My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable
Chapter 138: Such a Lively Discussion?Chapter 138: Chapter 138: Such a Lively Discussion?
People like that are utterly shameless, worse than vultures.
It was the type of man she despised the most.
"It was a marriage of convenience, arranged by the elders of both families," Jared Hawthorne said, his tone flat. "My second uncle was already in love with someone else back then, but the woman was from a humble background. She wasn’t good enough for Grandfather Hawthorne, so of course he refused to approve the match."
"What?" Vesper Grayson was taken aback. "So Grandfather Hawthorne broke them up?"
"Not entirely. Grandfather gave him two choices: one, leave the Hawthorne Family, strike out on his own, marry the woman he loved, and cut all ties with us forever; or two, sever his relationship with Shirley Langley and marry Nancy Linton. In the end, my uncle chose the latter."
"So he’s nothing more than a complete and utter egoist."
"He’s always been shrewd. He knew that if he left the Hawthorne Family and lost his title as the second young master, he’d have nothing. But no one ever imagined he was only pretending to break up with her. He secretly kept Shirley Langley on the side, and she and my aunt got pregnant at nearly the same time. In the end, he orchestrated a whole scheme to switch the babies."
A mix of emotions churned inside Vesper Grayson. "How can a man share a bed with his wife for so many years without having any feelings for her? You men... you’re all so hypocritical and frightening."
A vein throbbed in Jared Hawthorne’s temple. He sighed. "Miss Grayson, don’t paint all of us with the same brush. I’m not like them."
"My apologies, it just slipped out. I’m sure President Hawthorne is nothing like those vulgar men." Vesper Grayson’s tone shifted, a smile playing in her eyes. "So, my dear President Hawthorne, are you going to help your aunt with this or not?"
"I’ve already had someone look into it. I’ll let you know when I have news."
’He moves that fast?’
"When did you arrange that?"
"The last time you ran into Nancy Linton at the hospital and told me about it, I ordered my men to start looking for the child’s whereabouts."
’He was his cousin, after all. Hawthorne blood!’
"I never would have guessed. President Hawthorne seems as cold as ice on the outside, but you’re actually quite warm-hearted." After her little jab, she lifted her hand to check her phone. "I can’t talk anymore. Shiloh is calling me."
When she arrived at The Belrose, Shiloh Sloan was already waiting by the side of the road.
Seeing her car approach, Shiloh immediately rushed over and linked her arm through Vesper’s affectionately.
"Bonnie, you’re finally here."
Shiloh Sloan’s gaze swept over her, and she frowned slightly. "You’re not going to change?"
"No need. It’s not like I’m going on a blind date. It doesn’t matter what I wear."
Vesper’s gaze fell back on her friend, a smile deepening in her eyes. Shiloh had clearly put a lot of effort into her appearance. Her outfit was sultry and form-fitting, accentuating every one of her exquisite curves. Her black hair was styled into loose, French-girl waves, and her makeup was bold and captivating. She exuded an alluring charm with every step.
Vesper raised an eyebrow, teasing, "Dressed to the nines tonight. Looks like you really went all out."
’This silly girl. She says she doesn’t care, but it’s obvious she still can’t forget her first love.’
"No, I didn’t. I just felt like trying a new style," Shiloh Sloan retorted, her cheeks flushing slightly as she feigned composure.
"Who do you think is better, Mr. Five Million or Nolan Forrester?"
Shiloh Sloan froze.
"They’re not even in the same league! If we’re just talking about looks, Mr. Five Million is definitely hotter. But he’s a con artist! Thankfully, I stood my ground and didn’t let him swindle my heart *or* my body."
"I remember after Nolan Forrester left without a word, you cried your eyes out every day, like you were made of water. You still can’t get over him, can you? Why else would you have been single all these years?"
"Vesper, he was my first love. It’s different. It’s impossible to forget him completely." Shiloh’s dark lashes lowered, hiding the pain in her eyes. "I just want to see him one more time, clear up the misunderstanding. Anything else... I’m not going to force it."
Just as the two of them reached the door of the private room, the sound of chatter and laughter drifted through the gap, every word crystal clear.
"Nolan, I never thought you’d actually end up with Campus Belle Summers."
"Well, Campus Belle Summers finally got her wish. Back in college, if it weren’t for Shiloh Sloan pestering him relentlessly, you two would have gotten together ages ago."
"Shiloh Sloan chased Nolan for so long, and then she did something that shameless in the end. She’s a disgrace to all women."
"It was a wise move for Nolan to break up with her and go abroad with Campus Belle Summers back then."
Just then, a soft, delicate voice chimed in, laced with a coy shyness that feigned magnanimity.
"Alright, that’s all in the past. Let’s not bring it up again. The fact that Nolan and I are together is fate."
"As for Shiloh Sloan, she’s the one who didn’t know how to cherish what she had. Speaking of which, I should probably thank her. If it weren’t for her, Nolan and I wouldn’t be where we are today."
As she finished speaking, she coyly lifted her gaze to the tall, well-postured man beside her.
Nolan Forrester’s fingertips traced the rim of his wine glass. He remained silent, giving no indication of whether he was unconcerned or tacitly agreeing with what everyone was saying.
Shiloh Sloan’s heart suddenly clenched, and the tips of her fingers went pale.
’Back then, Nolan Forrester was the one who said he liked her first. Only then did she offer him her whole, sincere heart, holding nothing back.’
’In the past, if anyone said a single bad word about her, Nolan Forrester would be the first to stand up and protect her. He doted on her completely. She still remembered the time a boy had criticized her, and Nolan, without a second thought, had rushed over and beaten him up mercilessly.’
’He knew what kind of person she was. He knew she could never have done those disgusting things. Yet in the end, he left without a single word, without so much as a goodbye.’
’He had unilaterally declared their breakup.’
’It was only later that she found out the reason he left was to go abroad with Summer.’
’And now, the two of them were together, open for all the world to see.’
"I specifically invited her to this reunion so she could see reality and understand that you two are a match made in heaven!" said the class monitor, Jason Rivers, his tone dripping with unconcealed malice.
"You guys probably don’t know this, but Shiloh Sloan has a terrible reputation now. I heard she was involved with her stepfather. To win his favor, she had her own mother committed to a psychiatric hospital. And then, to get her hands on the family fortune, she had her stepfather sent to prison."
"Oh my god, she’s that vicious? It’s a good thing Nolan didn’t get trapped by her back then."
"So shameless. She’ll sleep with anyone. She has no self-respect at all!"
’So they were all just waiting to see her make a fool of herself!’
Shiloh Sloan was trembling with rage. Vesper Grayson gently squeezed her hand.
"Don’t listen to what they’re saying. Why don’t we just leave? A reunion like this isn’t worth attending anyway."
"No, why should I leave? I’m not the one who did anything wrong." Shiloh clenched her fists, her eyes red. "Vesper, I’m not that fragile. Their words can’t hurt me."
’Besides, she had come today to settle the score!’
Vesper looked worried. "What are you going to do? I can..."
"I don’t need your help. You just sit back and watch the show today!"
Shiloh took a moment to compose herself, then kicked the door open and strode in brazenly, with Vesper Grayson right behind her.
"Such a lively discussion? Looks like I’ve arrived just in time."
