Lynx and Ava walked in silence for some minutes, the only sound between them was the echo of their shoes on the floor, and the distant roar of the arena bleeding through the walls.

Lynx was patiently waiting for Ava to tell him the full story between her feud with Emily. His hands stayed in his pockets, but he didn’t push. He could feel her glancing at him, then looking away, like she was deciding how much to bleed out loud.

Ava inhaled... then exhaled, a long shaky breath. "Eira’s father worked for my dad. He’s not a Blessed, neither is my dad, but my dad is literally one of the persons who runs this empire, financially."

"What does your dad do?" Lynx really wanted to know. His voice came out even, but his eyes flicked to her. He couldn’t make research about her dad, cause he’s always busy.

Either he got a fight coming up or he’s fucking his girl’s. And now, around 4-5 pm he has to get to the Earth Affinity arena for their ascension trials. He wasn’t tired though, Primordial Healing made his life a hundred percent easier.

He saw the Year 2 Earth Affinity teacher online and dude’s a big guy. Shoulders like stone, gravity bending around him even through a screen. Pretty much to say the Earth Affinity Ascension trials will be interesting to him. But this, right now, was more interesting.

"Y-you don’t know my dad? O-or what he does?" Ava stuttered. She stopped mid step, eyes wide, like he’d just said he didn’t know water. She couldn’t believe it. Not one bit.

Everyone in this Aether Empire has heard about her Dad. The Musk name rings bells. It’s on skyscrapers, on holo ads, in every business feed.

"I’m I supposed to know him?" Lynx causally said. Hands still on his pocket as he walked, not breaking stride.

He knew they are rich. Even in his past life on Earth the Musk name rings bells too, richest man and all that. But this isn’t Earth, and her dad isn’t even a Blessed. Why must his name ring bells here, in a world ruled by Blessed, where power was measured in affinities, not credits.

Ava now believed he really doesn’t know her dad. She was so shocked she stopped walking for some seconds, just standing there, staring at him like he was speaking another language.

Lynx saw her pause and turned to her, brows pulling together. "What’s up with you, princess? Is your dad related to the ’Goddess Shiva’ or what." He said it teasing, but his eyes were searching hers.

"What the actual fuck. My number 1 crush. The most popular guy in Aether Academy. The reason Lynxcrushers was made. Actually doesn’t know Alon Fucking Musk." Her voice cracked on the last word, half disbelief, half frustration.

"Your dad’s name is Alon Musk?" ’That’s a coincidence’. Lynx thought, ’His name’s like Elon Musk, or is he Elon Musk but from another universe? That can’t be right?’ Lynx’s brain tried to file it away, but nothing clicked.

Ava saw his thinking expression and finally thought the name has rung some bells in his head. She stepped closer, hope flickering, "what, you know him now?"

"No, but stop swearing," he said, and his voice dropped. "It’s contradicting your cute face and innocent look. Now will you tell me who he is, or I’ll just go see Eira straight."

He got no reaction from her. Just her mouth opening and closing. So he started walking again.

Ava who was speechless. ’Wait, he finds me cute.’ The thought hit her out of nowhere and her cheeks were red, hot. She saw him leaving and hurriedly ran after him, her heart thudding, "wait! wait!! wait!! I’ll tell you, and I’ll explain why Emily hates me."

"Good, cause Eira needs my attention right now."

"Can you please stop mentioning other girls when we are alone." The words came out sharper than she meant, and she immediately regretted them.

Lynx just laughed, low, "jealous?"

Ava didn’t answer.

"So... My dad, Alon Musk, is the owner of Quesla." She waited to see his reaction, holding her breath, but got none. His face didn’t change.

"What? Is there something on my face."

"No," Ava’s voice rose, disbelief turning to something like anger. "You don’t fucking know my dad for real. You are serious about you not knowing the most influential human on this empire, have you been living in a cave or what?"

Cave?

That word hit him like a fist to the gut.

Cave? That triggered something. His old memories. The one from Earth. When he was that Loser Jack. That fucking masturbator, that failure. People called him a caveman. The world and people treated him like trash, people said he came from a cave, said he smelled like one, looked like one, lived like one.

His chest tightened. He blinked the sad memories away and turned to face Ava. Her beautiful face wasn’t also doing him any good. Because looking at her, soft and rich and alive, made him remember those fucking women on Earth who spat on him.

He remembered the first girl he asked out. She was beautiful by Earth standards, very beautiful. Long dark hair, a laugh through his phone that made his shitty apartment feel less empty.

They met online, through some dating app. They got along. She made him happy. She made his hellish life a bit comfortable. For a few weeks, his phone lighting up with her messages was the only reason he got out of bed.

He requested for them to meet, wanted to tell her something important. That he liked her. She was thrilled, at least online. She also can’t wait to see how he looks, cause he’s always avoiding video calls, and he didn’t upload any of his photo on his profile. He told himself it was privacy. It was shame.

He was nervous. God, he was nervous. He shaved, bathed at least twice, used his savings to get a decent cloth. Not new. Just decent. Just enough to look from dead to at least he tried. He practiced what to say in the mirror until his voice stopped shaking.

They met eventually, at a coffee shop with too much light. She was even more prettier in real life. He walked up to her and introduced himself, "Hi, I’m Jack."

She nearly puked when she saw him.

His pale sickly skin. His messy black hair. His dead eyes. The hoodie that didn’t fit. She took one look and her smile died.

She called him a fucking caveman, loud enough for the next table to hear. Then she shoved a few hundred bucks on his face, crumpled bills, "Here, go treat yourself and fuck yourself, and never get on dating apps. You’re wasting people’s time."

That left a permanent damage on his soul. A crack that never closed. He tried on a few more girls after that. Hoping it was a mistake. About three spat on him. One threw her drink. His soul was damaged, piece by piece. Then he died. Pitifully.

Ava saw him thinking, saw all his expressions change. The way his jaw locked, the way his eyes went distant, cold. "U-uhm, Lynx? Something wrong?"

"Well," Lynx said, and his voice was quiet, scraped raw. "You have no idea. Let’s see. Afflicted by a deadly disease since I was 13. Which made me useless and dead. Died. ’Miraculous’ woke up as a Blessed on my 18th birthday. Came to this Academy after a week when I woke up. Left my lovely Aunt."

He took a breath

.

"When I came here to this academy, I was so weak. Everyone thought, ’oh he’s the guy with multiple affinities so he got to be strong... blah...’ but no. I was fucking weak, couldn’t even use my affinities. I isolated myself for a month or year in hell, training until I couldn’t stand, and came back here stronger than ever."

Then he turned to her again, and his eyes were hard now, blue and silver like steel. "So you’re right. I’ve been living in a ’cave’. You know what? I don’t care about your damn dad. He could go fuck himself. Not cause he’s some rich guy means everyone’s gotta know him? I thought you weren’t a spoiled princess... but you’re just like your asshole brother."

Lynx walked away. Fast. His fists clenched in his pockets, his breathing uneven. Leaving Ava speechless standing there.

He didn’t meant to say all that. But that ’cave’ word triggered that damaged soul in him.

Ava was in disbelief. Her heart was pounding, her face burning. Kira and Eira who were nearby, heard part of it.

They hurried and rushed after him, not glancing at Ava. They could feel she said something that must have pissed him off. Their footsteps echoed past her.

Ava watched the two ladies run past her. She was still standing there thinking about what Lynx said. The word ’cave’ ringing in her ears. The word ’spoiled’ cutting.

Her dad literally provides anything for her and Peter. Peter especially. He’s the golden child. The first Blessed of their family. The one their dad brags about at dinners.

Not that he neglected her in any way. He bought her things. He paid for her training. But he just gave Peter more attention. More time. He spoiled both of them rotten too.

Their mom doesn’t even care. Her mom’s just there spending her dad’s money endlessly. Going to red carpet. Attending Blessed events where normal humans won’t dare to go. Smiling for cameras while never caring about her daughter.

She worked too. Lynx is wrong. He’s got to be wrong. He dosent know her.

She worked hard. Although she might be spoiled, she was born into endless wealth. Into a prestigious family who looked down on poor people. But she always believed she’s not like her parents or her brother.

She worked hard. Trained hard. Bruised knuckles, torn muscles, sleepless nights. To be recognized by her father. To hear him say yes, you are important to this family as Peter is.

It paid off. Now her father acknowledges her. He claps when she wins. He asks about her matches. Also Peter loves her dearly.

Lynx has to be wrong.

She stood there thinking. Then she followed Lynx. Her steps were slow at first, then faster, because she wasn’t going to let that be the last thing said between them.
