To enslave a race, one must erase their civilization, destroy their faith, rewrite their history, and replace their language. One must make them forget their former glory, then use the harshest methods to shatter their pride as sentient beings, forcing them to kneel and wholeheartedly believe they are nothing more than slaves to others.
But such enslavement is inherently flawed. For no matter how much is erased, destroyed, rewritten, or replaced, as long as the smallest crack or opportunity remains, someone will inevitably rediscover their race’s dignity and pride from forgotten histories or word-of-mouth legends. And then, they will raise the banner of rebellion.
This is the will branded into a civilization’s very bloodline, and it is far simpler to destroy it completely than to enslave it perfectly.
But what if a race—or many races—has no such history to awaken its people? What if, since birth, they have always been slaves and sustenance for another class? Does that mean they are doomed beyond redemption, destined to be slaves for eternity?
Of course, it does.
Because they have never tasted freedom, they mistake obedience for the supreme truth.
The Divine Beasts control everything in the Beast God Realm. The Combat Species of Spirit Beasts fight and work for the Divine Beasts, ruling over the lower classes. The Production Species of Spirit Beasts serve the two upper classes by producing goods. The Slave Species provides the most basic resources. And the Devotion Species are nothing more than fields of flesh to be harvested.
In the Beast God Realm of old, the Primordial Ancestors of the Divine Beasts must have been intelligent, patient, and farsighted beings who truly understood the concept of "civilization." As disciples of the Immortal Gods, they had clearly mastered their teachings. They must have truly understood the societal structure and future vision the Immortal Gods had imparted, and they knew what a "human civilization" ought to look like.
However, it was precisely because they understood so completely that, after long deliberation, they rejected such a future. They reverted to their primal nature and chose to create the world that is now the Beast God Realm—a world of supreme inequality.
—Because such a world would not serve the interests of the Divine Beast class.
The Order bestowed by the Immortal Gods would have weakened the Divine Beasts’ authority, reducing them to mere powerful individuals. Although they would still have been among the most privileged leaders of civilization, they would no longer have been supreme kings.
The freedom to eat or kill as they pleased, to roam the world without restraint—all of it would have been shackled. The primal, bestial urge to hunt other creatures at will could never again be sated.
Therefore, the Divine Beasts would never accept such a path, even if it meant being sealed within the Beast God Realm, forever unable to venture into the outside world.
But the Divine Beasts were greedy. They naturally understood the benefits of civilization and intellect. Being a chieftain among a group of primitives was far worse than being an ordinary person in modern society. By the same token, being a tyrant in the barbaric wilderness of the Beast God Realm was less rewarding than imparting some knowledge to the other Spirit Beasts, letting them build an "Order" that would offer up everything to the Divine Beasts.
The efficiency of exploitation advances with the times. Devouring Spirit Beasts at whim would only cause them to fear, band together in resistance, and become much harder to catch. It was far better to win over one faction to suppress another, to let the slaves handle themselves, to make them use their own hearts to enslave themselves.
Without external force, such an Order would continue indefinitely... until the end of the world.
But now.
An invasive alien species, Su Zhou, had arrived in this land.
The great Dragon gazed toward the distant gathering of Divine Beasts. He walked in the direction from which he had come, making no effort to conceal himself.
He wantonly unleashed his aura, and the very sky changed color.
A gale swept up water vapor, gathering into thick layers of rain clouds above the Wingless Great Dragon’s head. High-temperature Spiritual Power condensed on its body, channeling down to its feet and branding one burning footprint after another into the ground. Extraordinary Life forms require specific environments. Some Dragons live in the ozone layer, feeding on meteorites; others live in volcanoes, nesting in molten rock. These are the environments they need, without which they would weaken.
But truly powerful life does not adapt to the environment. It makes the environment adapt to it.
Summoning clouds and rain—his very movement brought forth a sky full of dark clouds and heavy rain.
RUMBLE—Flashes of Thunder Light lit up the sky. One could see a thick blanket of rain clouds forming and spreading, originating from the remains of the Tree of Life. Amidst the surging water vapor, howling gales, and roaring thunder, a scorching, calamitous pressure—the Dragon Aura’s Spiritual Pressure—radiated outward. All the Combat Species Spirit Beasts in its path scattered and fled in terror.
"It’s... it’s a Venerable Lord..."
"A Venerable Lord of the Scale Race... Why do I feel like he’s even stronger than His Majesty? Stronger than the Celestial Dragon Venerable Lord!?"
"No, we can’t get involved in a battle between Venerable Lords! Run, just run!"
The fear that the Divine Beasts had instilled in the Spirit Beasts generation after generation to curb rebellion was now once again proving effective. After all, if they hadn’t been so fearful and obedient, the Zhengguo Action Team would never have been able to obtain so much crucial intelligence from the very start, which had allowed them to choose the correct course of action.
Walking on, Su Zhou soon arrived at one of the plantations they had seen earlier.
