Chapter 60: Double the Spring Breeze

Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Double the Spring Breeze

In a dense, snowy forest, two people and a snake were in a standoff.

Shen Yunjiao suddenly pulled the meat of a Black and White Giant Bear from her Storage Bag. It was over two hundred pounds, and with a great heave, she threw it in front of the ink-green giant snake. Most Demon Beasts hunted to fill their bellies, so tossing out the meat was an attempt to give both sides a way out.

The Demon Beast would eat its fill and leave, and they would be free from danger. A simple matter of diplomacy.

But the ink-green giant snake didn’t even glance at the Demon Beast meat. A cold killing intent glinted in its fiery red eyes. It wasn’t hungry; it was simply reveling in the joy of the hunt, savoring the struggles of its prey before death, enjoying their weak resistance and pitiful cries.

"Negotiations failed," Shen Yunjiao said.

"Then I guess we have to fight," Zhao Zuo said, turning to Shen Yunjiao, his expression grave.

Shen Yunjiao puffed out her chest, gave Zhao Zuo a slight nod, and held up two fingers.

"Okay." Zhao Zuo took a pitch-black Antidote Pill from his Storage Bag and swallowed it. Tactic Number Two centered on Shen Yunjiao and was called "Double Spring Breeze." Since Shen Yunjiao was solely responsible for making Spring Breeze, she automatically received twenty percent of the profits whenever this tactic was used to successfully hunt a Demon Beast.

The ink-green giant snake might have an extremely high resistance to other types of poison, but it absolutely could not withstand the effects of Spring Breeze. After all, as a serpentine creature, some of its basic instincts were impossible to change.

SMASH!

Shen Yunjiao took out a large porcelain bottle and threw it before the Demon Beast. Then, she began to close in with practiced coordination, her long sword swinging and spreading fierce flames. The ink-green giant snake didn’t dodge. Its scales suddenly bristled before locking tightly together, as if recalibrating its defenses.

The edge of her blade struck the scales, clashing like steel on steel and sending sparks flying, illuminating the surrounding darkness. Yet the scales remained unbroken; only a few drops of blood oozed from the gaps between them.

The two exchanged a knowing glance. This test proved that the Defense Power of the Demon Beast’s scales was more terrifying than they had imagined. Perhaps only the sharpness of the Sky-Breaking Saber could breach its defenses and inflict any real damage. Fortunately, the creature was enormous... no matter how nimble it was, there were bound to be places it couldn’t protect.

Zhao Zuo took a deep breath, gripped his Black Flame Saber, and charged the giant snake. He swung the saber with brute force, smashing it violently against the center of the creature’s body. Unfortunately, it still failed to penetrate its defenses. The ink-green giant snake’s eyes glowed like lanterns as it opened its cavernous maw and abruptly spat a fan-shaped wave of flames.

As the orange-red flames descended, Zhao Zuo immediately retreated, narrowly dodging the column of fire. The inferno landed on the ground, burning without end. The area was gradually becoming a sea of fire, completely cutting off the battlefield from the rest of the dense forest.

The giant snake loomed over the pair, its gaze terrifyingly cold and sinister.

The air above the sea of fire shimmered and distorted. The snow under their feet was melting rapidly. The ink-green giant snake continued to spew columns of orange-red fire, making it impossible for Zhao Zuo and Shen Yunjiao to get close enough to attack.

Amid the firelight, Zhao Zuo waved his hand, sending the Sky-Breaking Saber flying toward the giant snake in an attack.

BAM!

A bloody, bowl-sized hole instantly burst open on the ink-green giant snake’s body. Scalding blood streamed from the wound. Instantly enraged, the snake let out a deafening roar like a dragon’s cry. It slithered rapidly through the sea of fire, brazenly launching a ferocious assault as its massive maw continued to spit flames.

It coiled and twisted ceaselessly, leaving only an inky afterimage as it moved. Its body slammed into Shen Yunjiao like a runaway train. Though Shen Yunjiao managed to defend with a Vajra Talisman in the nick of time, she was still sent flying from the heavy blow. The giant snake wasn’t having an easy time either... every time Zhao Zuo activated the Sky-Breaking Saber, he managed to leave a new wound on its body.

Meanwhile, as Shen Yunjiao dodged and weaved through the attacks, she continued to toss out large porcelain bottles. As time passed, the ink-green giant snake’s state grew strange... it would occasionally let out a mournful cry, only to appear extremely excited moments later. Its eyes flickered, alternating between clarity and a hazy confusion.

In the snake’s eyes, the surrounding gnarled, ancient trees suddenly seemed kind and gentle. Just as it was about to abandon the fight in favor of a romantic entanglement, a new wave of attacks descended.

The sharp pain restored some of its clarity. Its half-meter-thick tail smashed down from above like a battle-axe, piercing through layers of golden barriers, instantly shattering the Vajra Talisman’s defense, and landing heavily upon Shen Yunjiao.

Shen Yunjiao’s expression turned grim. She hastily took out some Healing Medicine and swallowed it.

The next second, the ink-green giant snake coiled up, its power contained within. From a distance, it resembled a giant millstone. It used its massive body to divide the battlefield, ignoring Shen Yunjiao as she swung her sword at it.

A deep blue scale on the giant snake’s forehead began to glow faintly in the night, and it gently exhaled a puff of white mist toward Zhao Zuo.

Unable to dodge in time, Zhao Zuo’s left leg was touched by a wisp of the white mist. He immediately felt a bone-deep chill invade his body and shivered involuntarily. By the time he reacted, the snake’s gaping maw was already upon him.

At the critical moment, Zhao Zuo mobilized the Mana within his body to counteract the invading cold. Simultaneously, he threw a Qi and Blood Pill and a Spirit Revitalizing Pill into his mouth and swallowed. As for the imminent attack... the Golden Light Mirror on his chest abruptly shot out, positioning itself in front of the gaping maw.

With a flick of his wrist, Zhao Zuo tossed a large porcelain bottle into the ink-green giant snake’s mouth and beat a hasty retreat. ’Maybe I should develop my own special combat school later,’ he thought. ’The Spring Breeze Style...’

BOOM.

The previously infallible Golden Light Mirror was sent flying. The ink-green giant snake straightened its upper body, the section behind its head instantly swelling to become even thicker. It opened its mouth and spat out an icy blue mist, enveloping the tumbling mirror.

THUD.

A few seconds later, a huge block of ice crashed to the ground. Zhao Zuo’s connection with the Golden Light Mirror was instantly severed.

"Attack its wounds!" Zhao Zuo yelled to Shen Yunjiao.

"I know!" Shen Yunjiao seized an opportunity, stabbing her long sword into one of the wounds the Sky-Breaking Saber had just made. But the ink-green giant snake seemed to have made up its mind about something; it ignored her attack completely and pursued Zhao Zuo with its full strength.

For a while, all Zhao Zuo could do was flee in disarray, occasionally using the Sky-Breaking Saber to counter-attack.

The tiny Magical Artifact contained the ultimate cutting power of the Wind Attribute, and its attacks were incredibly swift. Furthermore, the giant snake’s eyes now held a dazed confusion mixed with its rage, and its evasive speed was a far cry from what it had been at its peak.

Like a cunning Hunter, Zhao Zuo constantly maintained the perfect distance.

In a daze, the ink-green giant snake let out a dragon-like roar and abruptly released an icy mist from its body. It rode the wind and snow... its speed suddenly skyrocketing. When it reappeared, it was already lunging down at Zhao Zuo, jaws wide to swallow him.

The distance between them was less than three meters. Zhao Zuo could clearly smell the foul odor coming from the snake’s mouth. At the critical moment, he summoned all his strength and hurled his Black Flame Saber into the ink-green giant snake’s mouth, while the Sky-Breaking Saber shot toward its eyes.

At the same time, a thick tail whipped out from the icy mist and violently struck Zhao Zuo in the back. The enormous force of the blow made him feel like his organs were being rearranged, and the world blurred before his eyes. He was sent flying nearly twenty meters by the impact.

Zhao Zuo slammed into the ground like a sack of broken bones. He rolled several times before scrambling wretchedly to his feet. Wiping the blood from his face, he looked worriedly toward the center of the battlefield.
