Chapter 61: Cooperating to Slay the DemonChapter 61: Chapter 61: Cooperating to Slay the Demon
SQUELCH.
The Sky-Breaking Saber struck the giant snake’s left eye, which shone like a lantern. The massive beast’s body went rigid, and blood gushed from the wound. Shen Yunjiao would never miss such an opportunity. She scrambled onto the giant, dark-green snake’s body and plunged her longsword into the gash the Sky-Breaking Saber had made.
The giant snake thrashed wildly. Pushing off with her legs, Shen Yunjiao dropped like a falling leaf. As she fell, her left hand flung a second Willow Leaf Dart at the snake’s right eye. Her hands wove a seal in mid-air, and a single word escaped her lips.
"Burst!"
Countless metallic shards blossomed outwards like petals before showering down like meteors.
SQUELCH.
The giant, dark-green snake had been grievously wounded twice in quick succession. But Demon Beasts possess incredible Life Force; even with such injuries, it could still move. It picked a random direction and began to flee for its life. Covered in wounds, its speed was inevitably slower.
"After it!" Shen Yunjiao coughed, spitting out a mouthful of blood. Her face grew even paler.
Both had been severely injured in the fight, but they had to give chase. Zhao Zuo needed to retrieve his Sky-Breaking Saber, and Shen Yunjiao needed to get back her Black Flame Saber.
"Right."
The two hastily dressed their wounds as they ran. Their internal injuries were severe, however, and their combat strength was somewhat compromised. They could only track it with extreme caution, searching for any sign.
In the biting wind and swirling snow, the trail of blood was not hard to follow.
After about half an hour, they found that the blood trail suddenly ended.
"It must still be nearby." Zhao Zuo could still vaguely sense the Sky-Breaking Saber. He was certain the Demon Beast wasn’t far, but he felt its presence was being obscured by something, making the connection faint and indistinct.
Shen Yunjiao stood still and closed her eyes, quietly sensing her surroundings. Weaving a seal sign, she produced a special Talisman and ignited it with her Mana. As the talisman paper rapidly burned to ash, Shen Yunjiao’s eyes snapped open, and she took several steps forward.
She formed another seal sign. The snowdrift quickly parted. After ten or so seconds, a dark, deep cavern nearly two meters in diameter was revealed beneath the snow.
’This must be the Demon Beast’s lair.’
Zhao Zuo took the lead, holding his Golden Light Mirror and braced for a surprise attack from the Demon Beast. Shen Yunjiao followed close behind. They advanced slowly, remaining on high alert.
Every slight breath and footstep seemed magnified, echoing endlessly through the empty cavern and creating the unnerving illusion that they were being followed.
After a moment’s thought, Zhao Zuo still felt uneasy. He slapped a few more Vajra Talismans onto his body. Only then did he feel a measure of inner calm, and his steps became steadier.
The cavern was dark, but the air circulated freely. Every few meters, they saw pools of viscous blood, now coagulated and frozen solid. ’It’s seriously wounded... so much so that it can’t even heal its own injuries.’
After about three minutes, the tunnel opened into a huge cavern nearly a hundred square meters in area. It looked like a den dug by an Earth Escape Monster Beast that this Demon Snake had since claimed.
In the center of the vast cavern, the giant, dark-green snake lay coiled, its head tucked beneath its body. The ground around it was stained red with blood, and its heartbeat was incredibly faint.
Shen Yunjiao stepped forward and beheaded the giant snake with her longsword.
The two looked at each other. Though covered in wounds, their smiles were bright. A Demon Beast of this size had to weigh at least six tons. Its scales and bones could be used as materials for Artifact Refining, while its gallbladder and heart were powerful tonics. All told, the parts could sell for at least a thousand Spirit Stones.
While it wasn’t enough to make him rich overnight, it was enough for Zhao Zuo to buy a few more Magical Artifacts to aid his Cultivation.
"COUGH, COUGH." Zhao Zuo coughed, and blood trickled through the fingers covering his mouth. He quickly took a Healing Elixir from his Storage Bag and swallowed it. He felt wisps of Purifying Spirit Qi spread from his abdomen, rapidly mending the sources of stinging pain inside him. The color returned to his face slightly.
Shen Yunjiao turned and walked toward the tunnel entrance.
"I’m going to seal the entrance for now. We should head back once our injuries have improved."
After the giant, dark-green snake lost its Vitality, its Scale Armor, while still hard, could no longer withstand the sharpness of a Middle Grade Magical Artifact. Shen Yunjiao used her longsword to dismember the beast.
The two retrieved their Magical Artifacts as planned, and Zhao Zuo took the snake’s heart and gallbladder.
After the dismemberment, the metallic stench of blood in the cavern grew even stronger. Even using a Cleaning Talisman did little to alleviate the foul odor.
This was no time to dwell on it, however. They found a relatively clean spot, sat down, swallowed another Healing Elixir, and closed their eyes to meditate, circulating their Mana to mend their injuries.
The cavern was pitch-black without a light source. Then, Shen Yunjiao took a crystal lamp from her Storage Bag, which, powered by a Spirit Stone, completely illuminated their surroundings.
Shen Yunjiao first set several traps in the tunnel and affixed a few warning Talismans. Only then, reassured, did she return to the main cavern, swallow a Healing Elixir, and close her eyes to meditate.
She glanced at Zhao Zuo in the other corner. ’I really can’t understand his trust in me. He just sat down to meditate without any precautions. Isn’t he worried at all that I might attack him?’
’It’s a strange feeling, to have someone trust me like family.’
Zhao Zuo, meditating with his eyes closed, was naturally unaware of Shen Yunjiao’s thoughts. He was more concerned with the extent of his own injuries.
’My ribs feel broken, and my organs are damaged, too. Yet even with these injuries, I can still move freely, even fight... Perhaps this is the magic of Cultivation.’
Under the combined effects of the Healing Elixir and his Mana, Zhao Zuo’s wounds began to repair themselves rapidly. His breathing grew steady and calm, and the stabbing pain in his chest slowly faded.
「Several hours passed in a flash.」
Zhao Zuo opened his eyes. He first spat out a large mouthful of dark, congealed blood, then stretched his neck and got to his feet.
Although his chest still felt tight, it no longer impeded his movement. As he moved, however, faint cracking sounds came from within his body. ’The bones will need more time to heal.’
In the soft white light, Shen Yunjiao’s exquisite face was creased in a slight frown, a hint of pain on her features. ’She took several heavy blows when the Demon Beast was at its peak,’ Zhao Zuo thought. ’Her condition must be even worse than mine.’
Zhao Zuo didn’t know the extent of Shen Yunjiao’s injuries, and a thread of worry for her tugged at him. He stretched his body a little, but seeing nothing else to do, he sat down again and began to circulate his Mana, absorbing the Heaven and Earth Spiritual Power to advance his Cultivation.
As he cultivated, Zhao Zuo’s mind worked almost instinctively, pondering how to execute his Qi Cultivation technique more effectively, how to make the flow of his Mana gentler, and how to prolong his practice sessions as much as possible.
After dozens of cycles, he actually found a faster method of Cultivation. His daily progress now far exceeded what it had been when he first arrived in this world, especially with the aid of his Clear Heart Jade, Purifying Spirit Pills, and Huayang Bead.
’At this rate, I should break through to the Qi Cultivation Fifth Layer by the beginning of the first month.’
Four hours later, Zhao Zuo sensed movement. He quickly recalled his Mana to his Dantian and opened his eyes.
Shen Yunjiao was on her feet. Her complexion was much improved, though a trace of weakness still lingered in her expression.
"I plan to spend three days recuperating. Then we can sell the Demon Beast’s materials."
