Monsters Die When Killed

Chapter 472 - 29: Perpetual Reincarnation

And the Snake arrived.

Along with its Contractor.

Su Zhou watched everything that appeared before him. He felt as if he were submerged in absolute darkness and Void, while before his eyes, the endless Reincarnations of the Tartadis World played out.

Endless repetition, endless Reincarnation. The long cycles lasted tens of thousands of years, the short ones over ten thousand. Because of the Gray Mist and the Netherworld, new life was born rapidly, time and again, nurturing brand-new civilizations—but a mere ten thousand years was absolutely not enough time for a single civilization to develop to the point of realizing the truth. Nor was it enough for them to find a way to transcend this Reincarnation by their own strength.

This was Reincarnation.

Whether it was earth, water, fire, and wind, or metal, wood, water, fire, and Earth.

Whether it was Yin Yang Reincarnation, or the cycle of Light and Dark.

Even if countless more Elements were added, making it ever more complex and varied.

Reincarnation was Reincarnation.

In the end, what they called Reincarnation was simply the repetition of what had already occurred. It was an old tale beneath the sun, something that had already happened and was bound to happen again. To transcend Reincarnation, one had to do something unprecedented.

"When, precisely, will you transcend Reincarnation?"

From the great unseen, such a voice rang out.

Su Zhou raised his head, his blue-violet Dragon Pupils surveying the endless darkness. Within the gloom, he could see stars wavering. An aura from a distant, ancient eternity was being drawn forth. A tremendous vibration shuddered through the All Heavens and Myriads of Worlds. A colossal Spirit Sound, so vast it seemed it would shatter the very Cosmos, rang out from the periphery of the world.

—The dawn of birth, the dark night of death’s return—

—The end of corruption, the beginning of Rebirth—

—Nurturer of all creation, Giver of destiny—

—All praise the Silent Lord!—

—Source of life, final abode of death, King of the Netherworld, Master of Reincarnation!—

A massive, overlapping wheel of concentric rings of light appeared. It seemed to be layered into infinity; no matter how one looked toward its center, one could only see circle after circle, with neither end nor boundary in sight.

The Light of Silence, sacred and still, seemed to promise eternal, restful sleep to all things. It traveled from a distant shore, materializing before Su Zhou.

He saw it.

It was a cloud of silent mist—formless, substanceless. Though it drifted slowly, it gave off a sense of eternal, unchanging Silence.

And now, Su Zhou also saw the world, held in the embrace of this Gray Mist.

The Reincarnation of Elements, the succession of worlds, the transition and Rebirth of Eras—all of it took place within the embrace of this mist.

Su Zhou could even see what lay beyond the Gray Mist—it was the ’Ice-Crystallized Void,’ a sight he had only glimpsed before while traversing worlds with the help of the Celestial God Seal.

A completely frozen Void. The light of all worlds was like Ice Crystals, frozen in place. And there, within that Void, the Gray Mist quietly embraced this one small world.

It was this Gray Mist that had gathered the Stardust from countless shattered worlds of the past. It had collected the endless fragments of worlds and reforged them.

It had not done anything extraneous. It was simply that all things were born from It, and because of It, they were trapped in Reincarnation.

The Great Being did not help them grow, nor did It help them resist their final fate. It only helped them return from the Netherworld, again and again. It sowed the seeds of new life for each new Era, again and again, letting them start over, again and again.

"When, precisely, will you transcend Reincarnation?"

That voice from the great unseen echoed once more. This time, however, a colossal Spirit Sound, one that seemed capable of tearing the Cosmos asunder, reverberated through the Void along with it. It was a sound like countless voices, like innumerable people speaking at once, and its vibrations shook the Spirit Realm. Su Zhou, who had thought himself long past the point of being affected by Spirit Sounds, felt his own sanity threatening to shatter before the frenzied noise. It was a long while before his mind cleared and he recovered.

Su Zhou finally understood. This was the Silent Lord.

Its erosion value had reached eighty percent, and the Seal was on the verge of being utterly broken. This was the Great Being whose mere incarnation as the Gray Mist was enough to envelop the world and establish the law of Reincarnation.

The colossal Spirit Sound boomed, like innumerable people simultaneously repeating entirely different phrases. It was incomprehensible, seemingly devoid of all meaning.

"If you expect them to transcend Reincarnation... then why not give them a hint?"

But Su Zhou was never one to feel fear simply because he was facing a powerful being.

Facing the Gray Mist incarnated before him, he took a step forward into the dark Void and declared loudly, "If you’d given them even the slightest hint, they would have certainly tried, wouldn’t they? If there had been even a sliver of hope to serve as a foundation for mutual trust, the civilizations of the various Eras would never have resorted to fighting each other to the death! Even if they couldn’t sit down and communicate, they would at least have known that mutual slaughter wasn’t the only possible outcome!"

"Or just a little more time! Not even that much. Once a civilization had explored the entire world and found nowhere else to go, they would have inevitably tried to explore beyond it! As long as they developed the technology to explore Otherworlds, that would also count as transcending Reincarnation, wouldn’t it!"

Yara also appeared on Su Zhou’s shoulder. It did not say a word, but the very fact that the red Snake Spirit had appeared before the Silent Lord was significant in itself.

"The hint was given long ago, and they have already transcended a part of Reincarnation."

The voice from the great unseen and the colossal Spirit Sound then reverberated in alternation: "It is just that beyond the Reincarnation of personal life and death, there is also the Reincarnation of a civilization’s destruction and rebirth, the Reincarnation of the cyclical succession of Eras, and the Reincarnation of a world’s decay and renewal."
