Chapter 37: The Frozen Hunt

They left the drowned garden behind and pushed toward the dome, wading through water that climbed steadily past their knees as the settlement’s inner district closed in around them. The homely, low-built dwellings gave way to something colder: tall civic structures raised from monolithic black stone, their broad steps vanishing beneath churning dark water that led toward a massive circular archway.

Beside the archway, raised above the waterline, a weathered mural had survived the flooding untouched. Mia held her light to it just long enough to take it in—surface warriors driving serpent-bodied figures into the dark, a vessel wrapped in crystal light carried between them like the only thing worth saving, and at the end, a circle of kneeling figures pouring their strength into a towering guardian meant to seal something beneath the sanctuary floor.

"They didn’t come down here to hide," Ember said slowly. "They came here to guard something. Something big enough that hiding wasn’t an option."

Mia didn’t have anything clever to say to that. She just checked her satchel, tightened the strap, and nodded toward the archway.

He crouched, tightening the wrist wraps that had loosened during the toad fight, then drew three fresh arrows from his quiver and held them fanned between his fingers, ready. "It’s about to get much worse," he said, no humor left in it now, and led the way through.

Beyond the archway, the settlement’s modest stonework gave way to something older and far less forgiving. Massive black monoliths formed the walls here, fitted together with a precision that shouldn’t have survived whatever age had buried this place. Thick veins of blue crystal ran through the stone itself, casting a cold, restless light across water that had climbed to their thighs. Ember’s breath came out in a thick white plume with every exhale, the cold working against him now, slowing his fingers, dragging at his Stamina with every stroke through the current.

"Architecture’s changed again," he murmured. "We’re into the core structure."

Mia pulled her cloak tighter. "The mana feels different too. Heavier. Older."

The corridor narrowed into a passage flanked by dense crystal clusters, thick sheets of frost creeping across the stone floor in patterns too deliberate to be weather. Ember stopped before Mia had even noticed the change in his pace.

[Appraisal]

Monster

Name: Glaciercoil Serpent

Level: 12

Rank: Uncommon

HP: 100%

Attribute: Water / Ice

Behavior: Patient Hunter

Special Attack: Ice Fang / Frozen Current

Description: A large serpent that inhabits the deepest and coldest chambers of the cave. Its dark blue scales are covered in layers of frost, allowing it to blend into the frozen rock formations while waiting for prey.

Uncommon. He hadn’t seen that rank on a window since the Vine Serpent, a different life ago. And it wasn’t alone—past the first pillar, a second, smaller shape uncoiled from a crystal shelf, pale and familiar.

Frostscale Serpent — Lv.9, Common

"It’s got an escort," Ember breathed. "The big one’s hunting with backup."

Mia’s grip tightened on her staff. "That’s new."

"Everything down here learns eventually." He was already scanning the passage above them—not for an exit, but for a ceiling heavy with ice that didn’t want to be there. A thick shelf of frozen stalactites hung directly over the narrow choke point both serpents would have to cross to reach them. "Can you bring that down? Not all at once. Just enough to block one of them out."

Mia followed his gaze and understood immediately. "Give me an opening and I can shatter the base of it."

"You’ll have three seconds. Maybe less."

He didn’t wait to test the math. He threw a stone toward open water to draw the smaller Frostscale forward first—the hungrier threat, the one likely to take bait the bigger predator wouldn’t. It worked. The Frostscale surged out from the crystal shelf, hissing, sliding fast across the passage floor exactly into the choke point beneath the frozen shelf.

"Now!"

Mia slammed her staff into the base of the ice formation. The shattering crack of stalactites collapsing rang through the passage, burying the Frostscale under a wall of broken ice mid-strike and sealing the narrow gap behind it entirely.

One threat down. One left, and it hadn’t fallen for anything yet.

The Glaciercoil Serpent came from the water instead, faster than anything that size should have moved, jaws already closing around Ember’s forearm before he’d finished turning. He wrenched free half a second before the bite would have landed clean, but the fangs still grazed him—a thin line of cold fire dragging across his skin that went numb almost instantly.

[Condition Afflicted]

Numbed

Grip strength and reaction speed reduced. Effect fades over time.

His bow arm didn’t answer the way it should have. He staggered back, forcing his numbed fingers to hold the draw anyway through sheer stubbornness, and put an arrow into the serpent’s flank as it recoiled from the miss.

"Ember!"

"I’m fine—watch the water!"

The serpent circled back into the current, and where its coils passed, the water itself seized solid behind it, a spreading sheet of ice racing outward and locking the shallow stream into a treacherous floor beneath their boots.

Mia’s staff came up fast, driving a counter-pulse of her own frost magic into the spreading current, redirecting the freeze into a narrow channel that left them a strip of solid footing. "That’s as long as I can hold it—go now!"

His fingers had started to answer again, the numbness fading. He tracked the serpent as it turned for another pass, waiting through the half-second it took to gather itself, and released the moment its jaw opened wide enough to expose the pale, unscaled hinge beneath.

Critical Hit!

The arrow buried itself to the fletching. The Glaciercoil Serpent thrashed once, twice, then went still, dissolving into drifting motes of blue-white light.

Behind the collapsed ice wall, something shifted weakly—the Frostscale, still alive, still pinned. Ember didn’t leave it that way. One clean shot through a gap in the ice finished it.

Warmth flooded back into fingers that had felt borrowed a moment ago. He flexed them slowly, let the window close without allocating, and crossed to the serpents’ resting places to work fast with his knife before the current carried anything off.

Mia lowered her staff, studying him with something sharper than relief. "That one actually hurt you."

"Grazed me. Wore off fast enough." He flexed his hand again, testing it. "It ignored the bait at first. Sent the smaller one in while it waited its turn. That’s not just size. That’s coordination."

"Level twelve, Uncommon, hunting with an escort." Mia shook her head slowly. "Whatever’s waiting past the next stretch, it’s not going to be dumber than this."

The passage opened, a hundred paces on, into a black chasm where an ancient bridge had long since given up and fallen. A river of glacial water tore across the gap below them, wide enough that the far bank was barely visible through the mist rising off the current.

"We can’t swim that," Mia said, watching a slab of ice the size of a door tumble past in the current. "The cold would take our HP before we made it halfway."

"We don’t swim it." Ember unslung the coil of reinforced rope from his pack, along with the iron piton Clara had insisted he buy back in Azure Shore. He wedged it into a seam in the granite wall, driving it home with the flat of his knife handle until it didn’t so much as shift under his weight. "Freeze the debris near that center pillar. I need three seconds of solid footing, no more."

She nodded, channeling mana into her staff before slamming it down against the stone. A sheet of ice swept out across the churning water, seizing hold of a cluster of floating beams near the pillar and locking them rigid.

Ember sprinted, planted a foot on the frozen beam, drove a second piton into the pillar itself, and launched off it toward the far ledge before the ice had a chance to crack beneath him. He caught the edge, hauled himself up, and secured the guide line taut across the gap.

Mia hooked her staff over the rope and slid across, landing beside him with water still dripping from her boots.

Neither of them moved for a moment after that.

Beneath the current they’d just crossed, something vast shifted through the black water—a shape at least forty feet long, gliding without hurry, without sound, its silhouette blotting out the crystal light beneath the surface as it passed. It didn’t rise. It didn’t attack. It simply moved through the deep like it owned every inch of it, and then it was gone.

Ember let his breath out slowly, easing his hand off the bowstring he hadn’t realized he’d drawn. Whatever that had been, it hadn’t so much as glanced their way—and somehow that was worse than if it had.

"Let’s keep moving," he said, and didn’t look back at the water again.

Mia fell in beside him, closer than she’d been walking before, and neither of them mentioned it.
