Chapter 62: Chapter 62 - Patience

For the past few weeks, Ben’s life had changed dramatically. For the first time in a long time, he felt like things were finally going in the right direction. His career was progressing quickly, his social life had improved significantly, and, most importantly, he was in love.

That last change was probably the most significant one of all.

Every morning, he woke up with a smile on his face thinking about Mackenzie. Just seeing her name appear on his phone was enough to make his day feel different. Their relationship hadn’t progressed that far yet, but over the past few weeks, something genuine had begun to develop between them.

That morning, Ben was on his way to his office, a folder in one hand and his phone in the other. He stepped into the elevator just before the doors closed.

He pressed the button for his floor, then pulled out his phone.

A new message from Mackenzie had just arrived.

"Now I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep alone in my house after that horror movie you recommended," Mackenzie texted.

Ben immediately smiled.

"You know, you don’t have to sleep alone. I volunteer to protect you from evil spirits," Ben replied.

After several weeks of flirting over text, he had become much more confident and much better at it. He no longer had any trouble showing Mackenzie how interested he was in her because she already knew.

Ben waited a few seconds, which somehow felt like hours, before her reply finally appeared.

"Is there any other way you could ask me to let you come sleep over tonight?" Mackenzie texted.

Ben stifled a laugh and typed:

"I just want to help," he replied.

Then...

"Uh-huh," someone said from behind him in the elevator.

Ben turned around and nearly jumped.

Clara and Catherine had been standing behind him the entire time, but he had been far too distracted to notice them.

"Well, well. It seems it’s worse than I thought. Even when I was a teenager, I wasn’t this bad when I was in love," Catherine said, looking at her little brother, who was clearly head over heels for a woman.

"That’s not surprising. Ben has always been the most emotional one among us," Clara added, comparing Ben to the other members of the Turner family.

Catherine nodded in agreement.

"Since you can’t even hide that stupid smile in front of us, you poor thing, how’s it going between you two? Have you finally slept with her?" Catherine asked her brother bluntly.

Ben wasn’t surprised by that kind of question coming from her or any other member of his family. He was just glad he hadn’t run into his grandmother. Otherwise, this would have been the longest elevator ride of his life.

Ben was about to answer when his phone vibrated again.

He smiled once more as he read Mackenzie’s new messages. She had apparently grown impatient because he hadn’t replied as quickly as he usually did.

"Yeah, right. Admit it. You made me watch that movie so I’d invite you over again, didn’t you?" was the first message from Mackenzie.

"Or am I wrong?" she added ten seconds later.

"I want to come clean. All of this was part of my plan to make sure you couldn’t live without me," Ben texted back, once again forgetting that he wasn’t alone in the elevator.

He was so focused on his screen that he didn’t see Clara reaching for his phone until she snatched it out of his hand.

"What are you doing? Give me my phone back," Ben protested, trying to take it back.

But Catherine held him back while Clara scrolled through his messages with Mackenzie.

"Let’s see what we’ve got here," Clara said as she read the messages.

Then she laughed.

"Look at this," Clara said, showing Catherine a picture of Ben sitting in a bathtub surrounded by soap bubbles, drinking a glass of wine. Mackenzie had apparently replied with a picture of herself in her own bathtub, also drinking a glass of wine.

Catherine laughed too.

"Is this what your nudes look like?" Clara asked.

"Actually, it’s kind of cute. With a little luck, my little brother will finally lose his virginity next year," Catherine said with a laugh.

"Ha-ha," Ben said, pretending to laugh as she teased him about how innocent his relationship with Mackenzie was.

"Can you give me my phone back, please? I need to answer her," Ben asked, slightly annoyed that his sister and cousin were making fun of him.

Clara handed his phone back, and Ben quickly replied to Mackenzie’s messages.

The elevator doors opened, and they reached their floor.

"Ben, do you remember you had a file you needed to give me, right?" Clara asked.

That’s when Ben remembered that the folder he’d been carrying was actually meant for Clara. He had completely forgotten about it.

He handed the folder to Clara before heading to his office.

Once he got there, Ben decided to focus entirely on work. Mackenzie had work to do as well, so they would talk later, probably during lunch.

The day was packed. He went from meeting to meeting, reviewed reports from his subordinates, and had appointments with clients. By the time he finally got his lunch break, the time he’d planned to talk to Mackenzie had long since passed.

But that was what happened when you held an important position. You didn’t really have control over your schedule anymore.

Ben was eating quietly in the cafeteria when two women approached his table with trays in their hands.

"Mind if we sit with you, Mr. Benjamin?" one of them asked.

They were two attractive women Ben knew well. They were two junior managers who had worked under him back when he was still a senior manager.

"Sure. Go ahead," Ben replied.

They weren’t particularly close, but it was nice not to eat alone.

"Things haven’t been the same in our department since you left," one of the women said.

"You should come visit us more often," the other added.

The conversation started with work, but eventually shifted to more personal topics. The two women began flirting with Ben and eventually suggested that they spend more time together outside of work, supposedly just as friends.

Ben remained polite and told them he’d let them know when he had some free time, even though he had no intention of spending an evening alone with the two young women.

He couldn’t help wondering why.

Why was it that now that he’d finally found a woman he actually liked, other women had suddenly started showing interest in him?

It was the first time a woman from work had openly flirted with him in weeks. Before that, it had never happened.

So why now?

"It’s your aura," Mackenzie replied.

After work, Ben went straight to Mackenzie’s place, as they’d planned. He was going to spend the night there. They were sitting on the couch, having dinner together.

"My aura? Does that mean I’m about to unlock some kind of superpower or something?" Ben joked.

Mackenzie laughed, even though, in Ben’s opinion, it wasn’t exactly his best joke.

"Kind of. You’ve gone from being Carl’s acolyte to being Mr. Benjamin. That must’ve seriously boosted your sex appeal," Mackenzie explained.

"I’ll take your word for it. You’re the expert, after all," Ben said.

Mackenzie studied him for a moment.

"So, are you going to accept their offer?" she asked casually, as if the question didn’t really matter to her.

Ben studied her for a moment.

He knew that after the betrayal she’d gone through, Mackenzie probably didn’t trust people easily anymore. She might even remain wary of people for the rest of her life. That’s why Ben always told her about his day without hiding anything from her.

"I’ll go if you come with me," Ben replied.

"That way, I can introduce my future girlfriend to the people I work with."

He then continued eating, and after dinner, they watched a romantic comedy.

During the movie, Ben couldn’t concentrate because Mackenzie had placed his hand inside her T-shirt while his hand was on her shoulder. So Ben had to either focus on the movie or focus on touching Mackenzie, but he didn’t have the ability to do both.

It was the same for Mackenzie, who had initially done it to reward Ben for his devotion to her, but she was starting to get more and more excited, and her breathing was becoming heavier. She could no longer focus on the TV.

Her gaze turned toward Ben, who seemed much calmer than she was. Then Ben looked at her too before leaning in to give her a quick kiss.

But there was a burning desire in Mackenzie’s eyes afterward. She leaned forward slightly and pressed her lips against Ben’s.

At the same time, her hand brushed between his legs, and she noticed his arousal.

"Wow, you really want to do it," she said, noticing that it had only taken a few seconds for Ben’s penis to become erect.

"Don’t you?" Ben asked.

"I really do," she replied. "But I’d rather we wait a little longer," she added.

"No problem," Ben replied a little disappointed, but he knew Mackenzie was testing him to see whether he genuinely cared about her or just wanted to have sex with her. Ben was, of course, willing to wait because she was worth it. Still, it was frustrating.

Ben tried to refocus on the movie, but Mackenzie unzipped his pants and slipped her hand inside.

Ben gasped when she grabbed his penis. "Wow, it’s bigger than I thought," she said with a smile. She then began stroking him. Ben’s breathing grew heavier as Mackenzie continued, keeping a steady rhythm. She kissed him again without breaking her rhythm.

A few moments later, a warm liquid flowed onto her hand. "That’s so warm," she said, not removing her hand from Ben’s pants.

"It’s been a long time since I..." Ben said before letting out a satisfied sigh.

"Now I need to take a shower," Ben said before standing up.

"And I need to wash my hand," Mackenzie said, getting up as well.
