But the old captain had been swept away. He was gone from sight.
Submerged in the water, the old man did not die immediately.
And in the swift, murky currents, the old City Guard could faintly hear a multitude of sounds.
The tense discussions from the shelters... the cries for help from the city’s women and children... the even more desperate wails of the hopeless... the frantic shouts and spellcasting from the beleaguered City Guard Army and adventurers...
As he sank into the water, the old man, for some unknown reason, could suddenly hear the entire city’s anguished cries, and the sounds of others fighting back against this desperate situation.
’It’s not so bad.’
He wasn’t afraid of death. Honestly, that was what the old City Guard truly thought. ’The apocalypse is coming anyway, so it doesn’t seem to make much difference whether I die sooner or later.’
’But... what a pity.’ As his consciousness began to fade, the old man couldn’t help but think with a twinge of regret, ’I wanted to live a little longer, to see what this so-called apocalypse was all about, and how it would end up killing me... Now I’m dying early. I won’t get to see it.’
’A pity... Heh. Lev, you brat. You’re still young. An old man like me saving your life... it was worth it.’
’But you have to remember... see it for me. See what this apocalypse... does... to this world...’
His thoughts gradually faded away.
His breath ceased.
「At the same time, high in the sky.」
An azure meteor tore through the rain-soaked sky, ripping through the atmosphere. It descended from the heavens in a long arc, crashing directly into the floodwaters of the city and kicking up massive waves.
This time, cushioned by the layer of water, Su Zhou, who had arrived at full speed, didn’t need to waste much of his reserves to repair his injuries and regain his mobility.
’He’s dead...?’
Rushing toward the city gate that had been breached by the giant waves, he gazed in the direction the old City Guard had been swept away and couldn’t help but mutter to himself.
Su Zhou knew that old City Guard. He was the one who had let him into Naisel City in the first place. The man loved to play the teacher, doling out life lessons to the younger City Guards, whether it was on Magic techniques or the art of shaking people down.
He was by no means a Good Person. He often used his position to extort passing travelers and caravan members. Whenever he saw Su Zhou, he would run over to greet him and try to get friendly, all while implicitly carrying himself as one of Naisel City’s great benefactors. The man was incredibly thick-skinned.
Su Zhou hadn’t been particularly fond of the old City Guard, but he also knew that this was what a normal human was like—with a good side and a bad side. So he would still talk and chat with him as he would with anyone else.
But now, today, at this very moment, this old man who had not forsaken his duty had given his own life to save that of a young City Guard.
This old man, who had children and grandchildren and could have lived out his days peacefully before the apocalypse arrived, had made his choice.
CRACK-BOOM! A Thunderbolt exploded—across the sky, serpentine lightning danced wildly, its pale, white light illuminating the entire city.
In his silence, Su Zhou could hear the entire city filled with countless cries and pleas for help, a situation only worsened by the cold, pouring rain and the crashing Thunderbolts.
Most of the ordinary people who hadn’t made it to the shelters were on their rooftops, trembling as they watched the surging floodwaters rise within the city, completely at a loss. Meanwhile, the vast majority of Transcendents were busy reinforcing the city walls, and no one had time to help them.
"Who can help us..." This was the desperate voice of a man, accompanied by the sobbing of a woman and child beside him.
"Save Feina! Save her, *sob sob*, save my Feina..." This was the desperate cry of a middle-aged woman.
"Mama, Mama!" This was the cry of a child.
These voices seemed to echo in Su Zhou’s heart, causing him, who still appeared calm on the surface, to clench his fists involuntarily.
’None of this has anything to do with me... I don’t know these people. I, Su Zhou, am not even from this world. Whether they live or die, whatever their future holds, it has nothing to do with me.’
Theoretically, that was true.
’But why? I know this perfectly well, so why do I still feel so sad, and... angry?’
’What the hell is wrong with this damned world?!’
Anxiety, irritability, and frustration at his own lack of power—at this moment, Su Zhou’s heart was filled with endless questions. ’It’s the goddamn apocalypse, and people are still killing each other, still fighting amongst themselves—this kind of world!’
’Why?!’
’Why?’
For some reason, from deep within Su Zhou’s soul—from the remnants of the Evil Soul that were part of the Five Extremes Divine Thunder True Technique, from the National Preceptor’s inheritance he had long since absorbed—a question flowed forth. It was identical to Su Zhou’s own, as if resonating with him.
’Why does the rain not fall? Why are there plagues of locusts? Why are there blizzards and downpours, floods and tsunamis? Why is this world so full of suffering?’
’If Heaven and Earth will not give... must one then take?’
Su Zhou couldn’t understand what the will that represented Heaven and Earth truly wanted. Was it a God? Or was it the Great Being who constructed this world, the one called the Silent Lord? Whoever it was, why would they design such a world? What was their purpose...?
There was no more time to think.
Another great wave surged through the breach in the city gate, a murky wall of water rushing toward him like a charging, aquatic Giant Beast.
"Dammit!"
And Su Zhou also made his choice—a choice he had, in fact, made long ago. This time, however, he simply stopped thinking and cast aside all hesitation.
