Chapter 118: Chapter 118: It Wasn’t Me
"Bring some alcohol," Manager Warner ordered a server.
Soon, a small basin of alcohol was placed in front of Finn Summers.
"Miss Summers, please place both of your hands in the basin."
Finn Summers clenched her fists, shooting a pleading glance at Roya Winters.
When their eyes met, Roya casually looked away.
Finn understood what Roya meant. ’If I’m really exposed, she won’t protect me. She’ll sever all ties with me without a second thought.’
’I wore gloves when I applied the lubricant earlier.’
’So even if I soak my hands in alcohol, there won’t be any reaction.’
She lifted her hands and plunged them in.
She quickly pulled them out, held them up, and displayed her completely unchanged fingers for everyone to see.
"See? Nothing! It wasn’t me!"
Maxim Chandler stepped forward. "Miss Summers, please submerge your entire hand in the alcohol."
This time, Finn Summers didn’t hesitate, submerging her hands completely in the basin.
"President Grayson, your baseless suspicion is going too far. There are plenty of other women here with short hair. Why not call them all over to prove their innocence? Or do you just think I’m an easy target?"
Vesper Grayson narrowed her eyes but said nothing.
Seeing her silence, Finn Summers grew bolder.
"If you don’t give me a proper explanation today, this isn’t over. I’ll make such a scene that everyone will hear about it."
Roya Winters’s lips twitched in a fleeting smirk. She quickly composed herself, took a step forward, and began to scold Finn Summers, seemingly in defense of Vesper Grayson.
"Finn, President Grayson is just worried about Yvonne Lowell. How can you be so aggressive?"
Then, she turned and gave Vesper Grayson an apologetic smile.
"Miss Grayson, Finn is a straightforward person, but she’s just very blunt. Please don’t hold it against her. If she has offended you in any way, I apologize on her behalf."
"Don’t be so quick to apologize. We’ll get to the bottom of this. If she’s been wrongly accused, I will apologize to her myself and provide compensation that she’ll find more than satisfactory." Vesper Grayson’s gaze was cold and her words were sharp. "But if I find out someone was behind this, I will show no mercy. I don’t go looking for trouble, but I’m not afraid of it either!"
When the time was up, Maxim Chandler spoke.
"Miss Summers, you can take your hands out now."
Finn Summers lifted her hands, but this time, a distinct white ring had appeared around her wrist.
The onlookers were stunned, their faces a mixture of expressions.
Still clinging to a sliver of hope, Finn Summers didn’t notice the subtle shift in everyone’s expressions.
"So, can you rule me out as a suspect now? Am I proven innocent?"
Roya Winters’s face darkened. ’That idiot,’ she thought. ’How could she leave behind evidence?’
She lunged forward and grabbed Finn Summers’s hand.
"Finn, what is this?"
"What?"
Following Roya’s gaze to her own wrist, Finn’s expression changed drastically when she saw the distinct white mark. The color drained from her face. She frantically hid her hand in her sleeve, bit her lip, and stammered out an explanation.
"This might be..."
She racked her brain but couldn’t come up with a plausible excuse.
Just then, a server approached and tossed a server’s uniform and a pair of used, lubricant-stained disposable gloves on the floor in front of Finn Summers.
"Manager Warner, we found these in the trash can in the locker room."
The last trace of color drained from Finn Summers’s face.
Manager Warner said angrily, "The security footage shows that you were the last person to enter the locker room after the banquet started. What else do you have to say for yourself?"
The woman in the footage, exiting the locker room with her head down and quickly walking away, was wearing an outfit identical to the one Finn Summers had on.
"You can’t see her face! How can you prove it was me?"
Finn Summers stubbornly refused to admit it, making a desperate last stand.
"It seems you won’t confess until you’re cornered."
Dolly Hughes came jogging over, pulling a man along with her. She was out of breath. "Boss, take a look! Is it her?"
The moment she got a clear look at the man, Finn Summers’s pupils contracted, and she quickly lowered her head.
The shopkeeper stared at her for a moment, then nodded. "That’s her. Forty minutes ago, she came into my store to buy lubricant. I asked her what she needed it for, but she didn’t answer. Just paid and left."
Finn Summers cried out desperately, "You’ve got the wrong person! It wasn’t me!"
"Miss, I’m only middle-aged, not senile. I might have to think for a second to remember someone from yesterday, but I never forget a customer I’ve seen on the same day."
With both a witness and physical evidence pointing to her, Finn Summers’s face turned ashen. She was cornered, with nothing left to say.
"Finn Summers, if you don’t confess, I’m calling the police," Vesper Grayson said, her gaze ice-cold. "But if you’re honest, I can give you a chance to make this right. I hope you won’t cling to some foolish hope and ruin your future over a stupid mistake."
A cold sweat broke out on Finn Summers’s brow as she snuck a glance at Roya Winters.
"Finn, I can’t believe you would do something like this! I’m so disappointed in you." Roya stepped forward, gripping Finn’s hand tightly. "What kind of grudge do you have against Yvonne Lowell to make you want to hurt her like this?"
"It was me!" Finn Summers shouted, shaking off Roya’s hand. She had nothing left to lose. "I don’t have a grudge against her, I just can’t stand the sight of her. If you must have a reason, it’s because she walked right past me last year when I was being hounded by debt collectors and didn’t lift a finger to help."
"Just for something so trivial?"
Vesper Grayson clearly didn’t believe her, and neither did anyone else. The reason was too flimsy.
"Yes, for something so trivial."
Finn Summers’s eyes turned red. "I did it all. I just wanted to humiliate her on her big day. I’ll take full responsibility for the consequences."
"Finn Summers, with your background, it couldn’t have been easy to get where you are. Don’t throw away your future over one foolish impulse." Vesper Grayson watched her intently, still wanting to give her a chance.
Finn Summers looked away and said through gritted teeth, "I did this, and I’ll face the consequences alone. I know what I’m doing!"
Since that was her stance, Vesper had nothing more to say.
"President Rivers, Finn Summers is an agent at Starlight. I’ll leave it to you to decide how to proceed."
Zane Rivers’s eyes narrowed, the corner of his mouth twisting into a cold smirk.
"As of today, Finn Summers is fired. You will be responsible for all medical expenses and losses resulting from Yvonne Lowell’s injury."
The costs were enormous, weighing down on Finn Summers like a mountain and making it hard for her to breathe.
After everyone had left, Finn rushed over to Roya.
"Roya, President Rivers fired me! You can’t just abandon me. I did all of this for you—"
Roya Winters shot her a sidelong glance. "At least you were smart enough to keep your mouth shut. Don’t worry. Once I sign the contract, I’ll help you take care of those expenses. For now, stay away from the company. If you show up, people might get suspicious of me, and that would look bad."
As she turned to leave, Finn Summers grabbed her arm and asked awkwardly,
"Could you transfer me some money first?"
Roya Winters frowned. Though reluctant, she transferred her a million.
"Use this for Yvonne Lowell’s compensation for now. And go to the hospital to check on her. Do whatever you can to stop her from pressing charges. Beg her to settle this privately if you have to."
"Okay, I get it."
She found Vesper Grayson in the main hall, attending to her guests.
"President Grayson, could I have a word?"
