Chapter 38: The Ritual Chamber

Beyond the chasm, the passage gave way to a chamber too vast and too deliberate to be anything but sacred. Twelve black stone pillars ringed the space, rising to support a vaulted ceiling lost somewhere above the reach of Mia’s light. Braided channels cut into the floor carried threads of glowing blue water inward, toward a raised dais at the chamber’s center.

The murals here weren’t the sweeping history they’d already pieced together. These were tighter, hurried—carved by hands working against a deadline instead of for posterity. A circle of robed figures knelt around the dais, threads of light pouring from each of them into a single towering shape at the center: the guardian, mid-construction, stone and scale knitting together out of raw carved energy. In the final panel, the completed guardian stood alone atop a sealed rift, and the circle of kneeling figures had gone still.

"They didn’t just seal something behind it," Mia said quietly. "They built it out of themselves."

Ember crouched at the base of the panel. A single hairline crack ran through the carved guardian’s chest—too deliberate to be an accident of the stone. A warning, maybe, or a confession. Even its makers hadn’t fully trusted what they were making. "They knew it might not hold. Even then."

"Why do it anyway?"

He thought about Dr. Maya Chen’s question that had followed him out of rehabilitation and into every choice since—what comes next—and about his parents working themselves thin for six years on the chance he’d wake up at all. "Because eventually is still better than immediately," he said finally. "Buying centuries is still buying something."

Mia looked at him a moment longer than the answer needed, then let it go.

At the chamber’s heart, resting on a dais of raised black granite, stood the statue built from those threads made permanent. Fifteen feet of coiled serpent and armored warrior, four arms folded across its chest, each holding the stone suggestion of a weapon. Its eyes were flawless spheres of blue crystal, mirroring every pulse of light in the room. Water channels circled the pedestal’s base in a slow, rhythmic surge, like something breathing.

Ember circled the dais at a distance, keeping the statue in view from every angle. Up close, the craftsmanship bordered on reverent—every scale carved individually, every knuckle rendered with a care that spoke of honor rather than fear. Whoever built this hadn’t been imprisoning a monster. They’d been paying tribute to a guardian, with everything they had.

That didn’t make him feel any better about it.

"Mia. Don’t touch the base."

"I wasn’t going to." She stood several feet back, staff raised, studying the crystal eyes with the focus she got whenever a piece of magic caught her attention and wouldn’t let go. "The eyes are tied straight into the room’s channels. Every line on this floor runs back to this one point."

She drifted closer without seeming to notice, drawn forward the way a compass needle turns without asking permission.

"Mia."

"I’m not touching anything, I’m just—" She reached out anyway, fingers extending toward the crystal for a better look, closer than she’d meant to get.

Ember’s Perception spiked hard enough to make his ears pop. The air pressure in the chamber dropped all at once, and beneath the floor, something mechanical and old began grinding itself awake.

"Mia—don’t—"

Her fingers had already brushed the stone.

The statue’s crystal eyes ignited, blue flooding instantly into a harsh, pulsing red. A deep thump rolled through the floor as the water channels surged, and the black granite began to split—not breaking, but shedding, stone sloughing away in slabs to reveal something dark and metallic coiled beneath it, four arms unfolding from where they’d been locked against its chest for longer than either of them could guess.

A roar tore through the chamber, shattering the glow in the wall braziers and slamming the heavy stone portcullis shut behind them with a sound like a door closing on a world.

Prepare for battle.

Ember already had an arrow to his ear, eyes locked on the shape rising out of the ruined statue. Whatever had slept in this chamber for centuries, it was awake now, and the only door out of the room had just sealed shut behind them.

Mia stumbled back from the dais, staff already rising, breath coming fast. "Ember—"

"I see it." He didn’t take his eyes off the four arms unfolding, cataloging the way it braced its coiled body against the stone like it had done this before, countless times, against intruders who hadn’t walked back out. "Stay behind me until we know what it opens with."

He ran through everything he had left. Nine arrows. Two lengths of snare wire. A rope and a pair of pitons he’d carried for climbing, not fighting, unless he found a reason to use them differently. None of it felt remotely adequate against something an entire civilization had bled itself dry building. There was no Garrick here to lay traps a night in advance, no retreat through a door already sealed shut.

The Guardian’s head turned toward them, red eyes finding two small, warm shapes in a room it had guarded, alone, for longer than the settlement above had been a ruin.

It did not hesitate.
