10 seconds.

That’s how the first match ended, could have been lesser, and no one was surprised. You can’t expect a student who’s among the weakest in Lightning Affinity class to last 1 minute or more against a SSS rank Lightning Affinity User.

Still, the arena felt heavier after it. Like everyone just remembered what kind of monster stood on that stage.

But let’s recap a little, shall we.

---

Kyle exhaled, electricity already crawling up his arms, his Lightning affinity was C Rank, not SSS like the teacher but it was his, he poured everything into it, the air around him buzzed, sparks jumping from his shoulders to his fists.

Across from him, Jace didn’t even take a stance, he just looked at him calmly, both hands at his sides, lightning coiling lazily around his neck like a pet, his eyes were half lidded, bored almost, like this was a warm up and not an Ascension Trial.

"Go," Jace said, quiet one word, but it rolled across the stage.

Kyle moved, he shot forward, lightning bursting from his feet, he was fast, faster than he’d ever been in class or his entire life.

His fist came in wreathed in white bolts, aimed straight for Jace’s chest, he poured his 100% into that first hit, no holding back, his heart was hammering so loud he could hear it in his ears.

Jace tilted his head, the punch missed by an inch, the shockwave behind it cracked the stage, spiderweb fractures racing out.

Kyle didn’t stop, he spun, elbow, knee, palm, every strike trailing lightning, he was a storm, 3 seconds in and he’d already thrown 12 hits, each one faster than the last, each one screaming for a reaction.

Jace blocked one, caught another, stepped through the rest like they were rain, his expression didn’t change, his own lightning barely flickered, like he was swatting flies, like he was walking through a drizzle.

"Not bad," Jace said, voice low, almost amused, almost proud.

At 5 seconds Kyle screamed, desperation clawing up his throat, he threw both arms up, then he slammed them down.

KRAKOOOM!!

A pillar of lightning dropped from the ceiling of the arena, straight for Jace’s head, his blessing. Heaven thunder bolt.

The whole crowd flinched, the light was blinding, people covered their eyes, Year 1s screamed, livestream chat exploded with emojis.

When it cleared, smoke curling, Jace was standing in the same spot, untouched, one hand raised, he’d caught the bolt, dispersed it, like it was nothing, like snuffing out a candle between two fingers.

Kyle was already out of breath, sweat dripping down his temples, his MP tanking. He gave his everything in that attack.

7 seconds, Teacher Jace moved, just one step and he was in front of Kyle instantly, his palm open, no lightning yet, just raw speed. He tapped Kyle’s chest, so gentle it looked fake, like a pat.

BOOM!

Kyle was gone, he flew across the stage, through the air, and slammed into the wall where the spectators are, the impact echoed.

9 seconds... silence!

10 seconds, the timer Dinged. Student 1 was out.

Kyle was on the ground, smoking, uniform torn, chest rising and falling, but he was alive, barely conscious, his Lightning fizzled out, his vision swimming, his body twitching from feedback.

Medics were already at work, bringing in stretchers, they bundled the smoking Kyle and put him on the stretcher, while taking him to the infirmary, his body jerking from residual electricity, one medic muttering "C-Rank, lasted 10 seconds, not bad."

"Contestant 2. Come up to the stage. I told you all, I won’t take this lightly," Jace voice echoed the silent Arena, cold and final, but there was a flicker under it, something like expectation.

The students at the stands, Year 2 students mostly, different Affinity classes were all on their phones, almost all, live streaming this battle, comments flooding in.

’10 SECONDS??’

’TEACHER JACE DIDN’T EVEN SWEAT’

’RIP KYLE’

Meanwhile, the Lightning Affinity students looked more determined than afraid, jaws set, fists clenched, some whispering mantras, others rolling their shoulders. They all wanted to surprise the teacher.

Lynx watched with interest, arms crossed, leaning on the railing, he knew the outcome already, he’d checked their stats, their mana pools, their blessings. None of it mattered against Jace unless you were built different.

"It’s your turn Princess," he said to Ava, his voice soft but firm, low enough only she could hear, "you’re going to do better than the rest of them here, just focus on surviving 8 minutes rather than winning, cause you’ll last longer if you focus on surviving."

Ava took his advice seriously, her chest tightened, heat blooming in her cheeks, she knew Lynx was really strong, he aced his previous trials with one punch, but she had no idea how he will do against the teacher. No one here does.

"Thanks, I’ll try my best," she said, nodding once, her voice steady.

Ava walked to the stage, back straight, every step echoing, her uniform pristine, her hair falling on her shoulders, lightning already dancing faintly at her fingertips.

The Year 1 students present there lost it, Ava Musk, their Goddess, Founder of Lynxcrushers, they were cheering her name loudly, some year 2 students joined them.

The students cheering knew she won’t win, but boosting her confidence will definitely increase her chances of lasting against the Teacher. And Her Father was a big fucking name. She was also popular on Instalite.

"Ava! Ava! Ava!" the chant started small, then grew.

The Lightning Affinity students were even more interested in this battle, their strongest student vs their teacher, the air buzzed with anticipation, with some leaning forward.

"Do you think she has a chance?" Eira asked Lynx, she was the second strongest, well excluding Lynx, cause no student here knew how strong his Lightning affinity was... only Ava has defeated her during combat class. Eira’s voice was casual but her eyes were sharp, watching Lynx, not Ava.

"She won’t win, that’s for sure, but if she focuses she has a better chance surviving than the rest of her peers," Lynx replied, his eyes still locked on Ava, unreadable.

Eira’s eyes shut, she and Ava were big rivals in class, they’d traded first place back and forth for 2 years, so hearing she has a better chance than her stung her a bit, a flicker of irritation crossed her face, she covered it with a smile.

"What about you?" Eira pressed, turning fully to him.

Lynx smiled, slow and dangerous, the kind of smile that made girls forget their names, "Let’s wait for the fight now, shall we, no spoilers."

Eira pulled his arm, pouting, "You’re no fun at all," then she leaned in and whispered to his ears, her breath hot, her lips almost brushing skin, "Except you fuck real well, now I’m afraid that other guys won’t satisfy me, you have to take responsibility."

Lynx held her waist, fingers firm, his expression didn’t change but his eyes darkened.

"Although our first interaction wasn’t good at all, but you’re mine now."

Eira smiled, wide and pleased, she melted into his side, possessive.

From the spectator seats, Emily saw it all, every touch, every whisper.

"Did you see that, it’s official, they’ve done way more than kissing or whispering to each other," Emily watched Lynx and Eira display, her stomach twisting, her nails digging into the armrest. "I wanted to take this slow, but seeing this, my poor heart is shattering into pieces, that fucking bitch."

She turned to Kira, her voice sharp and venomous, "That bitch will steal our—"

Her words died in her throat, the degree around them had gotten slightly higher, heat radiating off Kira in waves, some students shifted uncomfortably at this sudden warmth, sweat beading.

"Kira?" Emily whispered, worried.

Kira’s eyes were red, in her head she was muttering "no no," her nails digging into her palms hard enough to draw blood, her chest rising and falling too fast.

Then she spoke, voice shaking, barely above a whisper but it cut, "I was supposed to be his first, we were supposed to be each other’s first, I’ll kill that fucking bitch."

She stood up unconsciously, the air around her rippling, chairs scraping, when she felt Emily’s hands around her, pulling her back down. "Breathe Kira, breathe," Emily said, urgent.

Kira realized she lost control over her emotions and she slightly relaxed, the air went back to its normal state, the temperature dropping, she sat down, ashamed, hiding her face.

"I’m so sorry that happened, I didn’t know what came over me, I just didn’t like seeing that girl clinging to Lynx, and your words, they seemed to be true, it just ignited something in me, I—"

"Kira," Emily said gently, thumb rubbing circles on her hand.

Kira turned to meet Emily’s eyes. "I get it, you’re jealous, so am I, but because you see Lynx with other ladies doesn’t mean you should fight or kill them... how are you even sure you’re supposed to be Lynx’s first?"

"Lynx was sick for 6 years," Kira said, the words spilling out, "he couldn’t talk, move, see or breathe well, almost dead, he was 13 when it came over him, now he’s 18, a late blessed. His hair, eyes, talks, are different from the Lynx I remembered."

Emily listened, it was her first time hearing about Lynx’s past after all, she was also infatuated with Lynx at first, but lately it was turning into something more than infatuation, something she didn’t have a name for yet... or she knew already.

"So according to all that, he was supposed to be a virgin?" Emily asked carefully.

"Yes Emily, or was a kid of 10-13 year old supposed to have sex?" Kira shot back.

"I guess you’re right," Emily sighed.

"Look, I know this is wrong, me and Lynx are cousins," she looked over at Lynx, her expression softening.

"but I can’t deny this, I hated his guts at first, when my mom’s attention was entirely on Lynx, when everyone fussed over the sick kid, but now, all that hate has turned into something else, something stronger, something I can’t control."

Emily intertwined her fingers with Kira’s, squeezing, grounding her. "I understand you" then she turned to the stage. "I mean look at him, even if you were his sister or enemy, it will be hard not to look at that face once and not feel attracted to him, he’s unfair like that."

Kira laughed, watery but real, the tension breaking, "I guess you’re right, we’re both screwed."

The two girls sat there, hands linked, watching the stage while their hearts were a mess.

...

Ava stepped on the stage, her eyes left Eira and Lynx, she noticed their little interaction, her hands turned into fists, jealousy burning hot in her chest. "That stupid girl,"

Teacher Jace restarted the time, the red 10:00 glowing above them, he observed Ava, his best and strongest student, pride flickering under the sternness.

"Ava, time to put all that teaching and training into good use, you’ve always been my best student, don’t disappoint me."

Ava met his eyes, her own lighting up, lightning already sparking at her fingertips, her gaze sharp and determined, a small smile on her lips.

"Oh I won’t teacher,"
