Chapter 105: Chapter 105: Let Me Try
"My grandfather battled in the business world in his youth, accumulating a host of old injuries. Last year, he accidentally injured his lumbar spine. Compounded by his advanced age and blocked qi and blood, he’s now paralyzed from the waist down. His legs are weak, he can’t stand or walk, and he suffers from piercing pain on rainy days. Many famous doctors have examined him but were helpless. They say it’s nerve damage and stagnant meridians, and that all he can do is rest. There’s no cure."
As Tristan Forrester spoke of Patriarch Forrester’s illness, his expression turned grim.
"It’s that serious?" He remembered that just three years ago, Grandpa Forrester was full of vigor and walked with a spring in his step.
"I heard that the Grayson Family of Northolme is a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. A while back, they cured Miss Kensington’s chronic illness, which was a blockage of qi and blood in her heart meridian. I specifically invited them here to treat Patriarch Forrester," Tristan Forrester said. "Come on, let’s go see what they’re really made of!"
In the living room, Patriarch Forrester was lying on the sofa while Mandy Grayson examined him. Her initially relaxed expression had become somewhat grave.
’She wasn’t confident she could cure this illness.’
’She’d heard the Forrester Family had sought out countless famous doctors, all of whom were helpless.’
"Dr. Grayson, how is he?"
The deep voice of a man accompanied a set of footsteps.
Mandy Grayson quickly turned around. After seeing the two familiar faces, she was momentarily startled before quickly averting her gaze.
"Mr. Forrester, the Patriarch’s condition is due to the frailty of old age and undernourished muscles and bones. I’ll start by prescribing a few nourishing herbal soups to invigorate his blood, resolve stasis, and strengthen his muscles and bones, complemented by standard acupuncture and massage therapy. However, he is quite old and the root of his illness runs deep. I can only do my best to manage his condition; I can’t guarantee a complete cure."
"I recall that on the phone, Dr. Grayson solemnly assured me she was eighty percent confident she could cure the Patriarch."
Mandy Grayson met the man’s cold, sharp eyes, and her heart skipped a beat. She felt an invisible pressure that made it hard for her to breathe.
’She had been bluffing!’
’At the time, she had successfully treated a number of chronic conditions, and her confidence had grown into arrogance, making her words reckless and conceited.’
"Mr. Forrester, I had only seen the diagnostic reports and heard your description. I didn’t realize the Patriarch’s condition was this severe..."
"I heard that Miss Kensington of Northolme was considered beyond recovery, yet Dr. Grayson managed to pull her back from the brink of death. I wonder if you see any chance for a turnaround with my grandfather’s stubborn illness?"
"I can try..."
"Try?"
Tristan Forrester sneered, "Do you take my grandfather for one of your lab rats?"
Mandy Grayson shrank back, biting her lip, unable to say a word.
’She regretted it. She shouldn’t have made such a grand claim and taken on this case!’
’Before coming here, all she thought about was the fame, not the consequences she would face if she failed.’
Mitchell Grayson stepped in front of Mandy Grayson, shielding her from the man’s cold, intimidating gaze.
"Mr. Forrester, I’m truly sorry. I don’t know what my younger sister promised you before. She recently had a stroke of luck and cured a few cases, so it’s understandable her ego is a bit inflated. If her words were reckless or offensive, I hope you won’t take it to heart. We can only do our best to manage his condition; we would never presume to claim we can provide a complete cure."
Tristan Forrester’s expression grew colder, and his voice was chilling and oppressive. "Once you’ve said something, you must be responsible for your words. My time is precious; I have none to waste on you."
The Patriarch, who had been silent all this time, finally spoke up.
"Tyson, don’t make things difficult for them. There’s no doctor in the world who can guarantee they can cure every illness one hundred percent of the time. Since she was willing to come, let’s just let her try."
The Patriarch was rather optimistic and had long accepted the reality of his paralysis. It was only because his grandson was so devoted that he refused to give up and kept searching for treatment.
Tristan Forrester concealed the coldness in his eyes and sat down on the sofa.
"Then please, Dr. Grayson, give it a try."
Mandy Grayson felt immense pressure, as if she were being roasted over a fire. She was trapped, with no way out. She had no choice but to bite the bullet, forcing herself to appear calm as she administered acupuncture to the Patriarch and wrote a prescription, her fingertips trembling with nervousness.
"Mr. Forrester, the... the Patriarch is old, and his meridians are stagnant. A single acupuncture session might not be effective... Have him take these nourishing herbal soups on schedule first. With slow conditioning, there might be some improvement."
"How long until we see results? There must be a timeframe."
Cold sweat beaded on Mandy Grayson’s forehead. She stammered for a while before finally managing to reply.
"I-I can’t say for sure... Everyone’s constitution is different, and his condition is severe. I-I can only do my best."
Tristan Forrester’s expression was cold and dark. He turned to the housekeeper and ordered in a low voice.
"Take them to the guest quarters for now. They are not to leave without my permission."
Mandy Grayson’s expression changed drastically. She frantically grabbed Mitchell Grayson’s arm.
"Mr. Forrester, what is the meaning of this?" Mitchell Grayson asked in a low voice.
"You were the ones who made the grand claims, and you were the ones who administered the treatment. Since you wanted to ’try,’ you’ll wait until there’s some improvement in the Patriarch’s legs before you two return to Northolme. You carry the title of ’miracle doctor,’ so you’ll have to show me what you can really do."
"..."
Mandy Grayson’s fingers tightened. "Mr. Forrester, I never said that I was the one who cured Miss Kensington. You must have misunderstood."
"Oh?" Tristan Forrester narrowed his eyes. "But when I asked you, Dr. Grayson, you didn’t correct me, did you? Or were you hoping to get lucky and pass off someone else’s achievement as your own?"
Mandy Grayson’s face flushed then paled, a look of deep embarrassment on her face.
"Mr. Forrester, it’s true that my sister wasn’t the one who cured Miss Kensington. But she has studied medicine since she was a child, and her skills are considered the most outstanding among her peers! She came here with the best of intentions, genuinely wanting to cure the Patriarch’s illness. She had absolutely no intention of deceiving anyone."
His words did sound somewhat sincere.
Tristan Forrester’s expression softened.
"Cure him, and I’ll double your fee as a reward. Fail, and you won’t get a single cent. Furthermore, you will have to publicly clarify that you were not the one who cured Miss Kensington of Northolme."
Afterward, the housekeeper led them to the guest quarters.
Jared Hawthorne lowered his gaze and asked in a low voice, "Vesper, do you think there was a problem with her treatment just now?"
"In Elder Forrester’s condition, you can’t forcefully stimulate blood circulation, nor should you apply needles recklessly. Those few needles she just used were actually counterproductive, making the blockages even more severe."
’Besides, seeing that Patriarch Forrester had no reaction when she applied the needles, his condition is probably so severe that it won’t be cured anytime soon.’
Tristan Forrester’s hearing was far beyond that of a normal person, and his sharp gaze fell upon her.
"Miss Grayson knows medicine as well?"
"..."
Vesper Grayson was stunned. She had clearly been whispering to Jared Hawthorne, keeping her voice extremely low, yet the man had heard her perfectly.
’Is that really the hearing of a normal person?’
Before she could speak, Jared Hawthorne spoke up calmly.
"Vesper does know a little. To be honest, she was the one who cured Miss Kensington’s chronic illness."
Tristan Forrester was surprised, and his gaze on Vesper Grayson deepened.
"I didn’t expect Miss Grayson to have such skills!"
Vesper Grayson quickly waved her hands and said humbly, "I only studied it for a little while when I was young, and never systematically. I can’t be considered a real doctor. That time was probably just a lucky break."
"Miss Grayson, you’re being too modest. To be able to cure Miss Kensington’s long-standing chronic illness with only what you learned as a child proves your outstanding talent and extraordinary medical skills."
"I implore you, Miss Grayson, to treat my grandfather. Regardless of the outcome, I will be eternally grateful!"
She looked at Jared Hawthorne, met his encouraging gaze, and pressed her lips together.
"Alright, I’ll try... but I can’t guarantee I can cure him. May I see the Patriarch’s previous diagnostic reports?"
’If the nerves were completely severed, the muscles and bones damaged beyond repair, or the meridians were dead, then it would truly be a hopeless case. No matter how masterful her acupuncture technique, she wouldn’t be able to save him.’
