Monsters Die When Killed
Chapter 453 - 23: Netherworld Maze and the Wind GodIn the very beginning, the world was filled with gales and darkness; everything was Chaos and Void.
The relief depicted the gales with a tangle of crystal lines and the darkness with a background of dim, deep-blue crystals.
Afterward, water condensed from the wind. The water turned to rain and flooded the Chaos. This first great storm raged for seven thousand days and nights, causing the Chaos to recede, and the sea was born.
A God moved through the sea, swimming amidst the echoes of the gales and the last of the great rain.
A statue of a Giant Whale could be seen swimming out of what looked like Gray Mist, alongside reliefs representing the storm and the great sea. Su Zhou could tell at a glance that the Giant Whale was the Water God. The Crystal Stones on its head weren’t very large yet; compared to the later crown shape, they looked like three small dots.
However, he found it a little strange. ’There’s no sign of a battle with the Wind God? Right, the Water God did say at the end that He was the first-generation Water God of this current cycle of Reincarnation. He was probably a new life born in the New Era. The Wind God and the other Gods of the previous generation had already finished their battle, and there were no winners. But if that’s the case, where did He get information about the previous Water God?’
But soon, the reliefs answered his question.
At the ends of the great ocean, at the bottom of all seas, the God measured the size of the world for all living beings, divided the territories of the nine seas, and named every race.
After completing all this work, the God received the world’s Blessing, becoming the master of the nine seas and all oceans.
On the reliefs, a Giant Whale roamed far and wide. He named every new undersea creature He encountered, giving them their names in the language of the Era of Water. After that came a long series of statues: Shell People, Whale People, Fishmen, Mermaids, and many other ocean races.
Su Zhou patiently examined each statue. Then, he saw the Water God in the deepest part of the ocean, obtaining some kind of glowing object. The relief wasn’t clear enough to show details, but after the Water God acquired it, the Crystal Stones on His head grew larger, forming a crown.
That was likely the moment He was crowned as a God.
The subsequent reliefs and statues depicted the Water God’s many accomplishments while ruling the world, such as establishing massive underwater cities, coordinating peace among the Ten Thousand Races, and forging the great nation of the Venerable God Alliance. The civilization of the Water People didn’t advance very quickly, but they did develop medieval-style magic processing techniques that could convert seawater into solid water crystals for construction and tool-making.
They even built enormous tidal waterwheels within the ocean currents to collect and store their power.
After seeing it all, Su Zhou hadn’t found any noteworthy information. This left him somewhat disappointed. ’Is that it?’
It wasn’t that he didn’t admire the civilization of the Era of Water, but that was a whole Era ago. What Su Zhou needed most right now was information on how to save this world and break the cycle of Eras—information about the beginning and end of an Era.
Obviously, the Water God Divine Hall wouldn’t have a record of the Era’s end inscribed here. And as for the beginning of the Era, there didn’t seem to be much information either.
"You should take another look."
Just as Su Zhou was about to go back and look again, Yara offered the same advice, making him nod. "As expected of you!"
Yara said, "Huh? Oh, right. As expected of me!"
Though she didn’t seem to understand why, the Snake Spirit was clearly not the modest type.
On his fourth time looking through them, Su Zhou finally noticed something.
’Wait, how did this Giant Whale appear?’
He latched onto that faint sense of wrongness. ’Water was born from the wind, which means the Era of Wind ended and the Era of Water began. That part is fine, but how did the whale just appear?’
’Even jellyfish on Earth only appeared after billions of years. Okay, let’s say this is a Magic World, so we don’t need to think about evolution. We can just throw everything in—world information transference, Void Birth, nurtured by heaven and earth, all of it. But even so, the birth of the Water God itself is still something worth examining.’
’And it’s precisely these seemingly simple details that might be the key to the truth behind this world.’
’Also, this abstract imagery behind the whale... why does it look a bit like the Gray Mist?’
The Gray Mist was the strange natural phenomenon currently engulfing the entire world. According to reports from the scout team dispatched by the previous Duke, the edges of the world were now completely shrouded in it.
Although the Gray Mist wasn’t lethal and humans suffered no ill effects from entering it, any area it covered was completely devoid of life, leaving behind only inorganic matter like sand and stone.
But now, as Su Zhou carefully observed the relief, he could see it. If he interpreted the abstract elements in the relief as the Gray Mist, then the Water God’s original form—the Giant Whale—seemed to have been born from it. It was a creature born from the Gray Mist at the very beginning of the world!
By the same logic, Su Zhou could also suspect that all creatures at the dawn of the New Era were directly birthed by the Gray Mist. Furthermore, they appeared as fully mature forms, complete and without evolutionary defects. Only this could explain how the world’s creatures were able to develop even a basic civilization within a short Era of just ten or twenty thousand years.
