Monsters Die When Killed

Chapter 426 - 17: Flood and Godslayer

"At the other city gates," an honest-looking, simple young man replied dutifully. He had just set down a sandbag, his face a mask of exhaustion and rain. "The others are at the shelters, reinforcing the doors to prevent any leaks."

This was indeed a very reasonable explanation. The old City Guard was left speechless and could only pace back and forth in the pooling water, cursing. "Damn it, the shelters take priority, that makes sense—but aren’t the city gates important too?! When the waves come, this handful of sandbags and rocks won’t hold!"

At this very moment, looking down upon Naisel City from the sky, one could see teams of adventurers tearing down houses and using the materials to block the entrances and exits in the city walls.

Among them were numerous Casters. They cast spells on the sandbags and stone sacks, making them heavier and sturdier in an instant. There were also Earth and Water Spellcasters using spells that turned earth to stone, as well as the Ice Formation Skill, to reinforce the waterproof barriers.

Everyone was preparing to resist the flood.

However, Naisel City was simply too large, and there were too few Transcendents. Their actions weren’t entirely useless, but it was a drop in the ocean. Teams rushed back and forth, putting out fires everywhere, looking like busy ants.

But just as everyone was at their wits’ end, the situation took a turn for the worse.

「The great wave had arrived.」

RUUUUMBLE... The sound of the approaching tide was like rolling thunder.

On the city walls, the City Guards and adventurers responsible for observation turned pale. Any random section of the scene before them contained a roaring tide weighing hundreds, if not thousands, of tons. This was an attack that even an Elite Tier Professional would struggle to block alone.

Wherever the tidal wave passed, the moat outside the city and several fortress towers were completely destroyed and washed away. Trees along the path were uprooted. The force of the wave was so great that even some of the thickest trees were snapped in two.

Outside the walls, the cries of the refugees who had been clinging to life were extinguished in an instant. Inside the city, the lucky, fast-moving refugees who had made it in looked back with lingering fear at the city gates, now barricaded with all manner of sandbags, stones, and blocks of ice.

But now, jets of water were shooting ominously from the cracks in those makeshift dams, causing their eyes to widen in terror.

The first great wave crashed against the city walls. Although the walls themselves were sturdy and seemed to hold, the city gates shuddered violently as if struck by a giant hammer.

The temporary barricade teetered on the verge of collapse but managed to withstand the first wave. But waves are called waves for a reason—there is always a second.

BOOM! BOOM!

The sound of a massive impact rang out as another giant wave slammed violently against the outside of the city gate.

And then, the gate was breached. In an instant, the murky tide swept all the sandbags and stone sacks aside. The city gate was now like an out-of-control faucet, a violent torrent of water gushing through and flooding the city.

"It’s over... It’s all over..."

The Torrent came rushing in, sweeping through the streets like the impact of the Great Magic, ’Torrential Burial’. The stones on the street and the houses alongside it were instantly crushed, reduced to rubble and fragments. The City Guards who had fought so desperately now hid in areas where the current was weaker, watching the scene in despair.

"It was all for nothing..."

Seeing that the fruits of their labor couldn’t even withstand a few impacts, their faces turned ashen. The high-pitched cry of the giant island whale in the sky only deepened their despair and powerlessness.

"AAAAH! Help!"

The water was unstoppable. All they could do was retreat for now and see if they could build more buffer zones in the Inner City District.

But one of the honest-looking City Guards who had been reinforcing the waterproof dams lost his balance to an undercurrent and was instantly swept away. Fortunately, just before he was pulled into the rapids, he managed to grab the windowsill of a half-submerged house, narrowly avoiding disappearing into the water.

One could see that the house itself was teetering under the force of the current, ready to collapse at any moment.

"Over here! Grab the rope, I’ll pull you in."

From a safe area where the current was calmer, the anxious old City Guard threw a rope for the young man to grab. With the strength of a Transcendent, pulling one person to safety was no problem.

"Thank you, thank you, Captain, for saving my life!"

Having narrowly escaped death, the young man quickly grabbed the lifeline. He pulled himself along the rope, bit by bit, back toward the safer water—but just then, another disaster struck.

A piece of driftwood, carried in by the battering waves, shot out from the city gate like a cannonball, hurtling diagonally toward the area where the old City Guard stood!

’I can block it!’

But to block it, he would need both hands. That meant letting go of the rope!

In that split second, the old City Guard made his choice. With a furious shout, he gave one last, mighty pull, yanking the young City Guard out of the water and sending him flying through the air toward the calm shallows.

And at that same moment, he himself was struck by the driftwood.

In an instant, the old City Guard went silent, sinking beneath the surface and swept away by the current.

"Captain?!"

After falling from the air back into the water, now free of the undercurrent and able to move again, the first thing the young man did was to scan the area with wide eyes, searching for the old City Guard who had just saved his life.
