Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Swift Kill in the Snow
For a moment, Zhao Zuo wanted to give Shen Yunjiao a few words of advice. But then he thought, ’She probably has more experience with this kind of situation than I do,’ so he held his tongue. Rather than waste his breath, it was better to hurry and meet up with her.
Zhao Zuo was moving quickly, and he activated a Light Body Talisman to further increase his speed. Having received Shen Yunjiao’s sudden call for help, he was faintly worried.
"There are only two enemies, at the Qi Cultivation Sixth Layer. They’re masked, so I don’t know who they are."
The Communication Jade in his hand vibrated slightly. Shen Yunjiao’s voice was mixed with ragged breaths, likely because the recent battle had aggravated her injuries.
Zhao Zuo’s tension eased slightly. ’Two enemies at the Qi Cultivation Sixth Layer aren’t a huge problem. If we coordinate well... we should be able to turn this around and kill them both.’
’At worst, even if Shen Yunjiao’s injuries are severe, it shouldn’t be hard for the two of us to get away.’
He maintained his top speed, carefully watching his surroundings. His eyes swept back and forth between the dense woods and open clearings on either side of the road, searching for that familiar red Taoist Robe.
CLANG CLANG CLANG... BANG!
Suddenly, Zhao Zuo’s ears twitched. He’d detected the sound of weapons clashing in the distance.
Heading toward the sound, Zhao Zuo advanced another few hundred meters. He hid quietly behind the trunk of a century-old tree to observe the distant battlefield. Indeed, two masked Tribulation Cultivators were attacking a gray-robed Loose Cultivator.
Seeing no sign of that familiar figure, Zhao Zuo couldn’t help but raise the Communication Jade to his lips. His brow furrowed as he asked anxiously.
"Are there any distinguishing landmarks near you?"
There were about seven or eight roads from Moyun Market back to Qingni Lane, but only one was a direct route. Shen Yunjiao most likely wouldn’t have taken a detour, which meant the two of them weren’t too far apart.
Zhao Zuo waited for a long time but received no answer. He had no choice but to resume his aimless search.
Moyun Market and the four major districts had been established for three hundred years. The tallest trees lining the roads were over a hundred meters high. Even in the dead of winter, their thick trunks were enough to obstruct his view, hampering the progress of his search.
Another ten-odd minutes passed before that red, elegant figure finally appeared in Zhao Zuo’s line of sight. At this moment, she was clutching a red longsword... being pursued by two people. She fought as she retreated, and for the time being, she wasn’t on the verge of defeat, but her face was already terribly pale.
The other two, one tall and one short, were both dressed in black with their faces covered. One of them also used a longsword, while the other wielded a silver, crescent-shaped blade with a nearly ninety-degree curve.
Although the two were pursuing Shen Yunjiao, they were wary of a final, desperate counterattack. That was why they only chased her closely without dealing a fatal blow, instead constantly forcing her to turn and defend, aggravating her injuries.
Zhao Zuo halted and, with a wave of his hand, changed his face to that of Zhao Yun. ’If I can’t annihilate both enemies, at least changing my face means I won’t have to worry about future repercussions.’
With his preparations complete, Zhao Zuo held his breath and concentrated his spirit. He slowly approached the center of the battle, continuously pouring Mana into his Sky-Breaking Saber, ready to strike at any moment.
He wasn’t aiming for an Instant Kill, but to grievously wound one of them in an instant, closing the gap between them as much as possible.
One hundred meters. Fifty meters.
Zhao Zuo stopped hiding and pushed off with his legs, rapidly closing in on the battle. Before the two could react, the Sky-Breaking Saber at his waist shot out. At the same time... Shen Yunjiao swiped her Storage Bag and tossed the Black Flame Saber toward the approaching Zhao Zuo.
CRACK.
CRACK.
CRACK.
The Sky-Breaking Saber crossed dozens of meters, shattering three Vajra Talisman barriers in succession. Specks of golden light scattered in all directions, but the attack’s momentum didn’t slow in the slightest. By the time the taller cultivator reacted, his eyes were filled with terror.
He hastily raised his longsword to block the Sky-Breaking Saber’s path.
The next second, with a crisp, melodious sound, the longsword-type Magical Artifact snapped in two. The cultivator’s eyes went dull. He stared at his utterly shattered longsword, but before he could even beg for mercy, his head was struck by an immense force... and burst like a watermelon.
Barely three seconds had passed between Zhao Zuo launching his attack and catching the Black Flame Saber from Shen Yunjiao. In that short time, the tall, masked man, ambushed by the Sky-Breaking Saber, had already died.
Zhao Zuo gazed at the headless corpse, his heart utterly calm. He had already circulated his Qi Blood to fill his entire body. A faint golden light emerged, and enveloped in its dim glow, his muscles became as hard as steel. The Body Refining Technique not only enhanced his strength but also bolstered his defense.
Swift as rushing thunder, ravenous as a wildfire.
The shorter Tribulation Cultivator sensed that things were going badly, but he was unwilling to simply retreat. He immediately poured Mana into the curved saber in his hand. The blade emitted a silver glow as he slashed violently at Zhao Zuo.
"Fellow Taoist, be careful! That saber is poisoned!" Shen Yunjiao called out a reminder from behind him.
Facing the attack, Zhao Zuo was surprisingly calm. He met the strike head-on, swinging his own saber in a fierce slash. Although there was no technique to his move, it was backed by the immense force of nearly twelve thousand catties. The blade cut through the air, letting out a great roar like that of a tiger.
BANG.
The two sabers collided. The shorter Tribulation Cultivator immediately felt an irresistible force crash into him. The power carried by the blade traveled up his crescent-shaped weapon and into his body. With the sound of tearing silk, the sleeves on both of his arms exploded into black tatters.
Unable to withstand such immense force, the skin on his arms split open and his blood vessels burst.
"Hah!"
Seizing the advantage, Zhao Zuo was relentless. He took a step forward and let out a low shout.
In truth, he had never learned any Blade Skill, and his techniques were extremely limited. His attacks were basically just smashing with brute force, effectively using the long saber like a warhammer. He looked incredibly imposing and majestic, but in reality, he was just an inexperienced greenhorn.
He struck three consecutive times, each blow heavier than the one before.
The masked cultivator struggled to dodge, constantly looking for an opportunity to counterattack. He desperately channeled the Mana in his body, repeatedly swinging his saber to resist, but his confidence was gradually draining away.
’I can’t match his strength.’
The Tribulation Cultivator barely withstood another of Zhao Zuo’s attacks before flinging out a handful of flying needles and a black powder. A foul odor spread on the wind. Zhao Zuo’s heart suddenly tightened, and he immediately retreated, pulling out an Antidote Pill and tossing it into his mouth.
Zhao Zuo let out a breath once he was clear of the poison smoke. He ultimately decided not to give chase. For one, Shen Yunjiao was injured. For another, he was worried the enemy might have a trump card up his sleeve.
"Taoist Friend Shen, are your injuries severe?"
Zhao Zuo bent down and retrieved his Sky-Breaking Saber, securing it to a hidden clasp at his waist. He didn’t rush to loot the corpse, instead turning to Shen Yunjiao.
"They’re rather serious." Shen Yunjiao’s face paled as she nodded.
Zhao Zuo bent over and began to search the man’s robes. After about ten-odd seconds, he had only found a few Talismans and three Spirit Stones, which couldn’t help but leave him a little disappointed.
"Bah. So poor."
