Meanwhile, the distant battlefield fell into silence as well.
But this silence was not an end—it was a stalemate.
The colossal Water God was covered in wounds that looked like they’d been caused by explosions. In his True Body, Su Zhou’s attacks were no longer mere scratches; they were savage blows that could tear away chunks of its flesh. Cyan blood gushed endlessly from these wounds. The Giant Whale, now too weak to stanch the bleeding, could only let its blood saturate the surrounding water.
As for Su Zhou, his entire dragon form had vanished from sight.
And yet, one could faintly see the massive jaws of the dying Water God clamped shut.
It was straining, as if trying to crush something held within.
Inside the Giant Whale’s mouth, an equally exhausted Su Zhou—swallowed during the creature’s final Burst of power—was propping up its mountain-like upper jaw with his arms, just like a car jack. The gray-white Wingless Great Dragon’s feet had even dug into the Giant Whale’s flesh, but he was at his limit. The cracking sound of his arm bones about to shatter echoed in the tight space.
This had nothing to do with courage, will, or Determination. Against the Water God’s power, Su Zhou’s physical body was simply inferior. Even though the Giant Whale was now incredibly weak, struggling even to close its mouth, its sheer weight alone would be enough to crush Su Zhou to pieces the moment he faltered.
CRACK—
He couldn’t hold on. With a sharp crack, Su Zhou’s arms shattered. Bone fragments burst from his flesh like a blossoming white flower. He was forced to bend over, using his broad, draconic back to take the place of his arms and continue resisting the Giant Whale’s upper jaw.
In that instant, the Giant Whale’s massive jaws closed a little further, threatening to crush Su Zhou completely in the next moment.
At this point, both had lost the strength for words. One silently exerted its pressure; the other silently resisted.
Until a laugh broke the silence.
"I’m just about at my limit."
Blood was trickling from the corners of his eyes, his nose, and his mouth, but Su Zhou was laughing loudly as he spoke. "My Dragon Scales have reached their limit. They can’t absorb any more of my Spiritual Power to convert into shockwaves to block your crushing force."
"So, are you ready to surrender?" the Water God replied via Soul Communication, laughing as well. "It’s not too late to give up now."
"No."
Su Zhou slowly shook his head. "Don’t you get it yet? I can finally self-destruct."
The instant he finished speaking, the scales all over Su Zhou’s body began to glow with a white light.
The gray-white Dragon Scales of the Wingless Great Dragon were a unique creation of Su Zhou’s, prototyped from the Five Spirits Colored Scales. They could absorb Elemental Spiritual Power and convert it into other forms of Spiritual Power. These would then collide and neutralize each other, transforming into pure kinetic force that vented through pre-designed grooves, mitigating the damage from Spiritual Power attacks.
Likewise, Su Zhou could use these scales to convert his own Spiritual Power into pure kinetic force and strength, which was how he had been blocking the Giant Whale’s bite.
But the Dragon Scales had a limit. Once that limit was reached, they would explode.
A feature intended to function as reactive armor had now become Su Zhou’s final offensive measure.
And now, they exploded.
Amid a roar and a flash of intense light, endless lightning and Flame erupted from within the Water God’s mouth. For an instant, the Giant Whale’s jaws were forced open, and a mangled, bloody, wingless draconic form struggled to roll out. The concussion from the blast inside its mouth caused the Giant Whale to cough up a mouthful of blood.
"Aaaah—I can’t die! At least, not now! I can’t die yet—"
At the end of its life, the Water God was still struggling. Tears of blood streamed from the Giant Whale’s eyes. "No... If I die, my people..."
But this time, Su Zhou—prompting Yara to shake her head and mutter, ’He almost had to take it down with him and use Rebirth’—didn’t offer his usual Taunt.
He struggled to his feet and looked at the God, who was still muttering about its people even at the very end. He fell into silent thought.
’Good and evil are relative,’ he thought. ’Even a Monster that slaughters common people just to regain its strength is only trying to protect its own.’
’On the scale of Races and civilizations, does absolute justice even exist?’
"You asked me why—why I would fight for the Earth People, who have nothing to do with me. I gave you my answer."
Finally, facing the dying Water God, he slowly approached. Su Zhou seemed completely unafraid that it might suddenly lash out and swallow him whole. He posed a question. "And now, O Water God, I must ask you a ’why’ of my own."
"Why? At the end of an Era’s cycle, when the civilizations of the past are reborn, you could have communicated and cooperated with each other. You could have shared the insights you gained during your own apocalypses and prepared to face the end times together. You could have, without a doubt, pooled the strength of several Eras to make the best possible choice. So why did you have to fight and kill each other? Why let it all devolve into a massacre?"
It wasn’t that Su Zhou was siding with the Earth People. If the Earth People had been slaughtering the Water People, or the Wind People slaughtering the Water People—or if any being from any Era had done the same—he would have acted. If they had indiscriminately slaughtered the innocent elderly and children of another Race, civilians who posed no threat, merely to restore their own strength and for no nobler purpose, he would have stepped in without hesitation to stand before the ’weak.’
