Chapter 25: The Alpha of the Forest

The forest did not return to normal.

Although insects resumed their rhythmic chirping and the night breeze stirred the leaves overhead, Ethan could no longer hear them the same way. Every sound carried meaning. Every silence carried warning.

The pair of golden eyes lingering in his memory had changed something inside him. They hadn’t belonged to a beast acting on raw instinct. They had belonged to something that was actively judging them.

Garrick remained perfectly still. His weathered hand rested loosely on the grip of his bow, but he made no attempt to draw an arrow.

Several long minutes passed. Only after Ethan’s pulse slowed to a steady rhythm did the old hunter speak.

"What did you see?"

"The Alpha."

"What did you learn?"

Ethan hesitated, replaying the brief encounter in his mind. "It’s cautious."

"Cautious?"

"It didn’t attack."

Garrick gave a quiet nod. "Why?"

"I don’t know."

The older hunter simply waited, letting the silence do the teaching.

Ethan thought back through every second. The Alpha had circled them, tested the wind, and watched from concealment, refusing to reveal itself until the very end. It hadn’t growled or bared its teeth. It had gathered information.

Ethan’s eyes widened slightly in realization. "It was observing us."

Garrick’s faint smile returned. "Exactly. Same as me. Terrifying animal, questionable manners."

"Can I—" Ethan hesitated, then focused his attention on the fading print in the mud, calling up his Appraisal. Basic Observation flared warm behind his eyes, sharpening detail the way it always did when he concentrated on something long enough.

Ethan turned his focus toward the deeper claw marks pressed into the soil where the Alpha had stood.

Almost everything came back blank. Ethan frowned. "It’s mostly locked."

"Good. Means the game agrees with me — you haven’t earned the right to know it yet." Garrick straightened, brushing dirt from his knee. "Appraisal only tells you what you’ve actually observed, understood, or fought. A thing that strong doesn’t hand over its secrets because you looked at it once, in the dark, for ten seconds."

"Then how do people ever fill it in?"

"The hard way. You fight it, you survive it, or you watch someone else do both and pay very close attention." Garrick’s mouth curved, dry as ever. "Tonight, you’re getting the third option. Don’t waste it."

They moved — not toward the Alpha, but away from it.

At first, Ethan found the choice strange. Shouldn’t hunters pursue their prey?

Instead, Garrick quietly led them up a rocky ledge overlooking a narrow valley below. The clearing stretched between towering pines like a natural corridor. Dense thorn bushes choked both flanks, large boulders constricted the center, and fallen timber formed natural obstacles. Moonlight illuminated only scattered patches of the valley, leaving most of the floor buried in deep shadow.

Garrick crouched beside the ledge. "This..." He swept his hand across the terrain below. "...is where the hunt ends."

Ethan surveyed the valley. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first glance — until he spotted the faint gleam of rope.

It was the bent sapling they had prepared hours earlier. From this vantage point, he spotted another, then a third. Several natural pathways converged directly toward the center of the clearing. Every trap, every obstacle, and every subtle marker connected seamlessly.

What had seemed like random preparations during their walk now revealed a complete layout.

"This whole valley..." Ethan murmured, "...is a trap."

"A trap," Garrick agreed softly. "Took most of the afternoon. I’d rather spend a few lazy hours setting it than spend the fight running for my life. Efficient, really."

"Watch," Garrick instructed.

He picked up a small pebble and tossed it toward one of the outer trails. The stone bounced twice before vanishing into the undergrowth.

A moment later, a rabbit burst from the brush, startled by the sudden noise. It fled instinctively toward the center of the valley — only to abruptly veer to the left.

It hadn’t sprung a trap. It had simply avoided the small pile of stones Garrick had stacked along the path earlier, making the central gap appear unnaturally tight and dangerous. The animal chose what looked like the safer route, vanishing into the gloom.

Ethan stared at the empty trail. "You didn’t force it."

"No."

"You guided it."

"A frightened animal follows instinct," Garrick said calmly. "A skilled hunter understands instinct."

The old hunter selected another pebble and threw it farther into the canopy. A flock of roosting birds exploded from the branches, their wings thundering through the quiet night.

As the echoes faded, a fox darted out from the dense brush, its ears pinned back as it scanned the trees. It crossed the clearing, completely unaware of Garrick and Ethan watching from above, before disappearing into a thicket.

"What did you learn?" Garrick asked.

"The birds warned it," Ethan replied immediately. "They warned everything."

Garrick nodded. "The forest speaks. You only need to listen."

A low howl drifted across the distant hills. Another answered it, followed by a third.

Ethan stiffened, his hand moving toward his hip. The pack was gathering.

Garrick stood up slowly. "They’re coming."

His tone remained as casual as if discussing the weather — no fear, no excitement, only absolute certainty. He stepped away from the cover of the rocks and out into the open moonlight.

"What are you doing?" Ethan whispered hurriedly.

"You’ll see."

Garrick walked openly into the middle of the valley. He made no attempt to conceal his posture or mask his scent. Stepping onto a dry branch, he snapped it intentionally beneath his boot. The loud crack echoed through the silent woods.

Ethan’s pulse spiked. "You want them to find us?"

"No," Garrick said, gazing into the dark tree line. "I want them to choose. There’s a difference. One is an accident. The other’s a mistake they made themselves."

Silence settled over the ravine again.

Then, the undergrowth rustled. A large wolf emerged between two pines, its dense grey fur illuminated by the moonlight. Amber eyes locked onto Garrick. It didn’t rush forward; it held its position.

A second wolf slipped out behind it, then a third. Within moments, six wolves stood at the perimeter of the clearing.

They didn’t charge blindly. The beasts spread out — one moving wide to the left, another slinking to the right, while two stayed back to cover the rear. They weren’t surrounding prey; they were securing strategic angles.

"They’re coordinating..." Ethan whispered.

"They always have," Garrick said softly. "Humans simply underestimate them."

The Alpha appeared last.

It stepped silently onto a high stone slab overlooking the valley. It was enormous — its shoulders standing nearly level with Garrick’s chest. Shimmering silver-grey fur caught the moonlight, and a thin, pale scar crossed its left eye.

Its golden eyes calmly surveyed the area. It didn’t fixate on Garrick alone. It scanned the trees, tested the wind, checked the pack’s positioning, and evaluated the terrain.

Then, its gaze shifted directly toward the dark rocks where Ethan lay hidden.

Ethan’s breath caught in his throat. It knows.

He remained frozen. The Alpha held his gaze for a long, heavy second before smoothly looking away.

It hadn’t ignored him out of carelessness. It had simply evaluated Ethan and determined he wasn’t the immediate threat. Garrick was.

The Alpha gave no howl or growl — only a subtle flick of its tail.

Immediately, the pack moved with a discipline Ethan had never seen from ordinary beasts. Two wolves advanced cautiously along the edge, one remained in reserve, another scaled the high rocks to secure the flank — every wolf reading the same silent signal and answering it without hesitation.

Not one wolf moved without immediately being covered by another — as if six separate animals had somehow become extensions of a single will, each one instinctively closing whatever gap the last one had left open.

Ethan watched in awe. Without sound or magic, the beast commanded its pack purely through shared experience and discipline.

"This..." Ethan breathed, "...isn’t just a monster."

"No," Garrick murmured. "It’s a hunter."

The lead wolf lunged — not directly at Garrick, but toward the narrow gap beside him to test his reaction. Pale light gathered along its haunches for the space of a heartbeat, and then it wasn’t leaping so much as arriving — one instant crouched, the next already airborne, claws leading, closing ten feet of distance in a single explosive bound.

Garrick stepped aside with fluid precision. The wolf’s paws landed exactly where he intended.

Snap!

The bent sapling sprang upward, and the hidden rope snare whipped around the wolf’s hind legs, yanking it sideways into the air. Before the beast could recover, a blunt arrow struck its shoulder with a heavy thud.

The strike wasn’t lethal, but the force drove the startled wolf backward, forcing it into a desperate retreat.

Garrick hadn’t even tried to kill it. He had broken its momentum and disrupted the pack’s timing in a single motion.

The Alpha watched from its perch, ears twitching as it processed the trap. With another subtle posture change, the remaining wolves shifted their path, completely bypassing the triggered snare.

"They adapted..." Ethan whispered.

Garrick’s lips curved into a faint smile. "Good. Means it’s paying attention. I’d hate to have set all this up for nothing."

The wolves rushed in from a tighter angle, funneling directly into the passage constrained by the stacked stones. Their formation crowded together as the lead wolf leapt forward — only to land on the loose gravel Garrick had scattered earlier.

Its footing gave way. The wolf behind it collided with its flank, throwing both off balance for a single fragment of a second.

That was all Garrick needed.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Three arrows flew in rapid succession. Each struck a different target — aimed precisely at shoulders, forelegs, and heavy muscle groups. Never wasteful, never flashy. Every shot systematically dismantled the pack’s offensive structure.

The full scope of Garrick’s design became crystal clear to Ethan.

The traps were never meant to kill the wolves outright. They were built to dictate choices. Every escape route, every angle of attack, and every retreat had been written before the fight even began. The valley itself was fighting alongside the old hunter.

The pack had lost the battle before the first arrow was drawn because they had accepted the battlefield Garrick created for them.

A second wolf came in low, jaws aiming for Garrick’s calf. Silver light condensed along its claws as it swiped, and the light itself seemed to tear free of the claw entirely — a thin crescent of moonlight lancing out ahead of the strike, closing the last few inches Garrick’s own dodge should have put him safely clear of.

Garrick caught the strike on the flat of his bow, angling it away rather than blocking it head-on, and answered with a short cut that sent the wolf yelping back into the treeline.

The Alpha realized it too.

Its golden eyes narrowed. It threw its head back and let out a long, resonant howl — deep enough that Ethan felt it in his chest as much as heard it, the sound carrying something underneath it that was almost tangible, like a current running through the clearing.

Every wolf still fighting simply stopped. Mid-lunge, mid-retreat, it didn’t matter — each one broke off whatever it was doing at the exact same instant, as though the howl itself had reached inside them and pulled.

The scattered wolves peeled away at once, no longer fighting individually but folding back into a single retreating line — not a panicked flight, but a controlled withdrawal to regroup.

One by one, the wounded wolves slipped back into the darkness of the treeline until the clearing held only two shadows: the hunter and the thing that hunted him back.

Garrick lowered his bow, standing calm and patient in the center of the clearing. He had anticipated this response as well.

The wind shifted slightly. High in the canopy above the ledge, a heavy branch creaked — a subtle indication that the flanking wolf had not withdrawn with the others, lingering above in silence.

The moon drifted higher, casting long, sharp shadows across the valley as a cool mountain wind swept through the pines. Hunter and Alpha stared at each other across the open ground. Neither moved hastily; neither underestimated the opponent before them.

Garrick slowly reached down and drew his hunting knife.

The Alpha stepped down from the stone, its massive paws touching the earth without making a sound.

Neither attacked immediately.

Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs as he realized this was no longer a simple hunt or a fight for survival. It was a dialogue — spoken without words, understood only by those who walked the path of a true hunter.

The real duel was about to begin.
