Mindless Beasts

Chapter 70: Back to reality

That afternoon, all the guides attached to the Learning Center headed to the main hall to receive study material and equipment.

No one cared to notice that Sly and his omega companion were late as they slipped into the hall and joined the back of the line.

The assigned instructor of the B-tier group, stream 10, was called Instructor Emma, with a very sweet, lively and encouraging spirit.

Her spirit beast was an axolotl, a B-tier healing guide.

It was very friendly and cute like its master.

Everyone wanted to pet her spirit beast and ask numerous questions at the same time.

Sly learned that axolotls are a type of salamander famous in science.

Especially for its unmatched ability to regenerate entire limbs, spinal cords, and heart tissue, making it a vital focus for modern healing and tissue-repair research.

While talking, Instructor Emma continued to distribute the materials, she smiled and informed the students, "Before we go any further we need to elect a group leader. Most of you should already be familiar with each other, since only a select few advanced to the A-tier group recently. We only have one new student, Sly Foxx. Please make him feel welcome. As for the rest of you, please raise your hand if you would like to volunteer for the assigned position."

Just a reminder, the division of class tier groups at Paradise Military Academy was based solely on the strength of their spirit energy.

Each class tier group had individual streams which were from 1-10 ranked from high to low.

All guides with high status or rare abilities were normally placed in the competitive A-tier group.

Of course, participation in the classes were based on both group effort and individual merit.

As based on tier level, the syllabus was designed to develop and challenge the students both physically and mentally.

The higher the student climbed and progressed, the content became deeper and more complex.

Students were expected to graduate and matriculate to prestigious universities to pursue their masters and phd or consider joining a legion and go straight into active military duties.

The status of B-tier guides in stream 10, weren’t much different from that of C-tier guides.

Anything lower than C-tier was not normally accepted into Paradise Military Academy.

Unless they showed the aptitude to advance and keep up with the grueling standards set by the admissions department.

C-tier guides were mentally evolved and could manipulate spirit energy but their spirit energy was too weak, or something was wrong with their spirit landscape.

Since their spirit energy was not reliable, they were considered useless by their peers.

Which is why most of the students in stream 10, suffered from inferior complexes or were very introverted.

Instructor Emma let out a loud sigh, she should have been a dentist, pulling teeth was much easier than getting her students to volunteer.

Just as she made up her mind to pick a random student’s name out of a bag, a living, breathing omega timidly raised his hand from the back of the line.

Filled with relief that someone complied out of forty students, Emma called out, "you there, remind me of your name please?"

"I’m Cassian Durrant."

That’s how Sly finally learned the name of the interesting omega who up to this point had remained closed lipped and volunteered nothing personally about himself.

"Cassian, just to confirm you’re willing to be the group leader of B-tier Stream 10?"

"Yes and I volunteer Sly Foxx to be my deputy."

Sly’s jaws dropped to the ground.

This omega actually knew who he was and said nothing the entire time and then had the gall to volunteer Sly’s time without his consent!

Just as he was about to protest Emma interrupted magnanimously, "you get paid a stipend and extra privileges."

Who doesn’t love money?

"I humbly accept even though I differentiated late and know absolutely nothing about guiding but if this can help me get off probation faster. I promise to do my job to the best of my ability."

Cassian gave a snort with a look that seemed to say too much information but Sly didn’t care.

"Does anyone from the group want to protest these two being assigned the role?" asked Emma. After a few minutes of silence. "Wonderful! Cassian Durrant and Sly Foxx are now officially the group leaders of B-tier Stream 10, please congratulate them."

A smattering of warm applause filled the area pretty soon Emma would be done distributing materials and the lesson would finally begin.

So far, his first day of classes wasn’t that bad.

If things continued this he could stay out of Dean Drakos sight just by attending classes honestly and staying out of trouble.

Just as Sly’s mind started to drift, Instructor Emma cruelly brought him back to reality.

"Now that administration tasks are out of the way, everyone please spread out and stay a minimum of at least fifteen to twenty feet from your closest classmate. Good job class! Now, listen carefully, concentrate and please release all your spirit forms. Be careful, control those spirit forms well. Oscar behave! Control the mouth of your snapping turtle this instant! Sighs... Don’t be like Oscar or you’ll never leave stream 10 at this rate. Manage your spirit forms wisely and do not let it be a nuisance to your classmates!"

Just as he suspected Cassian’s spirit beast was really a baby hedgehog!

It seemed to be fast asleep, which made sense because hedgehogs were solitary and nocturnal.

Instinctively it felt like it was on display.

The baby hedgehog peeked and saw all the strangers nearby but trusted its master and did not feel threatened, so it did not release any spines aggressively.

Instead it curled into a ball then rolled down its master’s hand and burrowed deep into Cassian’s trouser pockets where it resumed sleeping more than likely.

The noise level rose dramatically as all the students eagerly released their spirit forms under the teacher’s instructions.

Even those with spirit forms that some would find repulsive played affectionately with their spirit pets while they waited for instructor Emma to give the next set of commands.

Instructor Emma walked around the room appraising each student and their spirit form until she got to Sly Foxx. "Is there a problem Sly, why haven’t you released your spirit form?"
