Chapter 808: Chapter 794: Trap
Puki Puki——
A neat row of Pukis marched down the main street of Mushroom City.
Inside Puki’s House, the Mushroom Transformer Evan was hugging his daughter Bianca goodbye.
This time, he followed the Third Fungi to Mushroom City, and after a day, he was going to depart with the army.
"Dad, you have to be careful!"
Faced with his daughter’s concern, Evan proudly displayed his Tentacle Blade: "Don’t worry, your dad is quite awesome!"
After bidding a reluctant farewell to his flushed-cheeked wife, Evan melted into the procession of Puki on the street.
Days later, Evan, who had been resurrected from the Underground City, couldn’t help but sheepishly rub his mushroom hat under the gazes of his mother and daughter.
...
Unlike the First and Second Fungi Corps, the Third Fungi was mainly composed of Mushroom Transformers, so they weren’t afraid of sacrifice and could send... out to battle freely.
After replenishing the local defense Puki of Mushroom City, Lin Jun dispatched the entire Third Fungi.
It was not to support Oath City; the waters were too deep there.
The target of the Third Fungi was those teams sent by the Demon King to spread havoc.
Not every enemy force was stationed by a prince like Darean.
Relying on the informational advantage of the Fungal Mat, the Third Fungi would uproot these slaughter squads one by one, indirectly aiding Oath City.
Lin Jun was not afraid of depletion; whether it was Puki or Mushroom Transformers, they could be continuously supplemented from the Underground City.
However, for the battlefield of Oath City, Lin Jun could do much less.
After the two Imperial Armies surrounded them, they drove Slimes to devour the Fungal Mat near Oath City, and even much of the underground network was damaged.
Now Lin Jun could only barely maintain vision over Oath City through a few deeply hidden fungal mycelium networks.
It was unrealistic to transport a large amount of Magic Power into the city through these few networks to burst Puki. Fortunately, the defenses of Oath City were still relatively strong, and the garrison, led by Alama and others, still maintained morale and seemed able to hold on for a long time.
The new defense line was nearly half-obliterated by the mist, but the remaining half was still operational.
Magic Power continuously pumped into Oath City from the nodal cities in the rear, and if the Empire wanted to cut this channel to maintain Oath City’s defense, they’d first have to conquer several tough obstacles.
Lin Jun’s plan was to capture Muling Castle before that, send the footage to the front of Oath City, and after the imperial soldiers witnessed the fall of the Royal Capital, hopefully, not much morale would remain.
By then, the Demon King would either acknowledge defeat and sneak into the shadows with a few isolated Dukes or set up a confrontation with those leftover troops against the entire United Kingdom.
Even if Oath City is truly lost, it would indeed be disastrous for humans, but not a significant issue for Lin Jun.
The news of the Empire’s forces at the city’s gate had long spread out.
The Dwarves, due to the residual effects of the spirit field, were still rearranging internally with no time to intervene, but the Elves had mobilized this time.
Eco led the Forest Patrol, riding moose, and had just crossed the Scarecrow Abyss, which had turned into a Puki farm, to support Oath City.
Further back, the Tree Men also mobilized, but they moved in the direction of the Empire.
Even if the Demon King captured Oath City, what he would acquire is merely an indigestible human territory.
Meanwhile, his stronghold Empire would be devoured by Lin Jun’s Fungal Mat!
If there really is any chance of a turnaround, it might be hidden within those landmarks the Empire refers to as "Coffins."
Lin Jun captured a few small Coffins from the sweeping troops.
Research revealed no souls stored inside, and those devoured souls seemed to have been transferred elsewhere by the runes on the Coffins.
Most likely, they ended up in the giant Coffin tightly guarded by the Empire’s army.
Of course, it wouldn’t be surprising if there were an even more deeply hidden ultimate Coffin.
Regardless, the Demon King collecting souls must have intentions, and if Oath City can be saved, it should be.
For this, Lin Jun urged the First Fungi Corps to hasten their marching speed slightly.
...
"All units in position, ahead is the last city before Muling Castle."
The full-screen voice of Sister Blood in his mind awakened Norris, who wiped the corner of his mouth and sat up straight inside Jida.
Beneath Jida’s reconnaissance Puki’s bottom, his perception spread out; Jida stayed on course, marching leisurely with the main troops.
A few other soldiers, also recently awakened, were climbing out of the moving Fat Otaku Puki’s belly.
The Puki Army’s march was such that you could sleep inside Jida or the Fat Otaku Puki without almost any delay in marching.
Jida’s back spewed tail flames, taking off from the ranks and landing on a high point beside the main force, followed closely by several subordinates piloting Jida, scouting ahead towards the city.
Norris advanced while recalling the intel about this city ahead.
As a city close to the Empire’s Capital, Muling Castle, it served more as a transportation hub for Northern Empire rather than a military fortress.
This meant the city did not possess a sturdy defense; even if the Empire planned everything when the mist had just landed to bolster defenses, the time wasn’t enough to turn it into a stronghold.
If he were the defender, he wouldn’t waste forces here but would concentrate all strength at Muling Castle.
Only a few old, weak, sick, and disabled would probably stay in the city to alert Muling Castle before it fell—Norris speculated.
However, when the city came into his reconnaissance range, Norris found his thoughts had been conservative.
In front of him was essentially an empty city.
Norris and the Jida squad circled halfway around the city’s perimeter. Using Sound Wave Detection Level 10, they couldn’t detect any movement inside.
Entering the city on a whim, they indeed found no one.
"The Empire really abandoned this place." Within the Fungal Network, Norris’s subordinates made similar judgments, "But ahead, a tough battle is likely waiting."
Norris was baffled; in his mind, they should have left a few sentry messengers.
Moreover, he discovered relatively fresh bloodstains within the city but found no bodies.
Just as he puzzled, a gasp suddenly sounded from his subordinate over the Fungal Network.
When Norris arrived, he saw one Jida’s legs already trapped in a shadow, being dragged deeper.
The other two Jidas nearby fired Mushroom Cannons and Tentacle Blades at the shadow, to no avail.
Norris watched the scene, finding it somewhat familiar.
"This is... a Shadow Worm?" Norris had seen this creature outside the Abyssal Laboratory.
Buzz——
He brandished his drill, directly drilling through the trapped Jida at the waist, pulling the operator’s upper body away, then ordered: "Let the lower half self-destruct!"
Thud——
A muffled sound came from within the shadow, and shortly, the shadow dispersed, leaving behind only a Shadow Worm killed by the shock.
Norris rolled up the worm’s body, confirming his suspicion.
"Why would there be an Abyss creature here?" He glanced around and suddenly became alert, "No, everyone pull out! It’s a trap..."
Before he finished speaking, a pitch-black shadow suddenly spread from the city center.
A sharp laugh echoed within the shadow: "I was about to give you a surprise... These worms’ abilities are useful, but they’re still too unruly! If only it’d be less painful!"
A huge beast claw stretched from the shadow, slamming down heavily behind the retreating Norris and others.
A gigantic creature was slowly crawling out from within that roiling darkness!
A dragon head hung low, a bear-like body as large as a mountain, a scorpion tail raised high, ragged wings dragging behind, with scales and fur, plates and bones haphazardly pieced together, like a living puzzle stitched together by some deranged handiwork.
And... the core at its chest glowed with a black light.
"Did they actually hide an Abyss Beast inside the city?!" Norris accelerated his retreat with his subordinates.
But soon, he discovered something even more hair-raising.
Atop the dragon head of the Abyss Beast, a half-demon whose upper body was already fused with the monster was laughing shrilly.
Her features were like springs, with shadows constantly gushing from her eye sockets, nostrils, ears, and mouth, falling below and expanding the darkness underfoot.
"Eeehahaha! You all will die!" Virelis screamed skyward, laughing as she controlled the Abyss Beast to charge towards the halted First Fungi!
