My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable

Chapter 125: The Middle of Next Month

Chapter 125: Chapter 125: The Middle of Next Month

"Joy Quillan, you’re spouting nonsense! I’m going to tear that mouth of yours apart!"

Joyce Rivers’s face went white with rage. She lunged forward and grabbed a handful of Joy’s hair. Joy Quillan shrieked in pain and immediately began to claw back. In an instant, the two were a tangled mess, tearing at each other.

Vesper Grayson: "..."

’So this is what it looks like when women who were once as close as sisters turn on each other. It’s truly an ugly sight.’

The living room immediately descended into chaos.

The others tried to step in and pull them apart, but their attempts only made things more chaotic.

Vesper Grayson rubbed her temples, walked over to an armchair, and sat down. Her tone was unhurried.

"If you two don’t stop, I’m calling the police."

They were all people of status. If this ended up at a police station, it would be humiliating for everyone involved.

Though both women reluctantly let go, they continued to glare daggers at each other, as if they were mortal enemies.

"President Keane, you know better than anyone who was behind last night’s scheme." Vesper Grayson’s cold gaze landed on Gael Keane. "If I really wanted to find evidence, it wouldn’t be difficult at all."

Gael Keane’s expression soured. "It’s not like anything actually happened to you, is it?"

"So what?" Vesper Grayson scoffed. "Does that mean I deserved to be set up by you?"

"Vesper, it’s because I like you so much. After you rejected me so many times, I wasn’t thinking straight..." Gael Keane softened his tone. "If you’re willing, I can marry you immediately."

"Absolutely not! I refuse!" Mason Grayson’s expression darkened as he sharply interjected, "Someone like you thinks he’s worthy of my daughter?"

Gwen Grayson nodded in agreement. "My sister is already engaged. Her fiancé is handsome, distinguished, and comes from a powerful family. A guy like you isn’t even worthy of carrying her shoes."

The faces of the Keane family instantly darkened.

"Don’t think we’re desperate for this match. I’m the one looking down on your Grayson Family!" Joy Quillan’s eyes filled with contempt. "I heard Miss Grayson ran away from her own wedding and disappeared for three years. Who knows what kind of shady characters she was running with out there? She’s hardly pure anymore. You want my son to take your damaged goods? You’ll have to get my permission first!"

While Joyce Rivers wasn’t particularly fond of Vesper Grayson on a normal day, she couldn’t just sit by and do nothing while someone publicly slandered her reputation.

"You have the nerve to talk about other people? Back in school, who knows how many men you slept with to climb the social ladder. Keane, I bet you still have no idea how many men Joy threw herself at back in the day." Joyce Rivers glanced at Gael Keane. "For all we know, this son of yours might not even be yours."

She shot Harold Keane a look of sympathy and pity.

Harold Keane’s face was taut. He gave Joy Quillan a dark look, then his gaze shifted to Gael Keane.

Joyce Rivers continued to add fuel to the fire. "The Keane Family has always had an upright reputation, and you, Keane, are a decent man. Gael’s temperament, however, isn’t the least bit like yours..."

"Joyce Rivers, shut your mouth!" Joy Quillan frantically grabbed Harold Keane’s arm. "Darling, she’s just trying to sow discord between us! Gael is our son! I’ve never betrayed you!"

Mason Grayson said coldly, "We have no interest in whether he’s your flesh and blood or not. Let’s deal with the matter at hand. Your son set up my daughter. How do you plan to account for that? This isn’t over until we get a satisfactory resolution."

"What do you want?" Harold Keane asked in a heavy voice.

"The Keane Family will resolve the issue with the business approvals. And then, Gael Keane will give my daughter a formal apology."

Harold Keane knew he was in the wrong. With a grim expression, he barked at his son, "Gael, apologize!"

"Dad..."

"Apologize!"

Seething with resentment, Gael Keane could only lower his head. "Vesper, I’m sorry."

With that, the Keane family departed from the Grayson Residence in disgrace.

"Come to my study."

Mason Grayson said before turning and heading upstairs.

"If Gwen hadn’t said anything, were you planning on hiding this from me forever?"

"It was just a small thing. I didn’t expect it to blow up like this."

"Why did you get involved in her project? Weren’t you afraid she’d conspire with outsiders to set you up...?"

"Dad, Gwen is a little spoiled, but she isn’t malicious. She’s also been out in the real world for three years now; she can tell right from wrong."

Mason Grayson was taken aback. "You trust her that much?"

"Yes."

"You’re just too soft-hearted. When you’re out in the world, you have to be more careful."

Vesper Grayson didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. In her father’s eyes, she would always be a child who never grew up.

"Dad, Jared said our two families should get together this Saturday to discuss the engagement..."

"Did he really say that?"

"Yes. I wanted to hear your thoughts on it."

"I have no objections. An engagement is a good thing. It shows that Jared is responsible and trustworthy. I’ll feel at ease entrusting you to him."

Vesper Grayson raised an eyebrow, teasing, "What has he been telling you to make you trust him so much?"

"I’ve met countless people in my life, and I’m a good judge of character. I can tell who’s trustworthy and who has ulterior motives at a glance. Besides, the Hawthorne Family is powerful and influential; they have no reason to be after your bit of wealth."

’Even if something were to happen in the future, as long as his daughter has her own money to fall back on, she won’t end up destitute.’

’He wasn’t entirely ignorant of what she had gone through during those few years in Ashmore; he just didn’t want to reopen old wounds and cause her more pain.’

「Time flew by in a flash.」

「Soon, it was Saturday.」

The meeting was set to take place at the Hawthorne Estate.

During the dinner, Zachary Hawthorne was all smiles.

"Vesper, your aunt and I had someone check for an auspicious date. The middle of next month is perfect. How about we set the engagement for then?"

Vesper gave a faint, demure smile. "I’ll leave the arrangements to Grandpa and Aunt."

"Excellent! Then it’s settled!"

Zachary Hawthorne was in high spirits and downed two glasses with Mason Grayson in celebration.

The rest of the meal was warm and cheerful.

Looking around the magnificent estate, filled with priceless antiques and curios at every turn, Joyce Rivers couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy.

’Vesper Grayson is just too lucky.’

’If only it were Gwen marrying into the Hawthorne Family...’

"Gwen, don’t you worry. Your mother will find a great match for you. I guarantee you’ll marry even better than Vesper," she whispered, trying to console her.

Gwen looked exasperated. "Oh, give me a break. Is there any family in Northolme more powerful than the Hawthornes?"

"Then we’ll look elsewhere."

"You might have the confidence, but I don’t have the talent."

"It’s not like you’re any worse than her..."

"Can you even say that with a straight face?"

"You child! How can you have no ambition at all!"

Gwen simply covered her ears.

’La la la, I can’t hear you...’ she chanted silently in her head.

Sharon Chandler looked at Jared Hawthorne. "Your dad will be back for the engagement."

Jared Hawthorne raised an eyebrow, slightly surprised. "How did you manage to contact him?"

After stepping away from company affairs, his father, Bernard Hawthorne, had become completely engrossed in his geology and paleontology research. It was normal for him to be out of contact for weeks at a time.

"He called me last night, so I mentioned that you were getting engaged," Sharon Chandler said with a smile. "He also said that if you two have a child soon, he’ll come back to Northolme to be a professor and stop traveling all the time."

Hearing this, Zachary Hawthorne’s gentle gaze fell upon Vesper Grayson, and he spoke with a broad smile.

"Vesper, dear, when are you and Elias planning to have children?"

’Here we go again, pressuring us to have kids...’

Several pairs of eyes fell on her all at once.

Vesper said nothing. She quietly tilted her head to look at the man beside her, and under the table, she reached out and gently hooked his finger with her own in a silent plea for help.
