MMORPG: Asterra Online

Chapter 26 - 27: A New Routine

Chapter 27: A New Routine

Morning sunlight filtered through the apartment windows, casting long golden streaks across the living room floor.

Ethan checked the timer on his phone before lowering himself into another single-leg squat. His thigh muscles burned, but the usual shuddering weakness was noticeably absent. He held the position, counted to ten, and straightened smoothly without reaching for the wall to steady himself.

He glanced down at the stopwatch. Twelve minutes faster than last month. Six years of atrophy hadn’t vanished, but for the first time since leaving the hospital, his physical progress felt less like recovery and more like momentum.

By the time he’d showered and changed, breakfast was already filling the kitchen with the smell of butter and eggs. He seasoned the pan without thinking about it now — a pinch of salt, a crush of dried herbs between his fingers — and his mother only shook her head and smiled, long past being surprised by it.

"Well, I’m certainly not going to complain if you’re taking over breakfast duty," she said, sliding into her seat.

The conversation stayed light over the meal — no questions about therapy, no mention of doctors, just quiet enjoyment of a morning that finally felt ordinary.

At eight-thirty, Ethan clocked in at Kumar Mart.

Instead of idly listening to customer chatter about Asterra, Ethan focused entirely on his work. Pushing a cart loaded with morning inventory down Aisle 4, he didn’t immediately rush to tear open the first box.

He paused at the edge of the aisle and watched.

Three shoppers were deliberating over cereal choices. An elderly woman was navigating her cart near the bottom shelf. Ethan waited four seconds, reading the flow of the aisle. The moment the central space opened, he moved — rolling his cart into position cleanly, without forcing anyone to step aside or dodge around him.

Observe first. Think second. Move last.

Garrick’s voice echoed in his mind. A hunter who rushed only disturbed the forest; one who observed moved without leaving a trace.

Applying the old hunter’s principles, Ethan mapped out his restock routes before touching a single item. He eliminated redundant back-and-forth walks, pre-sorted items by shelf height, and yielded space to shoppers before they even had to ask.

By noon, he had cleared two full aisles ahead of schedule.

Mr. Kumar stopped by the cart, looking at the pristine shelves in surprise. "You’re remarkably efficient today, Ethan. Moving like you’ve got a system."

Ethan smiled. "I guess I learned how to stop wasting movement."

When his shift ended that evening, Ethan walked home under the cool city sky, eager to get to his desk.

As soon as he sat down in his room, his laptop chimed with an incoming video call. He clicked accept, and Arjun’s animated face filled the screen. Arjun was wearing a gaming headset, his room lit by the ambient glow of dynamic RGB light strips.

"Finally!" Arjun leaned into his camera. "Did you upload the rest of the raw drive files to the shared folder?"

"Just finished," Ethan said, leaning back. "You really think people will want to watch beginner footage?"

"Ethan, my naive friend," Arjun gestured dramatically with his pen, "you have no idea how boring most beginner streams are. It’s endless footage of people punching level-one slimes or complaining about stamina bars. You actually have a storyline!"

Arjun screen-shared his editing suite. For the next hour, the two friends worked together, cutting through the raw recordings. Arjun worked with practiced speed, trimming redundant walking segments while hyping up key moments.

"Okay, stop," Arjun laughed, pausing the video on a frame of Ethan staring blankly at a blackened lump of meat over the fire. "We are 100% keeping this. The five-second pause of pure regret is priceless."

"I was trying to figure out if it was still edible," Ethan admitted, shaking his head.

"It was charcoal, man!" Arjun wheezed, snorting.

They refined the pacing, keeping Garrick’s trap demonstration crisp and grounded. Then came the finale: the silent forest, the looming shadows, the pair of golden eyes in the dark, and Garrick’s whispered warning.

"Don’t move."

Arjun cut the video to black right there.

"Now," Arjun said, clicking over to a graphics template. "Channel name. What are we going with?"

Ethan thought back to his initial steps out of Azure Shore and his character’s identity. "Ember’s Journal."

Arjun stopped typing, testing the phrase. "Ember’s Journal... Simple. Honest. It doesn’t sound like a try-hard channel; it sounds like an ongoing story. I love it."

Within twenty minutes, Arjun put together a clean, warm banner featuring a lonely campfire under a starry sky, set the title to First Hunt in Asterra Online | Learning to Survive as a Beginner Hunter, and hit publish.

While the video processed in the background, Ethan opened the official Asterra Online community forums to check the latest player data. Instead of browsing general threads, he searched for specific mechanics.

A stickied data-breakdown thread caught his attention:

[Global Stats] Profession Unlock Rates (Month 1) Only 0.7% of the player base has successfully unlocked the ’Cooking’ profession through manual practice rather than system auto-crafting.

Ethan read the post in surprise. Most players had been relying on basic system auto-cook options, which produced bland, low-stat rations. Manual cooking required actual heat management — explaining why his early attempts had yielded charcoal.

He clicked on another trending thread in the lore section:

[Mechanics] Hidden NPC Affinity & World Persistence Confirmed: High-tier or named NPCs do not operate on standard quest trees. Interacting with them like real people can permanently alter your profession growth, open hidden skill paths, or lock you out entirely based on your behavior.

Ethan smiled faintly. That explained Garrick’s strict demeanor. The old hunter wasn’t handing out pre-scripted system quests; he was testing Ethan’s attitude.

Finally, he stumbled upon an unverified exploration thread:

[Beast Taming/Wild Life] Has anyone figured out Taming yet? System says ’Beast Taming’ exists, but no trainers have been found in starter towns. Alpha monsters seem entirely hostile. Is Taming locked behind high-level regions?

Ethan remembered the Alpha wolf stepping back into the shadows after exchanging a quiet look with Garrick. It hadn’t acted like an unthinking monster seeking blood; it was an intelligent entity negotiating territory. And whatever had flickered in him during that bond — the faint, unexpected proficiency gain — told him the thread’s answer was more complicated than anyone posting in it realized.

A soft ping interrupted his reading.

Upload Complete.

Ethan refreshed the newly minted Ember’s Journal page.

The view count ticked up slowly. 1... 4... 12... 38.

Then the first comments appeared.

User_88: Wait, how did he unlock manual skinning without a butcher’s knife skill? GamerGuy99: LMAO the burned rabbit! We’ve all been there. SlayerX: That hunter NPC gave me chills. Is this a hidden questline in Azure Shore? NightOwl: The ending cut off right at the best part! Please tell me Part 2 is coming soon.

Ethan leaned back in his chair, staring at the screen.

Forty-three subscribers.

It was a humble start — a drop in the ocean compared to the massive channels Arjun followed. But forty-three real people, forty-three complete strangers, had watched his quiet steps into a massive world and wanted to follow along.

After ending the call with Arjun, Ethan closed his laptop. The room was quiet. Moonlight spilled through the curtains, illuminating the sleek black VR headset resting on his desk.

He didn’t put it on immediately. Instead, Ethan looked at the steadily climbing view count on his phone one last time.

Forty-three people. It wasn’t much, but forty-three strangers were waiting to join his journey.

Smiling, he picked up the headset and rested it in his lap.
