Monsters Die When Killed

Chapter 443 - 21: Immortal Dragon Scale

[Evil Soul of the Lord of Ocean Currents·Tamburasa]

[Ruler of the nine seas and all oceans, protector of all Water People, the Divine Soul that seeks to restore the Era]

[The Soul of a Deity who would do anything to continue on]

[Consume directly: Greatly increases affinity for all Water Element Spiritual Power, greatly increases intimidation over aquatic life, and significantly increases the effects of Water Assistance.]

[Spiritual Refining: Can be refined into the ’Heart of the Ocean Current’ Attaching Spirit, which can be affixed to any equipment.]

[Special Forging: Can be forged into the ’Nine Seas·Torrential Wave Scepter’ Soul Weapon.]

[Special Preparation: Can be prepared and consumed to obtain the ’Power of Water God’ inheritance.]

[To them, everything besides their own people is but a trivial detail—such is the unique arrogance of Divine Beings.]

[But the arrogant will always meet someone even more arrogant, a realization everyone comes to sooner or later. After all, the matter of life is nothing more than an endless Reincarnation of taking and being taken.]

[I take from others, and others will surely take from me. This is the Celestial Principle, and nothing more. But how does one escape this Reincarnation? No one knows what answer to write on that perfect exam.]

The Water God’s Evil Soul surged like a tide. After losing the power of its master, the runaway nuclear heart exploded violently, turning the deity’s corpse into a cloud of scattered spray.

Watching the explosion, Su Zhou recalled the Evil Soul into his Soul Space. On the way back to Naisel City, he mulled over many things.

The actions of the Water God and its followers were understandable. In an undeveloped Magic World that likely hadn’t even discovered the technology for Otherworld exploration, the destruction and Rebirth brought by the turning of an Era was a truly cataclysmic disaster. They were like the Three-Body People from a certain sci-fi novel; they faced a catastrophe but had no time to even study it, and their progress bar was reset again and again with each new Era.

There were several ways for them to perpetuate their civilizations. One was to use the revival of the Maze as an opportunity for multiple Eras to exchange research data, compile information, and pass it down from one generation to the next. This way, they might one day uncover the truth behind the changing of Eras.

The other way was to slaughter each other and compete for the New Era Core that emerged at the end, thereby ensuring that they and their civilization would adapt to the form of the next Era.

In reality, the predicament of the Tartadis World was even greater than that of the Three-Body People from the novel. At least for the Three-Body People, each new era featured the same race, so communication was not an issue. But in this world, after an Era changed, both the races and the living environments were completely different, making it difficult to communicate and exchange information.

The most viable path to survival, then, was to obtain the ’Era Core’ spoken of by the gods and thus become the protagonist of the next Era.

But there was only one Era Core. If one side obtained it, would they let the others live? If one side had it, wouldn’t the others fight for it? Even if a stronger faction wanted to be benevolent, wouldn’t the weaker ones band together to oppose them in secret? And would they ever trust the goodwill of a stronger power? They would surely see it as some kind of trap.

Who could possibly know the likelihood of multiple factions of deities allying with and then betraying one another? This was not something one could gamble on ’possibilities’—especially when the civilization born from each new Era was a different race from the last, with even their living environments being vastly different. The chance of them sharing the Era Core was practically zero.

Naturally, no one would entrust their right to survive into the hands of another.

The safest method was to eliminate all other factions and monopolize the Era Core.

To this end, the deities, as the strongest powerhouses of their civilizations, had to restore their power as quickly as possible. Blood sacrifices of individuals from other factions was one such method.

Of course, all of this seemed to have nothing to do with Su Zhou, who was from an Otherworld. This mutual slaughter appeared to be a natural law of this Otherworld, an inherent prisoner’s dilemma. Without external force, it was nearly impossible to break this Reincarnation. For an outsider to interfere would be like forcibly stripping one side of their right to survive. After all, stopping a massacre by interfering with a group’s attempt at self-preservation was like forcing the strong to die for the weak. In essence, both actions were equally vile.

But slaughter is wrong—no matter the reason.

Su Zhou’s thinking was as simple as a primary schooler’s: ’Since the Water God made the choice to slaughter other beings to survive, then they must have also been prepared to be killed by other beings, right?’

The power of the Evil-Devouring Demon Lord was just that simple and straightforward. This wasn’t a Divine Technique a kind person could awaken, but a power more evil than evil, more demonic than any Demon.

’As for their reasons, their talk of survival... in the end, it’s just another survival instinct. How is that any nobler than eating, drinking, or fucking? Since they made the judgment of a beast, they’d best not blame others for treating them like beasts, right?’

’Civilization is what elevates us above the instinctual desires of beasts. If you can’t even transcend that, why bother calling yourself a person instead of a beast?’

This was Su Zhou’s logic. It wasn’t about black and white, but about judging actions, not intentions. Committing evil acts for a noble cause? Sure, that was possible. But if others did the same to them in return, then one shouldn’t offer any misplaced sympathy. The saying goes, "Do not do to others what you would not have them do to you." Conversely, if you have already done it to others, then having the same thing done to you is just the cycle of the Celestial Principle. There should be no room for complaint.
