My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable
Chapter 139: Who Do You Say Set Me Up?Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Who Do You Say Set Me Up?
The people in the private room were laughing and chatting when the door was gently pushed open.
The noise died down instantly as everyone subconsciously turned to look.
Jason Rivers’s eyes lit up. He quickly stood and spoke tentatively.
"Hello, beauties. Who are you looking for?"
Shiloh Sloan’s makeup was heavy and her clothes were fiery. A mane of lazy French curls framed her face, making her utterly unrecognizable from the shy, unremarkable girl she’d been in college. Not a single person in the room knew who she was.
And beside her stood Vesper Grayson, whose aura was cold and stunningly beautiful. Her features were exquisite and captivating—a beauty that was both pure and intensely aggressive.
One fiery, one cold. The two women, with their starkly different yet equally dazzling styles, stood side by side, leaving everyone momentarily stunned.
"Vesper Grayson?"
Someone immediately recognized her. She had been a prominent figure back in school, an unattainable beauty. Though they were classmates, they had almost no interaction with her.
With her high IQ and top grades, she was always by the professors’ side, spending most of her time in the lab. She was never seen at regular gatherings.
The others were stunned. They never expected this campus goddess to show up at a class reunion.
’Who has that much pull, to get her to come?’
Vesper Grayson gave a slight nod, her tone laced with nonchalance.
"I was listening outside the door for a bit. I didn’t realize that after all these years, my classmates’ habit of gossiping hasn’t changed at all."
The smiles on everyone’s faces froze instantly.
Only then did they belatedly recall that Vesper Grayson and Shiloh Sloan had been best friends in college.
’That shameless Shiloh Sloan... it was bad enough she was always clinging to guys back then, but she even pestered the girls. It’s just disgusting.’
Jason Rivers quickly tried to smooth things over, letting out a dry laugh.
"Vesper, we were just joking around. Come on in, have a seat."
Vesper Grayson’s gaze landed directly on Nolan Forrester, who had been silent the whole time, and she spoke coolly.
"Nolan Forrester, do you also think what they’re saying is true?"
Nolan Forrester’s jaw tensed. His gaze fell upon the slender, fiery figure beside her, his eyes dark with an unreadable, complex emotion.
"No."
Summer’s head snapped up to look at him, a flash of panic and confusion in her eyes.
The others also looked surprised, their expressions varied. ’Could it be? Is Nolan Forrester not over Shiloh Sloan?’
They quickly dismissed the thought. If he truly believed her, he wouldn’t have left without a word back then, and he certainly wouldn’t be with Summer now.
Jason Rivers hurried to ease the tension, smiling at Vesper Grayson.
"Hey Vesper, weren’t you and Shiloh Sloan pretty close back in the day? Didn’t you two come together?"
"Class Rep, are your eyes just for show?" Shiloh Sloan scoffed. "I’ve been standing here for ages. If your eyes are useless, you might as well gouge them out and kick them into a cesspit."
"You... You’re Shiloh Sloan?" Jason Rivers’s eyes widened as he stared at her in disbelief.
Everyone else was also shocked, completely stunned.
The change was too drastic!
They hadn’t recognized her at all.
Someone immediately spoke up in a passive-aggressive tone.
"Shiloh Sloan, don’t tell me you got plastic surgery?"
"You’re one to talk." Shiloh Sloan raised an eyebrow, retorting without hesitation. "Your nose is sharp enough to poke someone’s eye out, and your face is so stiff you look like you injected a pound of Botox. You can barely even talk naturally. Why don’t you worry about yourself first?"
"You’re lying! I didn’t!"
"Whether you did or not, you know best."
Summer spoke in a soft, gentle voice.
"Shiloh, Luna Hughes was just making a casual comment. Why do you have to be so aggressive, like you’re spoiling for a fight?"
"She was talking about her, not you, right?" Shiloh Sloan sneered, her gaze sweeping over Summer with undisguised ridicule. "I remember you used to be scrawny as a beanpole. That chest you have now... I bet it’s a product of high-tech, isn’t it?"
As she spoke, she lifted her chin slightly and puffed out her chest, her posture proud, her tone bold and confident.
"Unlike me. I’m all-natural, born beautiful."
Cornered, Summer’s face paled and flushed by turns. Her eyes reddened slightly, but she forced a gentle look and bit her lip.
"Of course I can’t compare to you, Shiloh. You have someone to dote on you, to cherish you. So carefully nurtured by a man... no wonder your figure is so full, completely different from in college."
"Oh? Did you see him?" Shiloh Sloan sneered. "Summer, you can eat whatever you want, but you can’t just say whatever you want."
"Am I just saying things? Back then, everyone saw it..." Summer looped her arm through Nolan Forrester’s, looking smug and triumphant. "You probably don’t know yet, but Nolan and I are together now. We’ll be getting engaged soon."
’She thought she didn’t care, but hearing that Nolan Forrester was going to get engaged to Summer, the person she hated most, her heart still ached with a dull, involuntary pain.’
Shiloh Sloan looked calmly at Nolan Forrester. The hand at her side clenched into a fist, but she spoke in a nonchalant tone.
"What’s there to show off? You’re just picking up my sloppy seconds. Only you would treat him like a treasure."
Summer’s face went deathly pale in an instant, and her eyes immediately reddened as if she were about to burst into tears.
"Shiloh, how could you talk about him like that? Like he’s just some object... I know you can’t let him go, but you can’t force matters of the heart. You don’t have to degrade him like this."
Her tearful, damsel-in-distress act instantly earned her the sympathy of the other classmates, who all began to attack Shiloh Sloan.
"Shiloh Sloan, you’ve gone too far! If you hadn’t been such a slut and seduced Nolan, why would he have ever slept with you?"
"Exactly! If it weren’t for her slutty tricks, how could Nolan have been so foolish as to be deceived by her?"
"She did something so shameless, and now she’s acting proud of it!"
"If I were you, I’d be too ashamed to even show my face."
Summer couldn’t help but curve her lips into a smirk, shooting Shiloh a secret, provocative glance.
"Oh?" Her gaze was fixed on the man across from her. "Nolan Forrester, if you’re a man, then tell them. Back then, did you seduce me, or did I bewitch you?"
Nolan’s eyes were dark. "I bewitched you. I was completely willing."
The room instantly fell into a dead silence.
Vesper raised an eyebrow. ’At least he’s man enough to admit it,’ she thought.
Shiloh had thought he wouldn’t answer, or that he would ignore her question entirely. She never expected him to actually admit it.
"So... why did you betray me back then?" Nolan’s dark eyes locked onto her, devoid of any warmth as he shot the question at her.
Everyone looked at each other, speechless.
’What is going on? This isn’t how we thought things were at all.’
’Don’t tell me Nolan Forrester actually liked Shiloh Sloan back then, and their feelings were mutual?’
"Is there any point in asking that now?" A bitter sting filled Shiloh’s nose. Back then, he had left without a word. She couldn’t find him, couldn’t contact him. The sense of grievance was like a primordial flood, threatening to drown her. She had been depressed for a very long time.
Later, her stepfather started lusting after her, and her mother misunderstood and blamed her. She fought her battles alone, holding on by herself. Only Vesper stood by her side from beginning to end.
Nolan said, enunciating each word, "To me, it’s very important."
’Back then, he had walked in on her lying with another man. He was devastated, and with pressure from his elders... he chose to leave without a word.’
Shiloh said angrily, "What kind of person do you think I am? Don’t you know me? I was fucking set up!"
"Nolan, don’t be so quick to believe her," Summer said, tugging on his sleeve. "If she wasn’t willing, why would she have gone to the hotel on her own?"
"That’s because someone sent me a message saying you wanted to meet me at the hotel. The moment I entered the room, I was knocked unconscious. When I woke up, you all were there to catch me ’cheating’! What a coincidence."
Shiloh sneered, her sharp gaze landing on Summer. "So tell me, who do you think set me up?"
