My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable

Chapter 134: Consider Yourself Lucky

Chapter 134: Chapter 134: Consider Yourself Lucky

A subtle tension hid behind his smiling eyes.

Vesper shook her head gently. "I won’t forget the pain he caused me."

She was grateful that Luke Lockwood hadn’t just stood by and let her fall into that trap. But after pouring her heart out for three years, she had nothing left to give.

’At least Luke Lockwood isn’t rotten to the core,’ she thought. ’I suppose loving him so earnestly wasn’t a total waste.’

Jared Hawthorne lowered his eyes, letting out a visible sigh of relief.

"How do you want to handle this?"

Sensing her gaze, he added, "Don’t worry about my relationship with them. That’s a separate issue. Since they’ve done wrong, they must pay the price."

He and Noah were friends, but Vesper was his woman. She was the one person no one could touch.

He would show no mercy to anyone who dared to touch her.

Vesper pursed her lips. "I haven’t decided yet..."

Her head was still spinning from the incident, and she felt a little dazed.

...

An ambulance soon arrived and carried the two of them away on stretchers to the hospital.

Fortunately, it was only the second floor, so the height wasn’t fatal. Although their lives weren’t in danger, they had multiple fractures, and their bodies were covered in scrapes and bruises.

Their hospital rooms were right next to each other, separated by a single wall.

When Sheryl Garland woke up and saw her own battered state, she asked weakly, "Mom, my leg..."

"It’s broken. Just rest and let it heal; you won’t be crippled," Casey Nash said, her voice a mixture of heartache and fury. "You reap what you sow! Why do you never listen?"

She knew her daughter liked Jared Hawthorne. She had thought that once Sheryl saw his heart belonged to someone else, she would back down. But she never expected her to harbor such a vicious scheme.

A young woman’s reputation was so important.

"Mom, I know I was wrong, but I’ve loved Jared for five years. I can’t accept it. Why should she get his love so easily?" Sheryl’s voice was choked with sobs. "Besides her pretty face, what does she have that compares to my family background or education?"

"Love doesn’t follow logic. A better family background, a higher education—none of it matters if he likes her. Can’t you see that by now? Jared Hawthorne likes her for who she is, and she’s far from the useless person you think she is. Is it so hard to admit that someone else is better than you?"

The fact that she could cure Miss Kensington was proof enough of her capabilities.

Smart people always knew how to hide their strengths; they didn’t play all their cards at once.

Sheryl bit her lip, full of resentment. "I can’t believe Mandy Grayson was so useless and screwed everything up. I never should have involved her."

"What more do you want?" Casey Nash’s face darkened, and she scolded in a low voice, "If the Hawthorne Family really decides to pursue this, not even your cousin can protect you. As soon as you’re better, you’re coming back to Caelus with me."

"No... I’m not going back. Nothing even happened to Vesper Grayson. Jared wouldn’t have the heart to punish me." Sheryl gripped her sleeve tightly. "Mom, where’s Jared?"

Just as she finished speaking, the door to the hospital room was pushed open.

Noah Nash walked in. "Aunt, everyone’s here."

The matter had to be resolved. Especially the incident where Sheryl Garland conspired with Mandy Grayson to frame Vesper Grayson. Although the plot had failed, if it blew up, it wouldn’t benefit anyone. It was best to handle it through private negotiation.

"Mom, Cousin, Mandy Grayson was trying to kill me! That was attempted murder! We absolutely can’t let her get away with it!" Sheryl Garland struggled to sit up, but the movement pulled at her wounds. She went pale as a sheet from the pain, her features twisting together.

Noah Nash said coldly, "You need to behave yourself. You started all of this. After we’ve settled things, I’ll deal with you."

...

Vesper had a good night’s sleep.

The events of last night didn’t cause the slightest ripple in her heart.

When she opened her eyes, she was alone in the room.

After she finished dressing, the bedroom door opened and Jared Hawthorne walked in.

The man was tall and slender, in a white shirt and black trousers. His features were deep and well-defined, a pleasant sight at any time of day.

"You didn’t go to the office?"

At this hour, he should have been in his office chair, commanding his empire.

"After breakfast, come with me to the hospital."

Vesper raised an eyebrow. "How are they?"

"Multiple fractures. Their two families already agreed to a settlement last night."

Vesper wasn’t surprised by this outcome.

They were all prominent figures. If a scandal like this became public, it would be a complete loss of face and not worth the trouble. To save face, a private settlement was the most appropriate course of action.

"Did the Garland Family make concessions?"

Jared Hawthorne’s thin lips curved slightly. "Miss Grayson is so clever to have even figured that out."

"Sheryl Garland was the instigator, and Mandy Grayson lost her virtue in the process. If the Garland Family didn’t make a concession and this blew up, their reputation would be ruined, and it would affect Sheryl’s marriage prospects!"

No one would want a vicious, jealous, and narrow-minded woman marrying into their family.

To save face, the Garland Family had no choice but to back down. A woman losing her virtue is hardly a glorious matter. If it blew up, Mandy Grayson could forget about ever getting married.

Vesper rubbed her temples and shot him a glare.

"This is all your fault for being such a heartthrob!"

"How am I to blame?" Jared Hawthorne wrapped an arm around her slim waist, feigning innocence. "I never led her on."

Vesper huffed softly. "It was still because of you."

"You can only blame your man for being too charming."

He and Sheryl Garland barely saw each other once a year. In all the years they’d known each other, they’d only met three times. Who knew the girl had fallen so deeply for him?

"Shameless!"

Vesper ignored him and walked past to wash up. Jared Hawthorne crossed his arms and leaned casually against the doorframe, his gaze resting quietly on her.

She was brushing her teeth, head down, with foam at the corner of her lips. She looked up and met his deep, dark eyes in the mirror. Her heart skipped a beat. She paused, then turned to him, her words muffled by the toothpaste foam.

"What are you looking at me for?"

"You’re my fiancée now. I have every right to look at you," he said with a smile, his tone full of righteous confidence.

"..."

After breakfast, the two of them went to the hospital.

Sheryl Garland was lying alone in bed, staring at the ceiling.

Hearing the door open, she glanced to the side.

Her eyes met the man’s dark gaze first, and a flicker of joy ignited in her heart.

"Jared, are you here to see me?"

The next second, she saw Vesper behind him, and the light in her eyes instantly died.

"Are you here to laugh at me? I didn’t die. You must be disappointed, aren’t you?"

’Even now, her hostility toward me is still so strong.’

Vesper’s gaze swept over her, a look of mock pity on her face. "What a shame. You didn’t die from the fall. I guess you’re lucky."

"You..." Sheryl’s chest heaved violently, but she couldn’t move. All she could do was glare at her, wide-eyed.

Then she turned to Jared, looking aggrieved. "Jared, look at her! She’s actually wishing I were dead! Don’t be fooled by her gentle and quiet appearance, it’s all an act!"

"You brought this on yourself. It would be no great loss if you had died!" Jared Hawthorne’s expression was cold, his gaze terrifyingly grim. "Who gave you the audacity to scheme against my woman?"

Terrified by his grim gaze, Sheryl trembled. Her face turned deathly pale and her lips quivered, unable to form a complete sentence.

Jared Hawthorne’s tone was hard, devoid of any warmth.

"Apologize to her."
