But here in the Reincarnation World, the problem each Era faced was simply that no civilization had ever become powerful enough. Their strongest, the Divine Beings, were merely Overlord Earth Immortals, to say nothing of the higher tiers like Immortal Heavenly Immortals and Celestial Venerate Creators.
If they had such beings, then just as the Celestial Venerable of old was able to lead the Ancient Earth Immortal God Civilization away from the Earth World, those powerful beings could have led the life in this Reincarnation World away from it. Or they could have led a group of survivors through the transition between Eras to live on into the next. All of these were very real possibilities.
’—From this perspective, Earth and the Reincarnation World are surprisingly similar...’ Su Zhou couldn’t help but mutter to himself, but then he decisively shook his head.
’No, that’s not right. Rather than saying the Earth World is similar to the Reincarnation World, it’s more accurate to say that the Reincarnation World is a simplified, more basic version of the Earth World.’
’And it’s not just the Earth World. The Reincarnation World is likely a microcosm of the vast majority of worlds across the All Heavens and Myriads of Worlds, specifically in respect to Reincarnation!’
He now also understood why the Wind God wasn’t interested in the Otherworld. After all, the continuation of the Wind People had apparently gone on for a very long time, and quite stably at that.
’That being the case, since other worlds also have Reincarnation, why go to an unfamiliar world instead of staying in this one, where it’s already been proven that the Wind People can exist for the long term?’
"You understand now, don’t you?"
Seeing Su Zhou’s undisguised look of realization, the Wind God gave a world-weary smile and said in a low voice, "Besides, I’m not actually looking forward to a second Era of Wind at all."
This answer truly stunned Su Zhou, making the Great Dragon lower his head, his Dragon Eyes fixed intently on the other being. He completely forgot his earlier intention to maintain a calm demeanor.
’He doesn’t want a second Era of Wind?’
’The Water God was willing to slaughter a city and fight me to the death for the chance to have a second Era, yet the Wind God’s attitude is to reject it?’
Under Su Zhou’s focused gaze, the Wind God raised his head.
He gazed at the gray sky, at the endless Gray Mist and the sun that had grown so dim it was nearly devoid of light, and stated in a faint tone:
"Flame first created the wind."
"A great fire burned, giving birth to endless winds from within its inferno, which lifted up a continent formed from the gathered ashes of the Flame."
"That was the ’Age of Sky Islands,’ known as the Era of Wind."
"On the Sky Islands, giant insects thrived and nurtured a prosperous civilization. Flying insects traveled between the various Sky Islands, while terrestrial insects built magnificent cities underground. That was the glorious civilization forged by my people, of whom I was so proud."
"But in the end, at the close of the Era, the Flame was extinguished. The Gales vanished along with it, and a great torrential rain began to pour. The Sky Island World, once held aloft by the wind, fell with that endless downpour."
Speaking softly in that same faint tone, the Wind God met Su Zhou’s gaze. Even through his Mimic Shell, his eyes were now filled with endless pain and terror. "That was the ’Age of the Fall’—a fall into the endless Abyss that lasted for centuries, with no end in sight."
"Be they King or beggar, every single one of the Wind People knew that death was coming, but the apocalypse was so agonizingly slow to arrive—just as the Earth People, after enduring a millennium of immense suffering and patience, lost all their will to fight and became mere survivors who could only eke out a miserable existence in their shelters, awaiting death."
"My people, in their terror of the long fall, ultimately chose to abandon their pride as intelligent life forms, as members of a civilization. They chose to follow the Secret Technique left behind by previous generations of Wind Gods, wishing only to become tiny crawling things and survive within this Reincarnation at any cost."
The Wind God, who had seemed flippant, even childlike and not entirely serious, now made a sound like the grating of shell against shell. The pain contained within it was so profound that even a child who didn’t understand the language would likely have felt it.
Su Zhou listened in silence. The massive Dragon squatted before the Wind God’s human-like form, listening to his pain.
’—Faced with the terror at the end of a Reincarnation cycle, his people had chosen the death of their civilization, devolving into beasts.’
’But the Divine Beings, with their Immortal nature, were burdened with the mission of reawakening with each turn of the Reincarnation cycle. They would revive in the next era, gaining the chance to interact with the civilizations of other Eras, or to fight for the next one.’
’But even so, recreating the Era of Wind, the Age of Sky Islands, also meant there would eventually be a second Age of the Fall—a second time watching his civilization choose death, abandon its culture and wisdom, and devolve into crawling things. An endless humiliation.’
And so, in the end, the Wind God just muttered, "If Reincarnation means yesterday must be repeated, then I would rather not have such a cyclical Era at all."
"Then, Wind God, what is it that you want?"
At this point, Su Zhou was genuinely confused. Even with the aid of the Wisdom Fruit, he couldn’t figure out why the Wind God had come to see him. The Wind God didn’t need to protect his people, nor did he desire the coming of the next Era of Wind... So what did he want?
’How should I put this? The Water God and the Wind God are two extremes. The Water God wants many things: he needs the environment of the next Era, he wants to protect his people, and he wants to continue the civilization of the Water People.’
’The Wind God, on the other hand, just needs the Wind People—the insects—to exist. That’s enough for him.’
’These are two completely different kinds of Gods. The former was destined to have dealings with me, but as for the latter... I can’t find any reason why he would need to meet with me. In a world where Reincarnation is the greatest source of conflict, he actually doesn’t desire its recurrence. He’s practically an outsider.’
"It’s simple. I originally thought you were like me, an individual who only needs to ensure their own survival into the next Era."
The Wind God shrugged with his humanoid shoulders. "So I thought I’d come over and discuss something with you. Could you perhaps give the chance to choose the next Era to me?"
"Why?"
Su Zhou subconsciously raised his voice, which boomed like a Dragon Roar. "Didn’t you just say you don’t want to continue the Reincarnation?"
As he spoke, fragments of scorching heat, gales, and lightning-like Spiritual Light began to form with his every breath. Su Zhou’s gaze locked onto the Wind God, his eyes turning cold. "Wind God, if you think you can fool me just because I seem easy to talk to, you’re dead wrong! When I’m in a bad mood, I make sure the person who caused it never has a mood to speak of ever again!"
"How could I possibly think that a powerhouse who would fight the Water God to the death for the sake of ordinary Earth People could be so easily fooled?"
The Wind God opened his arms toward Su Zhou, retracting his Spiritual Qi fluctuations to show he truly had no hostile intent. He said with what was almost a bitter laugh, "As for why I seem to be going back on my word... it’s because only a God, with their long lifespan, can truly witness the despair of the Age of the Fall."
"During the centuries the Sky Islands fell, how many generations of Wind People (insects) came and went? By the time of their final demise, the Wind People of that era couldn’t perceive anything. Only a God, a God who will be revived, would feel that such a Reincarnation is meaningless."
"To individuals who live within the Reincarnation, who can’t even perceive its existence, the Eras have meaning. My people, without a doubt, all yearn for the next Era of Wind. They couldn’t care less about the terror and despair at the end of an Era, nor the humiliation of abandoning their civilization."
"And I, after all, am a God."
The Wind God "smiled," but his tone was like a sigh as he said, "A God... is a wish. I am the heavenly gale that answers the wishes of my people, the benevolent God who bestows hope—since my people want the next Era, even if it’s a Reincarnation that merely repeats yesterday, I will fight to obtain it for them."
