Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Recuperating at Home

The two of them didn’t leave the cave to head home until the sky had darkened once more.

Before leaving, Zhao Zuo blocked the cave entrance with packed snow, making it look completely unremarkable from the outside. He also memorized the surrounding environment, treating it as a potential escape route for the future.

The cold wind blew relentlessly. With every step, the snow underfoot made a CRUNCH CRUNCH sound. The only light in the sky was a faint, crescent moon, making it so dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face.

The night grew even colder.

Zhao Zuo returned home and checked everything over. Ever since he got the Storage Bag, he hadn’t stored any Spirit Rice in his rice jar, so even if someone were to break in, they would likely leave empty-handed.

However, a significant portion of the woodpile in his storage room was clearly missing. Zhao Zuo couldn’t help but feel surprised. He wasn’t angry, just perplexed. ’There are so many trees on the mountain. Why risk stealing someone else’s firewood instead of chopping your own?’

Zhao Zuo’s expression remained unchanged. He set up a few warning traps on the roof, then rearranged the woodpile to create a space just big enough for him to sit and cultivate. Satisfied, he wrapped himself in a Beast Hide and squeezed into the hollow. He had originally planned to continue using his Mana to heal his injuries, but after a moment of thought, he took out his Communication Jade and infused it with Mana instead.

"Taoist Friend Shen, I’m home," Zhao Zuo said softly.

"Me too. I’m about to rest. I’ve been a bit tired the last couple of days."

A hint of distance and impatience tinged Shen Yunjiao’s voice. She was genuinely getting annoyed with Zhao Zuo. Every night, he would find some excuse to make a few minutes of completely irrelevant small talk. ’Wouldn’t it be better to use this time for Cultivation?’

"We Cultivators should be diligent... How about we get up and cultivate?" Zhao Zuo asked, seemingly oblivious to Shen Yunjiao’s impatience as he continued the aimless conversation.

The two of them then exchanged a dozen or so simple pleasantries.

"Taoist Friend Zhao, I’m tired."

Zhao Zuo said a few more things, but there was no sound from Shen Yunjiao’s Communication Jade.

Clearly, she was ignoring him on purpose again.

’Not bad. Experience points... plus thirty-six.’

The Communication Jade was carved from suet-white jade and inscribed with telepathic Spirit Patterns. The basic version came in a mother-child pair.

The Spirit Patterns carved on the surface of the mother jade were more perfect, determining the range the two Communication Jades could cover. The Lower Grade Communication Jade that Zhao Zuo had purchased could only be used for communication within a five-kilometer radius.

But... it could be upgraded. The condition for gaining experience was using the Communication Jade to talk, which was why Zhao Zuo pestered Shen Yunjiao every day.

There was no other reason; he simply wanted to gain experience points.

’Upgrade.’

After the Communication Jade was enveloped in a black light, Zhao Zuo stopped paying attention. He had been a little excited during the first few upgrades, but after so many times, the process had grown tedious. Only a full-tier advancement of a Magical Artifact could cause a ripple in his heart.

Ten-odd minutes later, the black light on the Communication Jade’s surface vanished. Zhao Zuo calmly checked the upgrade description.

[Upgrade Description: Communication Jade’s effective range has been increased to twenty kilometers.]

Each of the Communication Jade’s three upgrades had only increased its effective range. Zhao Zuo figured that only a full-tier advancement would produce a different kind of transformation, but he was ultimately limited by a shortage of Creation Points.

It wasn’t just the Communication Jade. The Clear Heart Jade Pendant, Huayang Bead, Sky-Breaking Saber, Golden Light Mirror, and Hundred-Change Mask—all these Magical Artifacts needed Creation Points to be upgraded. He had to find a way to keep forging Spirit Iron to get more Creation Points.

After some thought, Zhao Zuo decided to continue meditating and use his Mana to heal his injuries.

For the next few days, Zhao Zuo continued to grind the proficiency of his Magical Artifacts, day in and day out. As for Body Refining Cultivation, which required the coordination of all his muscles and bones, he had to give it up for now due to his injuries.

He also spent time asking around for a way to get an Earth Fire Furnace during the winter so he could continue acquiring Creation Points.

In the dead of night, Zhao Zuo climbed onto his roof. He gazed at the bright moon, contemplating his plans for the future.

Of course, there were still times he’d fall into a brief funk. He knew he wasn’t a genius. He worked hard at his Cultivation every day, but his progress was extremely limited.

Zhao Zuo listened to the distant battle cries and the roars of Demon Beasts. He had grown accustomed to this world; the sounds no longer inspired much fear in him, just a sense that they were exceptionally noisy.

Truthfully, he had been feeling a bit lost lately.

Longevity, immortality—those goals were too distant. Zhao Zuo had considered them, but he held no deep obsession with either.

’But what is the true purpose of all my hard work in Cultivation?’

Zhao Zuo gazed at the bright moon in the sky. He wanted to stay true to himself, to not lose the person he once was. He wanted to protect those he cared about, become as strong as he possibly could, and travel the world.

’Perhaps that’s my goal.’

The daily cycle of Cultivation was monotonous and tedious. Zhao Zuo knew he needed to relax, but caught in the vortex of the Moyun Workshop, threatened by the chaos of Demon Beasts and the menace of Tribulation Cultivators, he knew that if he let his guard down, he could end up as a pile of bones in a ditch someday.

After lamenting under the night sky for a while longer, Zhao Zuo lifted a roof tile and slipped back into his woodpile to continue his Cultivation. After so many days of healing, his injuries were nearly gone. Perhaps in another day or two, he could resume practicing his Body Refining Technique.

Suddenly, the Communication Jade inside Zhao Zuo’s Storage Bag began to vibrate.

"Taoist Friend Zhao, I’m planning to start selling the Demon Beast meat tomorrow," Shen Yunjiao’s voice transmitted.

Only four days had passed since their last hunt. Zhao Zuo’s own injuries hadn’t fully healed, so he figured Shen Yunjiao must still be injured as well. While a few days wasn’t long enough for the energy-rich Demon Beast meat to spoil, it was still best to sell it while it was fresh.

"Be careful," Zhao Zuo warned.

Shen Yunjiao was planning to sell the materials from two Demon Beasts, the Black and White Giant Bear and an Ice-Fire Python. Altogether, they were worth around fifteen hundred Spirit Stones—a fortune large enough to drive many people mad. This sale would be far more dangerous than any before.

"I’ll be careful. If I run into danger and am killed, right before I die, I’ll hide my Storage Bag in a tree trunk within a hundred meters of where I fall. You can go and get it," Shen Yunjiao’s voice transmitted from the Communication Jade.

Her voice betrayed no emotion, as if she were merely stating a contingency plan.

If she were to die, Zhao Zuo was the person she would be entrusting with everything.

Zhao Zuo’s mind was in turmoil, and for a moment, he didn’t know how to respond. ’Should I offer to lend her the Hundred-Change Mask? Or maybe I should handle some of the selling myself?’

"Are you listening?" Shen Yunjiao asked when she didn’t get a response.

"I’m listening. If you run into anyone tailing you, use the Communication Jade to contact me. I’ll come save you."

This wasn’t an impulsive conclusion on Zhao Zuo’s part.

"Okay." Shen Yunjiao’s reply was much simpler this time, and then she fell silent.

Zhao Zuo frowned slightly as he looked at the Communication Jade. ’Only three experience points tonight.’

The next day, Shen Yunjiao began selling the Demon Beast meat as planned. Zhao Zuo’s injuries had completely healed, so he divided his cultivation time into three parts: grinding experience, Body Refining Cultivation, and absorbing and converting Heaven and Earth Spiritual Power.
