Monsters Die When Killed

Chapter 452 - 23: Netherworld Maze and the Wind God

7th Layer·Hurricane Cliff.

This layer probably represented the domain of the Wind God and the bygone Era of Wind. Of course, the connection might not be perfect. After all, rather than a recreation of past Eras, the Maze was more like a ’Netherworld’ that stored their information.

Yes, the Netherworld. That was how Su Zhou viewed the Maze.

At first, influenced by all sorts of strange concepts from Earth’s entertainment culture, video games, and novels, Su Zhou had actually thought the Maze was some kind of post-apocalyptic dungeon meant simply for grinding monsters and leveling up. However, as his understanding of the Tartadis World grew, he discovered that elements of the Maze had an extremely clear connection to the Netherworld and Reincarnation represented by the Silent Lord.

First, the Maze was located underground, and the creatures living within it were very likely—perhaps even certainly—recreations of the departed souls and biological information from life in past Eras. Living in the Maze was, in effect, living in the Netherworld. It was only because the surface world had fallen into a dead silence, transforming the entire world into a silent Netherworld in a sense, that these subterranean Netherworlds opened up and connected with the surface.

Moreover, the Water God and the Unicorn People had also clearly revived from within the Maze. When they died in the past, they obviously weren’t completely annihilated by the process of the Era’s transition. A remnant of them was preserved in the Maze, waiting for the land to return to a Netherworld state before re-emerging to interact with the outside world—and then to fight and kill each other.

In a way, this was a war between the Netherworld and the Current Realm—an element that had also appeared in some mythologies.

Besides related elements like being underground and being a Netherworld, Reincarnation was also obvious—the transition of Eras, the birth of a new Era, and the revival of Deities from old Eras. Even if this wasn’t related to Elemental Reincarnation, the process itself was a symbol of Reincarnation.

Therefore, Hurricane Cliff, and the seventh layer of Mazes all over the world, likely represented the Netherworld of the ancient Era of Wind.

And the Magical Beasts living in Hurricane Cliff were likely the intelligent lifeforms of the Era of Wind.

However, from what Su Zhou had seen, most of these Magical Beasts were giant insects, which made him wonder silently, ’Could the Wind God be some kind of giant insect too?’

"As long as it’s not a cockroach..." he muttered, entertaining the obviously unlikely theory. He then crossed the gateway between the seventh and eighth layers—a hidden, subterranean hot spring situated between two cliffs.

Steam, heated to several hundred degrees, filled the air around the massive hot spring. The spring-fed lake, hundreds of meters wide, was already boiling. It gushed out from a fissure, forming a jet of hot vapor dozens of meters high.

Even an Extraordinary Tier being who could withstand this high temperature probably wouldn’t deliberately enter to explore unless absolutely necessary. After all, being blasted by this high-temperature steam was like having your skin branded with a red-hot iron rod.

But when Su Zhou passed through it, it felt like a hot shower. It even cleaned out the gaps between his scales so thoroughly that he couldn’t resist taking a quick rinse. This prompted a complaint from the resting Yara: "This water is a bit hard. If you shower here, Su Zhou, you’ll get limescale on your scales."

"As a Dragon, you have to be very careful about maintaining your scales. You can’t be so unrefined."

Su Zhou, thinking she was making a fuss over nothing, was slightly taken aback. "Really? Are they that high-maintenance?"

"Of course!"

The fussy snake and the less-than-fussy man quickly passed through the area of superheated subterranean water, where they could even hear the sound of flowing magma.

8th Layer·Mist Domain.

The mysterious Spiritual Qi mist, which could block both Spiritual Sense and Spiritual Energy Perception, was still incredibly dense. But now, Su Zhou could perceive what it was: the Water God’s Divine Power.

It was precisely the Water God’s Divine Power that blocked others from perceiving the situation on this layer.

And now, having devoured the Water God’s Evil Soul and gained the highest possible affinity for the Power of Water, Su Zhou could easily break through the barrier of the Water God’s Divine Power and explore this section of the Maze with ease.

He even had a faint sense, an intuition that a certain power was guiding him in a specific direction.

This felt very much like the kind of premonition or ’flag’ you’d see in a horror game. Naturally, Su Zhou wasn’t afraid. ’I already killed the Water God. What could His leftover power possibly do to me?’ He’d let that statement stand for now. If he ended up eating his words, he’d take it back.

He encountered no Magical Beasts or any other dangers along the way. Following the guidance, his journey was incredibly smooth, and he soon arrived at a cluster of ancient buildings.

It was a bizarre cluster of divine halls, its aesthetics completely different from human sensibilities, yet it still evoked a sense of ’magnificence’ and ’grandeur’.

The divine halls were forged entirely from a translucent, light-blue crystal. They had no obvious doors, but there were entrances all over. This created a strange sense of transparency, with openings and passages on every side—top, bottom, left, and right.

Rather than sitting in the subterranean mist, it clearly seemed better suited to appearing in the tranquil sea, floating amidst the ocean currents.

Looking at it, Su Zhou could vaguely imagine a bygone scene: countless schools of fish swimming from all directions, entering this Divine Hall as it floated in the seawater.

But the image was fleeting. He had already strode inside.

Inside the Divine Hall, the path was lined with numerous bas-reliefs and statues carved from the same light-blue crystal. They seemed to tell an ancient story. Naturally, Su Zhou started from the beginning, following the reliefs and making his way, step by step, toward the very core of the Divine Hall.
