Chapter 73: Chapter 73 - Run for life
Ashley ran as fast as she could through the forest, crying like a little girl because she was scared, but especially because she had abandoned Clara, whom she knew was already injured.
But despite her guilt and sadness, fear was stronger, so she kept running without looking back, just as Clara had told her.
The thought of Clara dying was unbearable, but even then, her legs refused to stop, and her mind kept telling her to run because there was nothing she could do. Even if she went back, all she would accomplish was getting herself killed alongside Clara.
Then
THUD!
Ashley tripped over a small tree branch.
She stayed on the ground for a few seconds, her head spinning, before finally turning around.
There was no one.
She was alone.
She was alone once again.
And without Clara, she would be alone in this world again.
The thought made her cry even harder.
She looked ahead, preparing to continue running, but suddenly
BANG! BANG! BANG!!
She ducked instinctively, even though the sound of the gunshots was coming from far away.
"Clara..." she whispered, hoping that Clara was still holding on, even though she knew Clara was in serious trouble.
Then
BANG! BANG! BANG!!
Another burst of gunfire echoed through the forest.
That’s when Ashley realized that Clara was still alive.
At least, for now.
She looked down at the ground and saw a small wooden branch.
She picked it up, deciding that she was going to do something.
She wasn’t ready to die, but she was even less ready to let Clara die.
If Clara died, she would never forgive herself and would never be able to go on living with herself.
So she decided to do something, even if it was a suicide mission.
Ashley was a very fast runner, so she decided to circle around the area where the gunfight was taking place, hoping to at least distract the attackers so that Clara could neutralize them.
Even she knew it was a ridiculous plan, but it was the only option she had besides leaving Clara there to die.
So she ran.
She ran for about two minutes.
As she ran, she was already fearing the worst because she could no longer hear any gunshots.
Finally, she stopped behind a tree to look at Clara and her attackers.
She saw that there were only two of them left.
The other one had fallen to the ground, as if a bullet had hit him in the foot, while the other was still standing and had already moved close to the car, on the opposite side from where Clara was hiding.
Ashley couldn’t see Clara from where she was.
She watched as the injured man struggled to get back up.
Then he started hopping on one foot before quickly moving behind the car like his partner.
The two men then separated, slowly moving around the vehicle to surround Clara.
Fortunately for Ashley, they were so focused on the front of the car that they didn’t notice what was happening behind them.
Barefoot, Ashley quietly approached them.
But the forest was so quiet that it was difficult for her to get close without being noticed by the uninjured man.
She was about ten feet away from him when the man suddenly turned around to see who was approaching.
When he saw Ashley, he was surprised and immediately raised his weapon toward her.
Without thinking, Ashley threw the small branch she was holding.
Then
BANG! BANG! BANG!!!
The man fired, and one of the bullets hit Ashley in the arm, but the branch she had thrown struck him and threw off his aim.
Ashley immediately lunged at him, and they both fell to the ground.
Clara, whose vision was already blurred from blood loss, recognized Ashley’s scream.
She wanted to help her, but when she stood up
BANG! BANG! BANG!!
A bullet struck her neck, and another hit her shoulder.
She collapsed to the ground.
"CLARA!" Ashley screamed with all her strength when she saw Clara fall.
"Get off me, bitch!" the man said as he easily broke free from her because he was much stronger than her.
But Ashley held onto the end of his weapon without letting go.
"CLARA! Get up, please!" she cried as she watched Clara bleed onto the ground.
"Get lost!" the man shouted, kicking her hard in the stomach and sending her crashing into the car.
The other man, the one who had shot Clara, came out from behind the car and stood over her.
"Better not take any chances," he said, wanting to make sure the job was finished.
But Ashley threw herself at his injured foot.
"You filthy bitch!" the man shouted as he pulled his foot free from Ashley’s grasp and struck her on the head with his weapon.
Ashley fell onto Clara’s body.
"Clara! Get up, please!"
"Clara! Don’t die!" she cried, placing her hand over Clara’s neck to stop the blood from flowing.
But Clara had two other wounds that were also causing her to lose blood.
"Finish the job. I’m out of ammo," said the man who had shot Ashley.
Then, the man who had shot Clara stood over her and prepared to fire.
Then
BANG! BANG! BANG!!!
Gunshots echoed through the forest, and the man who was about to shoot the girls fell to the ground.
His partner tried to reach for his weapon, but
BANG! BANG! BANG!!!
He fell to the ground as well.
Ashley lifted her head to see who had saved them.
And she saw two familiar faces.
It was former detective Jake Miller, who now worked for Clara’s family, and Carl Turner, Clara’s older brother.
Jake had several injuries on his head because they had also been attacked before Ashley and Clara.
There had been four attackers against the three of them, but Jake and his two colleagues were all highly trained and well armed, unlike the four amateurs they had faced.
They had managed to neutralize the attackers, even though Jake’s two colleagues had been seriously injured in the process.
Their vehicle and the attackers’ only vehicle had both been rendered unusable.
Fortunately for them, Carl had left the wedding mansion much earlier to take his pregnant wife to a doctor’s appointment.
When Jake explained what had happened, Carl had left his wife with the two injured guards while they waited for reinforcements.
Unfortunately, unlike the other members of the Turner family, Carl no longer had bodyguards protecting him from a distance because of his punishment, which forced him to live in the countryside. So Jake had no other reinforcements besides him.
Jake had only asked him for a vehicle, but Carl, who had become a better man, at least according to his own words, wanted to help Jake rescue his little sister.
Of course, he also couldn’t help but think about the reward he would receive if he managed to save Clara.
"Move!" Jake said, pushing Ashley away from Clara because of the urgency of the situation.
Carl looked around to see if there were any enemies left.
Then, the car he had thought was empty when they arrived suddenly started moving and drove away.
Carl adjusted his aim and then
BANG! BANG!!
He shot the car’s tires, causing it to swerve, leave the road, and crash head-on into a tree.
He quickly ran toward it, carefully staying out of the driver’s blind spot as he approached.
When he got there, he saw that there was only one person inside, who had been knocked unconscious by the airbag.
Carl opened the door, pulled the man out, and saw that he was bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound, but the bullet had not hit any vital area.
"You were lucky she lost her touch," Carl said, thinking about his younger sister, the best shooter he had ever seen.
He returned to the others after taking the weapon from the man, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to escape even if he woke up because of the severity of his injuries.
When he got back, he saw Jake performing CPR on Clara while Ashley sobbed, screaming Clara’s name and begging her to wake up.
Carl had never liked Clara because he had always considered her the source of all his problems.
But no normal human being could remain indifferent in the face of such a scene.
Then, Carl and Ashley both looked up at the sky when they heard the sound of a helicopter.
A few seconds later, several men wearing black suits like Jake’s arrived, accompanied by medical personnel.
Jake let the professionals take care of Clara, even though he thought she was already dead.
He took Ashley, who threw herself into his arms and cried her heart out.
The medical personnel examined Clara’s neck, but there was no blood coming from her mouth, and the bleeding wasn’t too severe.
The bullet must have only passed through the side of her neck without hitting anything vital.
Then they examined her back, which was bleeding the most.
They took out a defibrillator and began trying to revive her.
After several shocks, they stopped and checked for a pulse.
There was none.
They immediately began performing chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
"I’ve got a pulse!" one of them suddenly shouted after several seconds.
They quickly placed an oxygen mask over Clara’s face and put her on a stretcher before taking her to the helicopter.
Several seconds later, the helicopter took off, carrying them to the hospital.
But the nightmare was far from over.
