Carmilla and Scarlet were latched onto both sides of Victor’s neck, drinking his blood with an intensity he was starting to consider excessive.

Carmilla kept one hand pressed against his chest while her fangs remained buried deep in the right side of his neck. Scarlet was doing practically the same thing on the other side, wrapped around his arm as she drank in long swallows, showing almost no desire to stop.

Victor sat on the sofa between them, completely relaxed despite the amount of blood he was losing, letting his regeneration gradually replace what they consumed.

"You two have been pretty greedy lately," he commented while running one hand through Carmilla’s hair.

She withdrew her fangs for only a few seconds, wiping a thin line of blood from the corner of her lips.

"I’m getting stronger. Naturally, I need more blood to sustain my recovery."

Scarlet did not even pull away.

She kept drinking while raising one finger, indicating that she also wanted to answer.

After a few more swallows, she finally released Victor’s neck and breathed out in satisfaction.

"I just like your blood."

She ran her tongue over her lips.

"When I drink it, everything inside me feels more alive. My energy responds better, my senses become clearer, and even my body feels lighter."

"So you’re drinking because you like it."

"That too."

Victor gave a small laugh and went back to petting both of them.

Carmilla returned to his neck with far less shame, while Scarlet settled more comfortably against his arm before biting him again.

The situation had become so common that Victor had practically stopped thinking about how much blood they consumed.

His body produced enough to compensate, and Body Refinement had made his recovery much more efficient.

Even so, he could clearly see how much both of them were changing.

Carmilla was recovering her power at an increasingly rapid pace.

Scarlet was too.

And after everything that had happened over the last few months, Victor was finally beginning to feel that his own preparations had reached an acceptable point.

He closed his eyes for a few seconds while his fingers continued moving through their hair.

Ever since returning to the past, practically every major decision he had made had revolved around one thing:

Preventing the future he knew.

He had found Carmilla and broken her seal.

He had saved Scarlet by accident.

He had kept the greatest prodigies of the Valentine Family alive and eliminated Edgar before he could cause any more problems.

Natasha would not die from the same illness.

Jake had been prevented from repeating the disaster Victor remembered, and the Werewolves’ movements had been discovered far earlier than they should have been.

Beyond that, Victor himself was no longer the weak man Serafall would need to carry while fleeing a burning headquarters.

Now he could fight.

He could protect others.

He could survive.

There was less than a year left until the period when the incident should have happened, but Victor had already changed so many pieces that he was starting to believe he could finally slow down.

Not abandon his preparations.

Not stop training.

Just breathe a little.

For the first time since returning, maybe he could enjoy this life without treating every day like a countdown.

Carmilla slowly withdrew her fangs.

"You’ve been very thoughtful lately."

Victor opened his eyes.

"I have a few things on my mind."

"We noticed."

Carmilla wiped his neck with her thumb before his regeneration closed the bite marks.

"You stare into space when you think no one is paying attention."

Scarlet was still clinging to his other side, but she slowed down as well.

"And sometimes it looks like you’re waiting for something to happen."

Victor remained silent.

He did not want to lie to them.

He had already done that long enough with other people, and every time it became harder to hide the fact that he knew events that had not happened yet.

"I’m going to tell you both something soon," he finally said. "As soon as a few things I have in mind are resolved. I just need you to wait a little longer."

Scarlet withdrew her fangs.

She looked at Victor for a few seconds before shrugging.

"We already know you’re hiding something."

Victor turned his face.

"You do?"

"We don’t know what," she replied. "But we know there is something."

Carmilla confirmed with a small nod.

Scarlet adjusted herself beside him.

"We never asked because it isn’t our place to force you to tell us. You freed us from our seals, gave us a home, stayed with us, and you love us. For me, that is already more than I expected to receive when I woke up."

Victor remained quiet.

Scarlet smiled.

"So whatever you’re hiding, I’ll support you. I just hope it isn’t something as stupid as deciding to die alone to save everyone."

Victor looked away.

Scarlet narrowed her eyes.

"That reaction was suspicious."

"It’s not that."

"I really hope not."

Carmilla wrapped an arm around him.

"I’m too old not to recognize when someone is hiding something."

Her voice lost some of its earlier lightness.

"And I also know the difference between a secret and betrayal."

Victor looked at her.

Carmilla kept a calm expression, but there was an unpleasant memory behind those words.

"I’ve felt real betrayal before," she continued. "The rawest kind. I know what it feels like when someone lies because they intend to hurt you. I know what it feels like when someone hides something because they want to use you. What I see in you isn’t that."

She touched his face.

"You’re protecting something. Maybe us. Maybe the family. Maybe even yourself. So I’ll wait until you decide to speak."

Victor spent several seconds looking at the two of them.

Then he smiled.

He held Scarlet’s face first and gave her a gentle kiss.

Then he did the same with Carmilla, lingering a little longer before pulling away.

"You two are incredible."

Carmilla smiled immediately.

"I know."

Scarlet pointed at herself.

"Me too."

"Especially modest."

"That isn’t one of our qualities," Carmilla replied.

She settled more comfortably on the sofa and looked back at Victor.

"But there’s something else I want to do soon."

Victor recognized that tone.

"What?"

"Reveal myself."

He went quiet.

Carmilla continued:

"I’m strong enough now that I don’t need to keep hiding. I want the Valentine Family to know that Carmilla Valentine is still alive."

Victor sighed.

"That’s going to cause chaos."

"That’s part of the reason."

Scarlet smiled.

Victor looked at both of them.

"Better to wait."

Carmilla did not look pleased.

"How long?"

"Until my things are resolved."

Victor wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

"After that, you can cause whatever trouble you want. You can appear in front of Vlad, walk into the main headquarters, or announce to everyone that you’re back. I won’t stop you."

Carmilla thought for a few seconds before agreeing.

"All right."

Scarlet made a small pout.

"I wanted to show myself too."

"You will."

"Later."

"Later."

She kept pouting.

Then her partial transformation began.

The fox ears appeared first among her hair, twitching a few times before settling into place.

Soon after, a large red tail appeared behind her and began slowly swaying over the sofa.

Victor looked.

Scarlet tilted her head.

"I want petting."

"You were already getting petting."

"I want more."

Victor grabbed her tail.

Scarlet immediately sank her fangs back into his neck, satisfied, while he ran his fingers through the soft fur of her tail.

Her ears twitched a few times as she settled even closer.

Carmilla watched the scene.

"She’s getting spoiled."

Scarlet answered without taking her mouth off Victor’s neck.

"Mmhm."

Victor laughed.

"You can’t talk while drinking."

Scarlet kept drinking anyway.

Victor sank a little deeper into the sofa, with Carmilla resting against one side and Scarlet practically wrapped around him on the other.

For months, his mind had been unable to let go of the future for even a few minutes.

But in that moment, he decided to let it.

The incident still existed.

The threat was still not fully understood.

But for the first time since returning to the past, Victor felt that he had done enough to allow himself a few days of peace.
