My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable
Chapter 136: A Red Mole on the WaistChapter 136: Chapter 136: A Red Mole on the Waist
Inside the elegant private dining room, warm yellow sunlight streamed in from the window, but it couldn’t disperse the heavy, oppressive atmosphere.
Vesper Grayson gently pushed open the solid wood door and walked in. Nancy Linton was already seated at the dining table, her back ramrod straight, but she couldn’t hide the aura of desolation surrounding her.
Compared to her dignified and graceful appearance at the engagement party, she was now pale, with an unshakeable exhaustion in her eyes. She looked more than just a little haggard; even her normally perfectly coiffed hair was in disarray.
"Aunt Nancy, was there something you wanted to see me about?"
Vesper Grayson walked slowly to the chair beside her and sat down, asking calmly.
Nancy Linton looked up at her, her fingertips tightening slightly on the tablecloth. After a moment of silence, she finally spoke, her voice painfully hoarse.
"Vesper, at the hospital, you must have seen that DNA test report. Aidan Hawthorne... he isn’t my son at all. He’s Kevin Hawthorne’s illegitimate child."
Hearing this, Vesper Grayson instinctively pursed her lips, unsure of how to respond. This was ultimately the internal affair of the Hawthorne family’s second branch, and a complicated one at that. Although she was engaged to Jared Hawthorne, she had yet to officially marry into the family and shouldn’t get involved so recklessly.
She didn’t understand why Nancy Linton had come to her for help.
"He’s been lying to me for over twenty years..." Nancy Linton suddenly reached out and gripped Vesper’s hand tightly. Her fingertips were ice-cold, and her grip was so strong it nearly dug into Vesper’s skin as her emotions flared. "I suspect he’s the one who stole my real son! He did it to make room for his son with that other woman! I’ve been foolishly raising someone else’s child all these years. I can’t imagine how they’ve been laughing at me behind my back. My whole life has been a joke!"
Her voice trembled uncontrollably, her eyes filled with grief, indignation, and despair. "All these years, I’ve had people searching everywhere for my son, but there’s been no news at all. I have no other choice, which is why I came to you... Can you talk to Jared for me? Please, ask him to help me find my child?"
Whether he was alive or dead, she had to know.
All she wanted was to know what had become of him!
Vesper was taken aback for a moment, then asked softly, "Why don’t you speak to Elias directly?"
"He’s never liked to meddle in these kinds of affairs, and besides, Kevin Hawthorne is his own uncle..." Nancy Linton’s eyes filled with worry, her tone bitter. "I’m afraid that out of family loyalty, he’ll side with Kevin and refuse to help me."
She could see it clearly: Jared Hawthorne cared deeply for Vesper Grayson. He would definitely help if Vesper was the one asking.
Even if Aidan Hawthorne was illegitimate, he was still of the Hawthorne bloodline. Her own son, however, was still missing, his fate unknown. In the eyes of the Hawthorne Family, how could a child who might be dead compare to a living, breathing descendant they had raised by their side?
Vesper Grayson pondered for a moment, her expression serious. "Aunt Nancy, when you gave birth back then, did the baby have any obvious birthmarks or special markings? Without any distinguishing features, finding him in a sea of people would be like finding a needle in a haystack."
"Yes! Yes, he did!" Nancy Linton seemed to be grasping at her last straw. Her eyes instantly reddened as she choked out, "I remember after I gave birth, the doctor brought him over for me to see. On the side of his waist, there was a small red mole. I had just gone through labor and was so tired... I only glanced at him briefly before I passed out..."
At this, she was overcome with regret, and tears finally streamed down her face. "If I had known Kevin Hawthorne would do something to my child, I would never have closed my eyes, not for a second!"
When she woke up, Kevin Hawthorne told her the baby had been stolen. In that moment, she felt as if her world had collapsed, and everything turned grey.
After that, she was depressed day in and day out. Her postpartum recovery was a disaster, and her health completely broke down. But only now did she understand that during that time, Kevin Hawthorne’s apparent gentle comfort was all an act. Behind her back, he had already run into the arms of Shirley Langley. And she had been kept in the dark the whole time, like a complete fool, trapped in the cage of lies Kevin had carefully woven for over twenty years.
’A red mole on the side of his waist...’
Vesper’s heart suddenly jolted. A fleeting fragment of an image flashed through the depths of her mind, so fast she couldn’t catch it, leaving only a strange sense of familiarity that stirred up a storm of complex emotions.
She suppressed the strange feeling in her heart and asked with a grave expression, "Do your husband and Aidan know that you’ve discovered the truth?"
Nancy Linton slowly shook her head. "Not yet. I don’t dare tip them off. If they realize I know, I’m afraid they’ll do something to harm my son."
After living in a daze for so many years, deceived for most of her life, she couldn’t afford to be a fool any longer. She had to find her child and get justice.
"Don’t worry too much," Vesper Grayson said, gently squeezing her hand back with a firm tone. "I’ll talk to Elias about this as soon as possible. As the heir to the Hawthorne Family, he would never stand by and let a true child of the family wander adrift."
After the meal, Nancy Linton went to the front desk to pay the bill, while Vesper Grayson went outside to wait for her.
Standing by the roadside, she finished replying to a work message on her phone. As she looked up, her gaze inadvertently fell upon the other side of the street, and she froze.
Aidan Hawthorne was walking slowly forward, his arm linked intimately with that of a middle-aged woman.
The woman wore no makeup, her features gentle. Her face bore a slight resemblance to Aidan’s. They walked side by side, talking and laughing, appearing completely at ease with each other.
’Could that woman be Aidan’s biological mother, Kevin Hawthorne’s lover, Shirley Langley?’
’If so, does that mean Aidan has known his true identity all along and has already reunited with his biological mother?’
’Nancy Linton poured her heart and soul into raising him as her own son for all these years, only to be deceived by both father and son. She spent decades raising her rival’s child—all her effort was for someone else’s benefit.’
’If Nancy Linton were to see this with her own eyes, how devastated would she be?’
Vesper’s heart tightened. As she turned, her body abruptly froze.
At some point, Nancy Linton had silently appeared behind her. Her gaze was fixed directly across the street, taking in the intimate sight of the pair.
Her eyes instantly turned red, welling with tears. Her face was as white as a sheet, her lips colorless. She swayed on her feet, looking as if she might collapse at any second.
"Aunt Nancy, are you all right?" Vesper quickly moved to support her arm, sighing heavily in her heart.
’How could she have seen them?’
"I’m fine. Come on, let’s go take a closer look."
Nancy Linton gently pushed her hand away. Her voice was as soft as a wisp of smoke, yet it carried the determination of someone with nothing left to lose. She started walking straight toward the other side of the street, as if torturing herself, needing to see the cruel scene before her with her own eyes.
’The son she had doted on, carefully nurtured, and raised for over twenty years had played her for a fool, just like his father. He’d reunited with his biological mother behind her back. Who knows how many times he’d met with Shirley Langley? What did they take her for?’
Watching her frail back, Vesper was filled with worry and could only hurry to catch up.
The two of them followed Aidan Hawthorne and Shirley Langley across three streets, finally stopping at the entrance of The Bloom Room, an elegant flower shop.
