Chapter 119: Chapter 119: Little Liar
Vesper Grayson carried her champagne to a quiet hallway, away from the banquet hall’s clamor, and her surroundings instantly grew quiet.
"Are you here to plead on Miss Summers’s behalf, Miss Winters?"
Roya Winters sighed softly, her tone regretful.
"Her actions were so malicious, they’re truly unforgivable. President Grayson was kind enough not to call the police; she’s lucky for that. I’ve worked with her for many years, and while we have some history, I would never cover for her or condone this."
"Oh? Then why did you seek me out, Miss Winters...?"
"President Grayson, with Yvonne Lowell injured, tonight’s new product promotion absolutely cannot go wrong. If you wouldn’t mind, I could..."
"That wouldn’t be appropriate."
Vesper Grayson cut her off before she could finish.
Roya Winters was taken aback. "President Grayson, I know you have some misconceptions about me, and that’s why you chose Yvonne Lowell as Vaudin’s brand ambassador. But whether it’s in terms of fame or any other aspect, I am a better fit than she is."
"My impression of you does indeed differ from the rumors, Miss Winters, but I hold no personal prejudice against you. It’s simply that Yvonne Lowell’s personality and way of doing things are a better fit for Vaudin’s brand identity."
"President Grayson, now that Yvonne Lowell is injured, please give me a chance."
"I’m sorry, but the endorsement contract has already been signed. It cannot be changed."
’Signed?’
’When was it signed?’
The smile on Roya Winters’s face instantly froze.
’Yvonne Lowell was injured in an accident the moment she appeared tonight. There was no opportunity to sign a contract.’
"It was finalized a week ago; we just hadn’t made the official announcement. We intended to use tonight’s event to formally publicize it." Vesper Grayson took a small sip of her champagne, nodding with a faint smile. "Perhaps we’ll have a chance to cooperate in the future, Miss Winters."
Watching Vesper’s retreating figure, the smile completely vanished from Roya Winters’s face. Her usually innocent features twisted into a hideous, terrifying mask.
’All that effort, and not only did she gain nothing, but the plan backfired and she ended up losing out.’
’She had sacrificed Finn Summers and was out a million dollars for nothing!’
’What was it all for?’
...
Since someone was helping her entertain the guests, Vesper Grayson didn’t linger in the main hall. She turned and went up to a private room on the second floor.
Seeing the three of them leisurely sipping tea, her lips curved into a slight smile. "Guess who just came looking for me?"
"Who?" Elena handed her a cup of warm tea.
Vesper Grayson set down her champagne, took the teacup, and sat down beside Jared Hawthorne.
"Roya Winters."
As she spoke, she glanced, seemingly by chance, at Zane Rivers.
"What are you looking at me for?" Zane Rivers raised an eyebrow nonchalantly. "She’s just an artist signed to my company. There’s nothing between us."
"I saw President Rivers and Miss Winters looking awfully close not too long ago, practically a couple. And now you’re washing your hands of her so completely. It just goes to show, men are fickle creatures." Elena chuckled, then quickly added, "I’m not talking about you, of course."
There were only two men in the private room, so her words were clearly a jab at Zane Rivers.
Zane Rivers pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek, half-annoyed and half-amused. "You’re not even trying to be subtle, are you?"
"If the shoe fits, President Rivers... what can I do?" Elena arched an eyebrow, then turned to Vesper Grayson. "With Yvonne Lowell injured, is the official announcement going to be postponed?"
"That won’t be necessary."
Elena couldn’t help but exclaim, "I never would have thought... Roya Winters has such a pure, innocent face, yet she’s so vicious in her ambition to get ahead. To just discard her agent of many years, without even a single word of pleading on her behalf."
Vesper Grayson took a light sip of her hot tea and spoke softly, "That’s just human nature. It makes those who can stay true to their principles all the more precious."
In a messy world like the entertainment industry, a mix of the good and the bad, Yvonne Lowell’s purity and forthrightness already made her one of a kind.
The contrast only solidified her conviction that she had made the right choice.
Zane Rivers’s eyes narrowed slightly. "How are you so sure Roya Winters was involved? That it wasn’t just Finn Summers acting alone?"
Elena rolled her eyes at him. "She’s an artist at your company. You’re telling me you don’t know what kind of person she is?"
"I’m their boss, not their husband. There’s no need for me to know every last detail about them." Zane Rivers suddenly leaned closer, teasing her in a low voice by her ear, "I wonder if Gina would be willing to give me a chance to get to know you... intimately?"
’Gina...’
Elena’s whole body went stiff, and goosebumps erupted on her skin.
’Right now, all I want is to find a quiet place to be alone!!’
"Vesper, Yance, I have to go, something’s come up. I’ll have the PR department handle the official announcement tomorrow morning."
"I’ll see you out."
"No need. You guys chat."
The moment Elena stood up, Zane Rivers got to his feet as well.
"Well, I should get going, too. I’ll have my assistant follow up on Yvonne Lowell’s injury at the hospital tomorrow."
As soon as the words were out, he quickly strode off in the direction Elena had gone.
Vesper Grayson looked completely baffled. "What’s with those two?"
"I’m not sure either." Jared Hawthorne reached out and pulled her steadily into his arms. He lowered his head to her ear, his breath low and warm. "Forget about them. Look at me."
The tips of Vesper Grayson’s ears grew hot. She placed a hand lightly against his chest and chided him softly, "There are people outside."
A slight smile touched Jared Hawthorne’s lips. "They won’t dare come in without my permission."
"That doesn’t mean you can misbehave!" Vesper Grayson shot him a glare.
"So, how do you think I’ve been doing lately?"
The sudden change in topic made Vesper Grayson pause for a second, but she answered truthfully, "Mr. Hawthorne’s performance has been, as always, impeccable."
"I seem to recall that before I went to Portclyde, a certain someone said there would be a special surprise for good behavior. I’ve been waiting all this time, and I haven’t seen a thing." He lowered his head and took her delicate earlobe between his lips, nibbling gently, his tongue lapping at the sensitive skin. His warm breath ghosted across her neck. "Little liar."
A shiver ran through Vesper Grayson. Biting her lip, her cheeks flushed instantly. "Just... wait a little longer..."
"Until when?"
"I’ll tell you when I’ve figured it out."
Jared Hawthorne raised an eyebrow, the amusement in his eyes deepening. "Alright. I’ll be waiting for the good news. Don’t you disappoint me, Miss Grayson."
Despite a few small hiccups, the banquet was generally a success and came to a smooth conclusion.
...
「In a hospital room.」
Yvonne Lowell, her lower leg in a thick plaster cast from a fracture, leaned against the bed. Looking a little worse for wear, she was slowly removing her makeup with a compact mirror.
Lana Chandler had already found a caregiver for her. Returning to the room, she saw Yvonne taking off her own makeup and stepped forward to help.
"It’s okay, Miss Lana. I can do it myself."
Lana Chandler knew she was headstrong and independent, so she didn’t insist, instead taking a seat on the stool beside the bed.
"They say it takes a hundred days to recover from a broken bone, so just focus on resting for now. As for the person who hurt you, once the investigation is complete, the company will be sure to get justice for you."
Yvonne Lowell nodded lightly. "I know."
The words had barely left her lips when the door to the room was pushed open.
The two of them looked up to see Finn Summers standing in the doorway, her face deathly pale.
"Finn Summers, what are you doing here?" Lana Chandler’s brow furrowed.
Finn Summers didn’t answer. She walked straight to the bedside and gave Yvonne Lowell a deep bow.
"Yvonne Lowell, I’m the one who hurt you. I’m so sorry!"
Yvonne Lowell and Lana Chandler exchanged an astonished look.
"Finn Summers, do you have any idea what you’re saying?" Lana Chandler stood up, her expression grave.
"I know. I orchestrated Yvonne Lowell’s ’accident.’" Finn Summers suddenly dropped to her knees. "If you won’t forgive me, I’ll stay kneeling here until you do."
Yvonne Lowell’s brow furrowed, her gaze darkening as she looked down at her.
"Finn Summers, did Roya Winters put you up to this?"
