My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable
Chapter 135: Oh No, I’ve Gone Too FarChapter 135: Chapter 135: Oh No, I’ve Gone Too Far
"I..."
Facing his piercing gaze, the word "no" got caught in her throat.
She mumbled reluctantly, "I’m sorry!"
"Who are you apologizing to? Be clear!" Jared Hawthorne’s voice was as cold as ancient ice. "Is this your idea of an apology?"
Vesper Grayson raised an eyebrow. She had never seen him look so stern.
’He really is handsome. Even when he’s angry and scolding someone, he’s uniquely and utterly charming.’
In truth, she didn’t need Sheryl Garland’s apology. What good was a flimsy, half-hearted apology? Especially a forced one—it was completely meaningless.
"Vesper Grayson, I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have set you up, and I definitely shouldn’t have cursed you out!"
’Make me apologize to some woman from a no-name family? As if.’
’If she hadn’t seduced her way into the Hawthorne family’s good graces, she’d be nothing. She isn’t even worthy of talking to me!’
"If ’sorry’ was enough, what would we need the police for?" Vesper Grayson watched her with a half-smile. "Miss Garland, your apology doesn’t sound very sincere. If you don’t want to apologize, there’s no need to force yourself."
"Don’t push your luck!"
"Miss Garland, you incited others to set me up. Even though the attempt failed, legally, it’s considered attempted rape. A rape conviction carries a sentence of three to ten years. While an attempt might get a lighter sentence, you were the mastermind and planner. That means a minimum of three years, and for a severe case, it could be five to seven..."
She paused, her smile widening as she looked at Sheryl Garland’s deathly pale face. "Even if the Garland Family is rich and powerful, they can’t place themselves above the law. With a criminal record, your education, career, and your family’s reputation will all be ruined. Everywhere you go, people will point and stare. You’ll never be able to hold your head up high again."
"No, I don’t want to go to jail! I just wanted to play a joke on you, Vesper Grayson! If you call the police, you’re just doing it for revenge." Sheryl Garland, fighting through the pain, struggled to get up, her face streaked with tears and her eyes full of terror. "Jared, I’m still young. If I go to prison, my whole life will be ruined."
Jared Hawthorne was unmoved. He leaned down and whispered in Vesper’s ear, "Just scare her a little. That’s enough."
’If she really wanted to call the police, she wouldn’t have waited this long.’
"She set me up. Am I not allowed to scare her a little to blow off some steam?"
Sheryl Garland’s struggles jostled her fracture. In a wave of intense pain, her body tilted, and she fell heavily from the bed to the floor. She landed with a dull THUD, adding insult to injury for her already broken bone. The pain immediately sent her into convulsions.
’Oh no! I’ve gone too far.’
Vesper Grayson’s expression tightened. "Go get a doctor."
The doctor arrived quickly. An examination revealed that the fall had aggravated the existing fracture. The situation was critical, and they immediately rushed her back into the operating room.
Casey Nash and Noah Nash rushed over, carrying take-out bags.
Seeing them, Casey Nash stepped forward, an apologetic look on her face.
"Miss Grayson, Sheryl knows she was wrong. We’ll have her apologize to you later, and once she’s recovered, she’ll make it up to you properly!"
"Miss Garland already apologized just now. Perhaps she got a little too emotional," Vesper Grayson coughed lightly. "She accidentally fell off the bed and is now in the emergency room..."
Casey Nash didn’t think too much of it. She just felt like her world was collapsing.
"Aunt, don’t worry. Let’s put this stuff down first." Noah Nash handed the take-out bags to Casey Nash.
Casey Nash responded absently and took the bags into the hospital room.
"What happened?" Noah Nash turned to face them. Given Sheryl Garland’s temperament, how could she possibly have apologized, let alone fallen off the bed?
’Something must have happened that I don’t know about.’
Jared Hawthorne was expressionless. "She did something wrong and didn’t have the right attitude about her apology. I said a few words to her, and the coward fell off the bed on her own."
"What did you say?" Noah Nash asked, curious.
"That if she refused to admit her mistake and apologize sincerely, I’d send her to jail."
"..."
"If Vesper hadn’t come out of this unharmed, I wouldn’t have been so lenient. Noah, you know me. You know my temper. Once I’ve taken a hard line, no one can talk me out of it."
"This was definitely her fault. Once she recovers, I’ll send her back to Caelus and guarantee she will never appear before you again." Noah Nash looked at Vesper Grayson, making his position clear. "As compensation, from now on, you can have lifetime use of any commercial property owned by Nash Corporation in Northolme, and the rent will always be half-price."
’Was this really happening?’
’It was like someone handing me a pillow just as I was getting sleepy.’
She had been looking for a shop recently to expand her business, but the rent for a good location could be as high as a million a year, so she hadn’t decided on a specific spot.
Noah Nash’s words had just solved her most pressing problem.
"President Nash, you’re friends with Elias. You don’t have to pay for what Miss Garland did."
"She’s my cousin. I can’t just stand by and do nothing. For Elias’s sake, I hope Miss Grayson can let this matter rest and not pursue her transgressions any further."
His aunt had raised him since he was a child, and he had practically watched Sheryl Garland be born and grow up. Even if just for his aunt’s sake, he couldn’t stay out of it.
Jared Hawthorne said nonchalantly, "President Nash has made the offer. You should just accept it with a clear conscience. It’s his own fault for having such a ’wonderful’ cousin."
Noah Nash, "..."
’This guy is being sarcastic again.’
’Even at his age, wherever he goes, that face is a menace!’
"How is Mandy Grayson?" Vesper Grayson looked toward the quiet, closed hospital room and asked in a low voice.
Noah Nash frowned. "She was unlucky. The fall injured her brain, and she’s still in a coma. We’ll have to wait until she wakes up to know more."
Although she hadn’t woken up, the Garland family had already reached a settlement with the Graysons the previous night. They would cover all of Mandy Grayson’s medical expenses, and if she didn’t wake up within a month, they would arrange for Mitchell Grayson to join the Chinese Medicine Association.
Vesper Grayson had intended to go see her, but in the end, she dismissed the idea.
Sheryl Garland was wheeled out, still unconscious. She looked utterly miserable.
’I couldn’t stand how arrogant and unapologetic Sheryl Garland was, even after doing something so wrong. I just wanted to say a few harsh words to scare her. I didn’t expect her to be so easily frightened that she’d panic, fall off the bed, and end up with a second fracture.’
She and Jared Hawthorne didn’t stay at the hospital for long. After saying their goodbyes, they left together.
Casey Nash sat by the bed, holding Sheryl Garland’s hand, her heart aching as tears streamed down her face.
"Aunt, please don’t cry! If Sheryl doesn’t learn her lesson this time, she’ll only cause bigger trouble in the future. When that happens, crying won’t solve anything!" Noah Nash placed a hand on her shoulder. "Jared and Miss Grayson aren’t holding her responsible this time. From now on, you have to watch her closely. You can’t let her keep acting so willfully."
"I know..." Casey Nash wiped her tears and looked at him with red-rimmed eyes. "Noah, we really have you to thank for this."
"Aunt, we’re all family. There’s no need for such formalities."
Vesper Grayson returned to her company. She had barely warmed her seat when she got a call from Nancy Linton.
"Vesper, can you have lunch with me? Your Second Aunt has a little something she needs your help with."
