Chapter 124: Chapter 124: Why No Reaction?

"No..."

Vesper Grayson glanced at him. "Do you want me to get pregnant, or are you afraid I’ll get pregnant?"

Hearing her silly question, Jared Hawthorne sighed and flicked her on the forehead.

"Oof..."

She rubbed her forehead in pain, looking at him with a wronged expression.

"What do you think?" he retorted, turning the question back on her.

"How would I know? President Hawthorne is so inscrutable, who could possibly guess?"

’Anyway, ever since we started living together, we’ve been intimate frequently, and I haven’t been taking any birth control. We’re just letting nature take its course.’

Jared Hawthorne’s hand came to rest on her lower abdomen, his eyes dark.

"Why isn’t there a reaction?"

’Is it because I’m not performing well enough?’

’Looks like I need to redouble my efforts.’

"What did you say?"

Vesper Grayson hadn’t heard him clearly, a hint of confusion in her eyes.

"If you’re not tired, should we go again?"

"..."

’This damn man is still in high spirits.’

She quickly closed her eyes and yawned. "So sleepy."

Jared Hawthorne was speechless.

...

In the morning, after Vesper Grayson finished her work, she went to Milton Grayson’s office to find him.

"Miss Grayson, the Chairman didn’t come to the company this morning."

"Did something happen?"

’Dad has always been a man of routine, and the company is his top priority. He rarely misses a day without a good reason.’

"The Second Miss beat up Mr. Keane last night. The Keane Family came to demand an explanation this morning. I’m not too clear on the specific details."

Vesper Grayson’s gaze flickered. "Is it serious?"

"It’s probably not too serious."

"Okay, I understand."

’Gwen must have gone to settle scores with Gael Keane after dropping me home last night. I didn’t expect her to actually get physical.’

She drove to the Grayson Residence.

As soon as she stepped into the living room, she felt the atmosphere, as heavy and cold as ice. The two sides were locked in a standoff, tensions at a breaking point.

Gwen Grayson stared at Gael Keane’s face, which was swollen like a pig’s head, and her eyes were wide with anger. "I’m just a girl, how hard could I have hit him? He clearly ran into something himself and is just trying to frame me!"

Mrs. Keane, Joy Quillan, looked displeased. "Gwen, your mother and I have been good friends for years, and I’ve always treated you like my own daughter. How could you hit Gael? As for whether you’re trying to frame him, we have witnesses and surveillance footage. Do you think you can deny it?"

Joyce Rivers quickly tried to smooth things over with a placating smile. "Joy, the kids just had a little spat. There must be a misunderstanding."

Gael Keane clutched his swollen cheek, grimacing in pain as he proclaimed his innocence. "Miss Joyce, she did it on purpose! It was my birthday last night, and she rushed in and started hitting me without any reason, making me lose face in front of all my friends. And even then, I didn’t fight back."

"Gael, you and Gwen grew up together and have always gotten along well. You might even become family one day. As the man, you should be more magnanimous with her," Joyce Rivers urged. "Just do it as a favor for Miss Joyce, and let it go."

"I wouldn’t dare marry her!" Gael Keane snorted. "I came today to discuss a business deal with the Grayson Family. As long as you transfer that plot of land in Riverbend North to me, I’ll let bygones be bygones. Otherwise, if this blows up, what family in Northolme would dare to marry Gwen Grayson?"

Milton Grayson’s expression darkened. "What do you mean?"

"The Riverbend North plot that Gwen Grayson acquired a while ago has had its planning review and construction permits held up. The losses will be disastrous if it’s delayed any longer. Why not resell it to me? I’m willing to buy it at a price higher than the market value."

"In your dreams!" Gwen Grayson spat. "You know better than anyone why the permits for that land are being held up! Gael Keane, you’re a despicable, shameless villain!"

Gael Keane’s face instantly turned ugly. "Mr. Grayson, Miss Joyce, look at her. She’s completely unreasonable."

Joyce Rivers held back the agitated Gwen, asking in a low voice, "Gwen, what does this have to do with Gael?"

"Mom, why do you think I hit him?" Gwen Grayson glared at Gael Keane. "He colluded with Miles Yates behind the scenes to deliberately block the approvals, and he was even scheming against my sister!"

Milton Grayson’s anger flared, and he shot to his feet. "Explain yourself! What do you mean, ’scheming against your sister’?"

Gwen Grayson no longer held back and laid out the whole story on the spot.

"You bastard!"

Milton Grayson was furious. He raised his hand and slapped Gael Keane across the face. "You dare to have designs on my daughter? You deserve to be beaten to death!"

"Milton Grayson, how dare you hit my son!" Mr. Keane shot up, pulling Gael Keane behind him. "You’re taking Gwen’s one-sided story as truth?"

"I know my own daughter. She would never slander someone with something like this!" Milton Grayson’s gaze was sharp, and he didn’t back down an inch.

Joyce Rivers was also so angry her face turned pale. "And to think I’ve always treated you so well! I can’t believe you’d scheme against Gwen like this. You’re worse than an animal!"

Joy Quillan, fiercely protective of her son, immediately shot back, "Joyce Rivers, watch your mouth! What right do you have to curse my son? And look at the fine daughter you’ve raised—spoiled, domineering, and malicious. She’s even jealous enough to plot against her own sister. What good can she be?"

"She’s still a hundred times better than that bastard you raised!" Joyce Rivers didn’t yield. "How the sisters get along is none of your business! The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree—he’s just as selfish and ungrateful as you are! Have you forgotten back in school, when everyone else was ostracizing and mocking you, who was it that stood up for you?"

"Tch! Who asked for your help? Weren’t you just trying to play the hero and show off your superiority in front of me? I knew it all along, you’ve always looked down on me deep down!"

The two former best friends, once as close as sisters, had now completely turned on each other. Old grievances came pouring out as they argued, faces red and spittle flying.

Vesper Grayson parked her car. As she walked through the courtyard gate, she could hear the fierce argument from the living room, the noise growing louder the closer she got.

It was a three-on-three standoff, with neither side willing to back down even an inch.

Even Milton Grayson, who was usually mild-tempered, was now engaged in a war of words with Harold Keane. The scene was thick with gunpowder.

Gwen Grayson was the first to spot Vesper Grayson standing in the entryway and immediately shouted, "Sis! This shameless Gael Keane is trying to pin the blame on me, and he’s still after my land in Riverbend North!"

Hearing her, everyone stopped arguing, and all eyes turned to Vesper Grayson in unison.

Milton Grayson walked quickly over to her, his expression grave. "Gwen said that Miles Yates has improper intentions toward you. Is this true?"

"It is true." Vesper Grayson looked up at Gael Keane, her tone calm but sharp. "President Keane, pulling these little tricks behind the scenes is not the act of a gentleman. If you’re a man, and you have some complaint, why not say it out in the open?"

Gael Keane met her gaze, a flicker of guilt flashing in his eyes, but he forced himself to remain calm. "Vesper, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Don’t be biased and fall for Gwen Grayson’s trap."

"Gael Keane, you still dare to make false accusations! I heard what you said to your friends with my own ears!" Gwen Grayson’s chest heaved with anger. She quickly looked at Vesper Grayson. "Sis, I’m not lying! He’s the one sowing discord!"

"Miss Grayson, everyone knows you and Gwen Grayson are half-sisters who haven’t gotten along since you were children. Who knows if this isn’t just one of Gwen Grayson’s schemes against you. You’d better wise up and not be fooled by certain people."

After saying this, Joy Quillan deliberately shot a look at Joyce Rivers, the provocative intent of her words self-evident.
