelessly in love with Ashley.
Taking a deep breath, she made up her mind.
She wrapped the towel around herself and walked out of the bathroom.
Seeing her standing there completely naked, Dylan immediately sat up in bed.
"Why are you naked?" he asked.
To most married couples, the question would’ve sounded ridiculous. They were alone in their bedroom, after all.
But for them, it made perfect sense.
They rarely had sex, and when they did, it was usually in complete darkness.
But Dylan had known exactly what he was signing up for when he married a lesbian.
"I want you to fuck me," Clara said quietly as she climbed onto the bed and reached for his pants.
The situation caught Dylan completely off guard. He had never expected Clara to say something like that.
Still, what man in his right mind wouldn’t be excited hearing that?
He leaned in and kissed her without hesitation. Normally, Clara wasn’t particularly fond of kissing, but to his surprise, she kissed him back. Encouraged, he grew more confident.
He slipped off his shirt, gently turned her onto her back, kissed her chest, and ran his hands over her body.
Her eyes were closed, and her body responded instinctively. Desire rushed through him.
" Put it in" Clara whispered.
He didn’t need to be told twice.
It was the first time that month she’d willingly let him touch her like this, even though she had always been affectionate with him in public.
For a brief moment, Dylan felt as though things between them might finally be changing.
Clara arched her back as he entered her, a soft moan escaping her lips. Her eyes remained tightly shut.
She might have been gay, but Dylan was kind, handsome, and comforting.
Even if he wasn’t one of the men she and Ashley had once jokingly admitted they would have slept with during one of their late-night pillow talks.
He was her husband.
That had to mean something.
Right?
Clara shifted, taking control of their rhythm, and Dylan offered no resistance.
His hands rested on her hips as they moved together.
She could feel him inside her, and the physical pleasure was undeniable.
But with her eyes closed, the person in her mind wasn’t the man sharing her bed.
She pictured Ashley instead.
Not herself making love to Ashley...
But Ashley making love to her.
The fantasy became so vivid that she unconsciously quickened her pace.
A few moments later, Dylan shuddered before reaching his climax.
Clara had been close herself...
But not close enough.
She leaned down and kissed him passionately. She knew that admitting she hadn’t finished would only make things awkward between them, and what she needed from their marriage was emotional support far more than physical intimacy.
"Wow..." Dylan breathed with a satisfied smile. "That was... amazing."
"Yeah... amazing," Clara replied, only half meaning it.
"I’m going to wash up," she said softly before getting out of bed.
She stepped back into the shower.
Her second shower lasted nearly forty minutes.
