Chapter 58: Chapter 58 - double date

Clara was focused on her phone while Ben was going over some important reports concerning their company.

"Hey! Would you be up for a triple date with me and Ashley, Olivia from HR, and her new girlfriend?" Clara asked, interrupting him.

"Why are you asking me that? I don’t have anyone to bring to the date. Besides, from what you just said, I’d be the only guy. So, no," Ben said.

"You don’t have anyone to bring? What about the pretty therapist you’ve been seeing?" Clara asked.

"We just see each other a few times a week. We’re not officially a couple."

Mackenzie was in the middle of a divorce, but they still talked every day, so Ben wasn’t worried. He would get the girl eventually.

"What?! But have you at least slept together once?" Clara asked.

She had never been the passive or patient type, so she couldn’t understand why Ben was taking so long to make a move on the woman.

"Excuse me, but that’s none of your business. Besides, I was telling you that your ex-husband is stealing our clients, and you’re talking to me about a date. Do you even remember that you’re the CEO? You’re the one who’s supposed to tell us what we should do about this kind of urgent problem," Ben said.

He had initially come in, panicking, to deliver some bad news, but somehow, he ended up lecturing his boss for acting like she didn’t care about the urgent problem they were facing.

"Don’t worry about what Dylan is doing. I have the situation completely under control," Clara said calmly, even though Ben had never seen her do anything about it, and the situation seemed urgent.

"Are you sure?" Ben asked.

"Absolutely," Clara replied, once again ignoring Ben to answer a text from Ashley.

Ashley had told her that Elena and Olivia had invited them on a double date.

Clara had hoped Elena would stop keeping in touch with Ashley now that she was in a relationship, but apparently, she was going to have to put up with her for a long time.

Still, Clara was happy with herself after convincing Olivia to date Elena. Now she no longer considered Elena a threat.

Not that she had ever been one.

After work, Clara went to Ashley’s apartment to get ready for the double date.

"I don’t like this," Clara said, holding a beautiful gold bracelet that had just come out of its box.

"What? You don’t like it? I bought the nicest and most expensive one I could find for you," Ashley said.

It was the first major purchase Ashley had made after receiving the large check from Esther for saving her.

"No, that’s not what I mean. I love the bracelet. But I don’t like the way our roles are changing. I’m supposed to be the one spoiling you with gifts, while you’re the one who keeps forgiving me every time I screw up," Clara explained.

She had always been the person Ashley depended on, and she was afraid that would change now that Ashley was becoming financially independent.

"Stop. Nothing is going to change between us just because I’ve made some money," Ashley said. She couldn’t imagine living without Clara, even if she became a millionaire one day.

"You might be right, but I think we should get married as soon as possible and adopt a bunch of kids, so you can keep your promise of being a stay-at-home mom after we have children," Clara said.

"I’m willing to marry you whenever you want, but there’s no way I’m becoming a stay-at-home mom right away. I want to do everything I want to do first. Then we can have as many babies as you want," Ashley said.

Before, she would have jumped at the opportunity to finally have a family. Now, even though it was still what she wanted most, she preferred not to rush into it.

She walked over to Clara and took the bracelet from her before putting it around her wrist.

"So, what do you think?" she asked Clara.

"It’s beautiful, babe. Thank you so much," Clara said before giving Ashley a kiss.

---------

"Why have you never told me you were gay and that you were dating someone this gorgeous?" Angela, one of Elena’s coworkers, asked.

Olivia had come to pick Elena up from work so they could go on the double date Elena had suggested. She had suggested the double date because she wanted to find a way to get back at Clara and Olivia for making fun of her.

"Why would I tell you about my relationships? I don’t even know if you have a boyfriend or not," Elena replied.

"I do. We’ve been together for eight years, and we have a seven-year-old son together," Angela told her.

It was true that Angela was just as private about her family life.

"Your girlfriend looks pretty rich, judging by the way she dresses," Angela said.

Elena looked at Olivia, who was reading a book a little farther away. She was wearing a professional black skirt suit paired with a crisp white blouse.

She looked incredibly charismatic.

Olivia noticed Elena and her coworker looking at her, so she smiled and waved.

Elena waved back.

"How did you manage to land someone that gorgeous?" Angela asked, comparing Elena and her girlfriend. Elena was cute, but their styles and overall appearances were completely different.

"I guess I’m lucky," Elena lied with a fake smile.

She certainly wasn’t going to tell her coworker, Actually, she’s not really my girlfriend. She’s only pretending to be because her boss, who hates me, told her to.

"Yeah... If I were you, I’d go buy a lottery ticket because you’ve got a pretty good chance of hitting the jackpot," Angela said.

Elena didn’t respond because Olivia was approaching them.

Angela decided to start rearranging some of the books on the shelves, giving them some privacy.

"You have some really great books here. I think I’m going to start coming here more often," Olivia said with a smile, leaning against the counter to get closer to Elena.

Elena moved away without answering, only giving her a small smile.

Olivia moved closer to her again.

"And what’s that room?" she asked.

"That’s the storage room," Elena replied.

That was where Ashley had once asked her to sleep with her. Even now, thinking about it, Elena still couldn’t believe it had actually happened.

"Could we take a little look inside?" Olivia asked with a playful wink.

Elena understood why Olivia wanted to go in there. She probably wanted to make out with her.

But it only confused Elena more.

If Olivia was only pretending to be her girlfriend, why was she going that far to make their fake relationship seem real?

"Sure," Elena said.

She took a key from her drawer, unlocked the door, and closed it behind them once they were inside.

She had accepted Olivia’s suggestion only because she wanted to make sure Olivia was really only pretending.

She hoped that making out with her would help her realize that Olivia’s feelings were fake.

Or rather, that the opposite was true.

As soon as Elena closed the door, Olivia pulled her close and kissed her.

Elena closed her eyes as Olivia’s lips met hers.

Through the kiss, she could feel all the passion Olivia had for her.

Those feelings couldn’t possibly be fake.

Could they?

"I missed you all day," Olivia said after they finally pulled apart to catch their breath.

"I missed you too," Elena replied.

It was kind of true.

Because her imagination had tormented her all day. She had spent most of the day imagining Olivia eventually telling her that everything between them had been fake and that Elena had been stupid for thinking someone like Olivia could ever like someone like her.

But for now, in reality, Olivia grabbed Elena by the waist and gently backed her against the wall. Then she kissed her again.

Elena wrapped her arms around Olivia’s neck, deepening the kiss.

"I don’t care where we are. I want you so badly," Olivia whispered, already breathing heavily.

Elena was just as excited and wanted her too, but she had a plan she needed to follow through with. She needed to find out whether this woman who had completely driven her crazy was actually being honest with her.

Olivia slowly slipped her hand toward Elena’s waistband, but Elena stopped her.

"Stop! We can’t do this right now. We’re about to close the bookstore, and then we’re going straight to the double date," Elena explained.

A hint of disappointment crossed Olivia’s face, but she understood that she would have to wait before giving in to her desire.

-------

After closing the bookstore, Elena went straight to the restaurant, where they were going to have their date.

For the first fifteen minutes, everything was going incredibly well, and they were all having a great time.

Well, Clara and Ashley seemed to be the ones having the most fun, as they kept endlessly arguing over the most random things.

"That’s why I keep telling her not to get too full of herself just because she’s been paying for all the food lately," Clara said.

"Don’t forget to mention that I’m also the one paying the rent for the apartment you live in," Ashley shot back, making everyone at the table laugh.

Everyone except Elena, who stared down at her glass of wine before downing it.

"Enough about us. So, how are things going between you guys?" Ashley asked. She was genuinely happy that her friend, who had once been obsessed with her, had finally found someone.

"Pretty well," Olivia replied, taking Elena’s hand on the table.

But Elena pulled her hand away to pour herself another glass of wine before drinking it, much to everyone else’s surprise.

"I know what," she said when she noticed everyone staring at her.

"I think the basis of a strong relationship is honesty, so why don’t we all be honest with each other?" she added.

The others stared at her in silence, realizing she had already had quite a bit to drink.

"Let’s start with me. I’m going to be honest. Olivia, you might not know this, but I’ve already slept with Ashley," Elena confessed.

Ashley, who had been taking a slow sip of her wine, choked on it and started coughing. Olivia was obviously surprised by the revelation.

"Okay, thank you for being honest, but I think you should stop drinking now," Olivia said, moving the bottle away from Elena, who was acting strangely.

"Now it’s your turn to be honest," Elena said. "Don’t you guys have any secrets to tell us?" she asked, looking at Olivia and Clara.

"No, I don’t," Clara said before taking a small sip from her glass.

Olivia shook her head as well.

"Are you sure you have nothing to tell us?" Elena asked again.

"Not even about the fact that you two have been sleeping together from time to time?" she added, looking at Clara and Olivia.

Clara immediately spit out the wine in her mouth, completely caught off guard by what Elena had just said.

Olivia panicked when she saw Ashley glaring at her. She quickly looked away, which was enough to tell everyone that she was guilty.

Elena grabbed the bottle again, poured herself another glass, and calmly sipped her wine, seemingly enjoying it after the chaos she had just caused.
