But for some reason, he suddenly stopped mid-stride.
All eyes immediately fell on him.
"Su Zhou?" The Daoist Saint held up the terminal in his hand—the anchor for the Teleportation Array. The old man asked, a hint of confusion in his voice, "What’s wrong? Hurry over. The mission is complete."
The words were perfectly ordinary, as normal as could be.
But it was precisely because the mission had been completed successfully...
...that Su Zhou stopped in his tracks.
At that moment, he finally made his decision.
’Su Zhou, why have you stopped?’
At the same time, Yara’s voice echoed in his mind, softly asking for his reason. It chuckled, its tone thought-provoking. ’What is it you want to do now?’
’Be myself.’
Su Zhou replied simply, a faint smile on his lips. ’Right now, I’m not the "Deputy Captain of the Zhengguo Reconnaissance Team for the Beast God Realm’s Tree of Life" anymore. I’m "Su Zhou."’
With that, he turned his head again, looking back in the direction they had flown from. His gaze fell upon everything he had witnessed, everything that now weighed on his mind.
’How do the ordinary beasts and Spirit Beasts of the Beast God Realm actually live?’
’What do they think of this twisted world?’
’Those Spirit Beasts who mutilate themselves to please the Divine Beasts, who even consider being eaten a blessing... do they truly enjoy this life? Do they really believe all of this is right and are they happy to go on living this way?’
Su Zhou wanted to know these things.
He had to know now. He couldn’t wait.
He couldn’t stand it for even one more second.
"I’m sorry."
So, he turned to the Daoist Saint and the rest of his teammates and slowly shook his head.
"You all go on ahead," the young man said calmly. "Don’t wait for me, and don’t worry."
"I’m just going to kill a few Divine Beasts and ask some questions. I’ll be right back."
His words were incredibly simple. It was a statement that should have been utterly shocking, but because it was Su Zhou who said it, everyone present found it perfectly natural.
—Come to think of it, this was him they were talking about. A mission this smooth and easy was never going to satisfy his appetite, was it?
"That guy... he probably hasn’t had his fill of killing yet. His demonic nature is terrifying. He’s practically a Demon!" Jin Qiong muttered under her breath. But then she remembered that Su Zhou had already advanced to the Commander Tier, meaning his hearing was probably sharp enough to pick up a worm squirming underground. She instantly clapped a hand over her mouth in terror.
But Su Zhou paid her no mind. He’d known for a while that Jin Qiong occasionally vented about him on a private social media account. So what? She didn’t mean any harm. She was just telling the truth, and sometimes the truth sounded a lot like criticism.
So, he just smiled and bid farewell to each of his temporary teammates.
"The Divine Beasts of the Beast God Realm possess power equivalent to the Commander Tier."
The old man replied with a helpless sigh. "You may have said you can take on five at once, but if you really fight them, even you could be in danger... Ah, forget it."
The Daoist Saint trailed off, losing the heart to continue his warning. ’If Su Zhou were the kind of person who could be swayed by words,’ he thought, ’why would I have spent the last two years so carefully trying to guide him into Zhengguo’s system?’
’Now, he could clearly see the beast hidden in Su Zhou’s heart baring its fangs at this twisted Beast God Realm.’
’How can this beast be controlled? How can it be made to serve our nation, our civilization, our human race?’
’No, it’s not about using him... I just hope that someone with his Talent and power doesn’t become the kind of tyrant who wants to twist the entire world to his will, to rule it all by himself.’
’As long as this beast doesn’t turn its fangs on humanity... that will be enough.’
’For that... if he wants to be willful once in a while, then let him. No matter how tame a tiger seems, it will always long to roar through the mountains.’
"Su Zhou."
The Daoist Saint opened his mouth, intending to offer a few words of advice, but the words caught in his throat.
’Don’t die? What a joke. If Su Zhou fought the Divine Beasts of the Beast God Realm, who would be the one to die? He was betting it wouldn’t be Su Zhou.’
’Kill fewer of them? Even more ridiculous. He, Zhang Qingyun, wasn’t an idiot. The Divine Beasts of the Beast God Realm were all great enemies of humankind. He couldn’t wait for Su Zhou to kill more of them—ideally, all of them.’
’Watch out for yourself? Stay safe?’
’What’s the difference between that and telling someone to drink more hot water? It’s all just useless platitudes!’
The old man opened his mouth, then slowly closed it again. After a dozen seconds of silence, he could only shake his head and let out a soft, resigned laugh. "I don’t know what you’re planning... but good luck. And here, take this."
With that, the Daoist Saint pulled a miniature camera from his robes. "If you see anything worth recording, record it. We still need to collect more data to study this world."
"Yeah, no problem."
Su Zhou replied with a smile. It was as sunny and cheerful as ever, giving no hint as to what he was truly thinking.
At that very moment, dawn broke over the Beast God Realm.
Bright sunlight rose from the distant horizon, casting an orange-red glow. Su Zhou stood in the shadow of the Tree of Life, his feet planted on the pitch-black earth. The Teleportation Array had already begun to activate, its ghostly blue light gradually enveloping the Daoist Saint and his team.
Then, amidst flashes of brilliant Spiritual Light, the Daoist Saint, Jin Qiong, and the others watched in shock.
Su Zhou’s body, bathed in a blinding cyan-purple radiance, began to rapidly expand, swell, and transform... Within a few short seconds, they saw a Dragon Beast nearly thirty meters tall, incredibly robust and majestic, appear upon the land amidst a howling Gale and the overflowing Spiritual Light of Demon Fire.
It was a Great Dragon that walked upright on thick, powerful legs. Its body was covered in pale, smooth Scale Armor, with patterns of cyan-purple, fluorescent Crystal Stones spreading across its form. This Wingless Great Dragon had an incredibly thick tail. Where four giant wings should have been, there were instead four huge openings. Structures resembling cannon barrels or rocket nozzles extended from them, emitting a cold, metallic glint.
"What... what kind of Dragon is that?!"
Liu Wuxin had honed his physical body to the absolute limit, making him extremely sensitive. He could feel his skin sting just from proximity, as if his very flesh was being crushed by the sheer Spiritual Pressure. He cried out in astonishment, "Is that Su Zhou’s True Body?! That’s Su Zhou’s True—"
’—Body! So powerful!’
The others all cried out in unison, "Su Zhou revealed his True Body?!"
"I thought it wasn’t ready yet..."
"I’ve never seen this kind of Dragon before, but it feels a bit like a Ying..."
The startled cries were cut short.
The Teleportation began—and in an instant, it was over.
Before they could even finish expressing their awe, the entire Zhengguo Action Team had been teleported away.
But Su Zhou, now in his True Body, closed his eyes. He listened to a hum in the far, far distance, and to something even more distinct than the hum: several massive, dense clusters of Life Spiritual Light.
’They’re on their way.’
Su Zhou opened his eyes again. The Great Dragon’s maw twisted into a smile—it was hard to tell if it was a savage grin or a cold sneer. ’Perfect timing.’
With that thought, the Giant Dragon stepped forward, heading in the direction from which the Divine Beasts were approaching.
The earth trembled, heralding the arrival of the behemoth.
He was on his way.
