It was evening now. The infirmary lights had dimmed to that soft, gold white glow they used for recovery rooms.
Lira stirred and then she woke up slowly.
Her eyes fluttered open, and for a second she just stared at the ceiling, confused, because nothing hurt. Not her ribs, not her legs, not even the place where Matthew’s drill had caught her.
She lifted her hand, flexed her fingers, no single pain, she felt really good, back to new.
She sat up, and the sheet slid off her. "Healed already?" she whispered to herself. She thought it would take days. "Never underestimate the power of this Academy Healers," she muttered.
The door clicked open, and then two sets of footsteps.
Lira looked up.
Kira came in first, hair tied up but messy, sweat drying on her temples, her Deep Blue uniform sticking to her back. She was bouncing on the balls of her feet like she’d just run 10 laps.
Emily followed, but she was slower. Her jacket was over her shoulder, her hair was pulled back, and there was a thin line of soot on her cheek she hadn’t bothered to wipe.
Lira blinked at them. "Where were you guys coming from, sweating like this?"
"Training," Kira said, grinning the second she saw Lira awake. "We have that match tomorrow, the 50th spot, we came straight here because we knew you’d be healed by this time."
"Yeah," Emily said, dropping into the chair beside the bed. She leaned back, arms crossed, but her eyes were soft. "Had to get a few rounds in."
Lira nodded, then swung her legs off the bed. Her feet hit the floor, slow and steady. No wobble and she felt no pain.
"I’m good," she said, almost surprised. "Fully healed and everything. I can feel my affinity coursing through my veins." Her voice came out softly, as she slowly clenched her beautiful fingers.
Kira walked around her in a circle, inspecting her like she was a weapon. "Yep, you’re good as new, while Matthew is still laying down there. Damn Lira, I didn’t know you’re this strong. Well let’s head back, I’m sticky."
Lira’s cheeks went pink immediately as she followed them. She ducked her head, fingers twisting in the hem of her shirt. "I-I’ve just been training, when no one’s watching."
Emily walked too, and bumped Lira’s shoulder with hers. "Yeah, me too," she said. Her voice was laced with real warmth. "You were so cool back there. The flip, the feint, how you countered his attacks, i watched it on replay, like three times."
Lira muttered, her voice barely audible. "Thanks guys."
Kira threw her arms out. "Don’t ’thanks guys’ me, that was insane. I’d love spar with you someday, it would be fun. Let’s see who comes out on top. I didn’t know I had a strong roommate."
"You don’t talk to me." Lira pouted.
Kira shrugged, "Fairs, but now I do. And I’m itching for a spar with you."
Emily groaned, dragging a hand down her face. "Kira, you’re always looking for a fight."
"What?" Kira stopped walking and looked genuinely offended. "That’s what we’re supposed to do, fight, master your affinity, get strong, that’s literally why we’re in AETHER Blessed Academy."
She poked Emily’s arm. "Besides, how can you keep up as Lynx woman if you’re weak? You don’t wanna be the type that he’ll save everytime, right? Like a damsel in distress."
Emily stopped, and for a second her cool mask slipped. She looked down, then back up, and nodded once. "That’s true," she said quietly. "I don’t."
Then she looked at Kira and rolled her eyes. "But you’re obsessed with it. Obsessed with fighting."
"Not obsessed," Kira said, but she was grinning like she knew she was. "I’m Motivated. It’s a big Big difference."
Lira hadn’t said anything through all of that. She was just walking between them, hands in her pockets, looking at the floor.
But now she spoke, soft, almost to herself.
"It will be nice for Lynx to save me everytime," she said.
Both of them turned.
Lira didn’t notice. She kept walking, voice getting a little steadier, a little dreamier.
"Me and him, his strong hands lifting me up, his blue and silver colored eyes staring at me with love, his handsome face, all worried, like ’Lira are you okay’ and then he’d carry me, and I’d be, I’d be—"
"Okay okay Lira we get it," Emily cut in fast, and her face was red now. She grabbed Lira’s wrist and tugged her forward. "Now walk faster."
Kira was already losing it, doubling over with laughter. "No, no, let her finish, this is good."
"I wasn’t— I didn’t mean—" Lira went scarlet and covered her face with both hands. "Forget it, please forget I said anything!"
Emily was smiling even if she was trying to hide it. "Come on, before you give Kira more ideas."
They walked out of the infirmary like that, bickering, laughing, the evening air cool on their skin.
They went to Kira’s and Lira’s room, in the Year 2 girls building. The room was big enough for 5 people to live in, and they will be very comfortable. No jammed space or anything like that.
Lira collapsed on the couch with a sigh.
"Home."

Back at Amira’s House
The house was quiet.
Amira stood by the door, her car keys in one hand, her phone in the other. Her expression was tight.
"Kayla had an emergency at Velbroth," she said, looking at Lynx on the couch. "I need to go, I’ll be back in a couple of min."
Lynx looked up from the TV. "Is it trouble?"
"I got this," Amira said, and she was already moving. "Stay here, don’t burn the place down."
The door closed, her car tires hissed, and then it was just him.
Now it’s been two minutes since she left.
Lynx flopped back on the couch and grabbed his phone.
Instalite was open. He was scrolling, thumb moving without thinking.
A clip of an AETHER student doing a wind dash through rings. A live clip of a girl from AETHER Academy doing some vlog, she had lots of followers and she’s very gorgeous. He has never seen her before.
Then in another clip a group of normal human girls in support uniforms, short skirts, laughing while they walked through their academy hall. One of them turned and waved at the camera, and Lynx actually paused.
"Every single one of them is beautiful," he thought. He hardly sees a not good looking woman in this world, in fact he hadn’t see one since he came her. And these normal human girls in their uniforms, it was killing him.
He kept scrolling, just enjoying the videos, just academy life and normal people.
Then his phone buzzed.
A new message.
Isabel. He chatted her some seconds ago.
He tapped it open, and his eyebrows went up immediately.
First was a picture. She was in a towel, hair wet and dripping down her shoulders, smiling at the camera like she knew exactly what she was doing.
Her skin was glowing from the shower, and the towel barely stayed up.
Lynx stared at it. "Damn," he muttered under his breath, almost licking the screen by accident. She was too hot.
Next was a video. 4 seconds. Same towel, but she spun once, then blew a kiss right at the camera. The caption said ’miss you’
Lynx ran a hand through his hair and typed back, ’wish I could teleport next to you, I miss you too my lovely Aunt’
Ding!
He saw a new message from Ava.
47 unread messages from Ava.
He stared at them.
After "caveman." After he walked away. She’d been texting every day since.
"You can talk to her, you know," Nyx’s voice came, soft in his head. The necklace at his neck pulsed once. "She’s a good girl. Whatever happened was in the past, this is present. Focus on the present and the future, not the past.
Lynx thought about it while she continued. "By the way she’s still a kid, who receives everything she wants in life. You can’t expect her to not act like that. You’re probably the first person she’s seen that doesn’t know her dad’s name or business."
"She’s 19," Lynx said out loud. "Older than me. Not a kid."
He paused, then remembered who he was talking to. "Yeah, I take that back."
Nyx laughed in his head, her voice sweet and light as he remembered.
The phone rang in his hand.
Ava was calling.
He answered after two rings, and her voice all came out at once, fast and shaky and running over itself.
"Lynx, oh my god, okay, so I’ve been thinking nonstop, and I know you’re probably mad, and I get it, I really do, but I didn’t mean the cave thing like that, I swear I didn’t, and I just, I wasn’t thinking, and then you left, and I stood there, and I’ve sent you fifty messages because I didn’t know what else to do, and I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, and the academy year 2 group chat is blowing up about Lira and I’m proud of her but I’m also, I miss you, I don’t want us to be like this, please don’t be mad at me—"
"Breath, Ava," Lynx said, cutting in gently.
Her voice was breaking at the end. He could hear her sniffing. She stopped. There was a shaky inhale on the other end.
"I should be sorry," Lynx said. "I shouldn’t have snapped like that. It triggered some really bad memories, and I lashed out, and that was wrong. I’m deeply sorry. When I’m back at the academy I’ll make it up to you. Take you on a date. Or kiss you again. Or anything you want."
There was a sniff. "You really mean that?"
"Yeah, I do," Lynx said. "Look. I like you, Ava. You’re cool and all. And you’re the president of my fan page even when I just registered to the academy. You made it. Some folks and Blessed of the AETHER Empire are in the page you created for me. We shouldn’t be not talking."
Ava laughed, wet. "Almost all of them are girls. They’re mostly there because of your handsome face, really nice voice, and because you’re strong."
Lynx laughed too. "Fair."
He kept apologizing, and they talked, about Lira’s fight, about how she is, about nothing.
Then Lynx’s voice dropped.
"I know what happened with you and Emily," he said.
Ava went quiet.
"I know it’s your dad’s fault," he continued. "Both your dads don’t agree, and you and her got caught in the middle. But hey. Emily is my girl now. She’s important to me. I want you guys to be cool."
"I’m trying, Lynx," Ava whispered. "But she hates me, like, really deep bone hates me. And I don’t blame her, cause I’d hate me too if I were her."
"It’s your dad’s fault, not yours," Lynx said firmly. "And don’t worry, I’ll get your dad’s talking again soon."
Ava laughed, but it was tired. "Only the goddess could do that."
"Watch me," Lynx said.
His tablet on the coffee table lit up. ’Incoming: Group Video Call’... more like Amira’s tablet, he logged in his account he uses her tablet.
"Yep," Lynx said. "They’re calling right now. I’ll add you to the group call. And Eira too, I texted her earlier."
"Wait Lynx, no, wait, I’m not ready, wait—"
He added her anyway as he ended the call with her. Then heard tires screeching outside.
"Amira must be back," he thought.
He picked up the group call, and the screen filled with excited faces.
Emily was in Kira’s massive bed, both hair was wet and dripping with water, they newly bathed.
Ava covered her face with one hand. Eira was sipping on something red... blood?
Then a scream tore through the speaker.
