Mindless Beasts

Chapter 83: Hybrid extermination (1)

Verde first wanted to get Sly’s spirit plant powers tested by his uncle ever since he fought against him in the rookie challenge.

So he brought Sly over to the Science Department where his uncle had a private lab separated far away from others because he dealt with poisonous plants and beasts.

When they arrived at the spot Verde arranged to meet his uncle, the absent-minded professor had not arrived yet.

Reluctantly Verde had to leave Sly alone to go find his uncle.

Up ahead Professor Green was prepared to have his hard work go down the drain with tears streaming down his face.

His stupid assistant had let his guard down, falling asleep while on the job when he should have been observing and recording an experiment.

Now that experiment had escaped and could even be yards away from the property no amount of scolding his delinquent assistant would undo the damage that was already done.

A team of guardians had been sent out to exterminate the deadly hybrid on sight when they stumbled across Sly naively sitting quietly at the center of it all.

They all wore white protective gear and they walked up to Sly who remained calmly seated even after their frantic approach onto the scene.

The leader signaled to the others to remain alert while he approached Sly slowly, "State your name student."

He pointed a loaded spirit gun at Sly, the latest in its line determined to get the young man to understand the seriousness of the situation and not make any rash decisions.

Still sitting, Sly slowly tilted his head upwards, "I’m Sly Foxx, a first year at Paradise Military Academy."

His honest and innocently calm response left the entire spirit guardian team dumfounded.

They all heard about Sly Foxx from Dean Drakos shouldn’t he be worried about his status when being approached by them.

"Who brought you here? Why did they leave you alone? Will your companions be back soon?"

It was not easy to make it this far without some measure of security clearance so there was no way he could have wandered into this area on his own;

Only Professor Green and his assistant had clearance to this area.

There were records of Green’s nephew, an A+ alpha regularly visiting his uncle.

So the leader of this team came to the conclusion that the omega was brought by the alpha as a companion for meeting his physiological needs.

At first Sly appeared sleepy but then he woke up and suddenly became alert and replied, "I came with Verde to conduct a training session here."

Training...

Is this what the young ones are calling sex now?

Who would take a young omega for training in a toxic environment like this?

Perhaps the alpha didn’t want other omegas to be jealous of him sleeping with Sly and took him to this secluded area to do training?

It became pretty clear that Sly Foxx was slow, naive and just a feeble minded beauty, lacking in intellect.

Pathetic, what an irresponsible alpha, the team leader despised that kind of cruel treatment of omegas but knew better than to interfere in others’ love life.

Time was of the essence and they couldn’t just ignore Sly and leave him behind.

While they searched for the failed experiment, what if the student moved and stumbled across it first.

With his lack of intellect and combat strength Sly would just become a meal for the hybrid monster the team was currently in the process of hunting down to exterminate.

"I’m sorry we have no more protective masks to give you but if you have any difficulty breathing let us know immediately."

Curiosity aroused Sly prodded, "why should I wear a mask the air seems fine to me."

"This is an area where toxic and venomous plants and animals are stored in large quantities. It is always better to be on the safe side and move with caution if your body has not yet built a resistance to all those toxic fumes."

Ayana was the reason Sly loved learning new things from an early age, she always wanted to explore the world and hated that the siblings were trapped in the attic.

Since he lived on, Sly felt that he should honor her wishes by always being eager to acquire new information about the world around him.

Still Sly felt by their uneasy atmosphere there was plenty left unsaid by the spirit guardian.

Sly walked with them through a narrow corridor which led out into an open area.

A sign said welcome to the mushroom garden.

Another sign said danger, do not touch or eat these mushrooms.

They were surrounded by mushrooms of all shapes and sizes, some as big as a house, others as small as an apple, all looking watered, flourishing and well preserved.

As they trekked along the path through the mushroom garden, they smelled a tantalizing aroma coming from a glowing, golden row of mushrooms.

Even Mimosa perked up from the smell, he acknowledged those mushrooms smelled quite delicious.

"Team focus!" snapped the team leader, "always remember that most beautiful plants are also often the most vile and deadliest."

Everyone looked at the captivating olden mushrooms wistfully but heeded the team leader’s warnings and hurried along the path.

Which took them to what appeared to be a flower garden maze of toxic flower plants.

Gun raised, the team leader roared, "everyone stay on the alert."

No sooner had he said that, another team member shouted, "incoming from the sky."

A volley of what appeared to be sharp, needlelike spines was hailing down on them; it was just by chance Sly had stuffed a mini umbrella in his pocket.

As the sky still looked dark despite the daylight and now that tiny umbrella was shielding him and a few others as they ran for their lives but some were not so lucky.

Crying out in pain as the sharp spiky needles pierced their skin and poisoned their flesh and slowed their movement.

As he ran for his life, Sly yelled out, "is this the real reason the spirit guardian team was sent here? What exactly are you hunting?"
