My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable
Chapter 143: Great Shot, Double the BonusChapter 143: Chapter 143: Great Shot, Double the Bonus
「The next day, after breakfast.」
Maxim Chandler drove to pick them up and take them to White Horse Manor.
This was one of Jared Hawthorne’s private properties. Surrounded by forest, its environment was serene and secluded, and it even had its own riding stable.
In his leisure time, he often came here to ride horses, drink tea, and relax.
The manor housed several fine thoroughbreds, but the most treasured among them was the Ferghana Horse that Zachary Hawthorne had gifted him on his tenth birthday.
Just as the car entered the manor grounds, a pure white steed came galloping toward them. Its coat was as glossy and smooth as frost-kissed snow, shimmering with a silken luster in the sunlight. With a slender, proud build and nimble hooves, it moved with a fierce yet elegant power—a truly magnificent creature.
Vesper Grayson’s gaze was instantly captivated, and she couldn’t help but murmur in admiration, "How beautiful."
Jared Hawthorne’s lips curved up slightly. "You have good taste. Her name is Sylvia Bell. She’s a pure-white, purebred Ferghana Horse."
"It’s like she knew you were here."
Maxim Chandler chimed in at the right moment. "Sylvia Bell is very intelligent; she recognizes President Hawthorne’s car. But she has a fierce temperament. Growing up, she’s only ever been close to President Hawthorne."
The last time a guest visited the manor, they rashly tried to pet Sylvia Bell and had three ribs broken on the spot.
The most exquisitely beautiful things are often accompanied by fatal danger.
The car came to a stop, and Jared Hawthorne opened the door and got out.
Sylvia Bell immediately slowed her pace and trotted obediently to him, gently nuzzling her head against his arm. She was affectionate and dependent, showing none of her usual wildness or hostility toward strangers.
He raised a hand to stroke the silky, satin-like white hair on the horse’s neck. His dark eyes held a faint smile as he turned his head toward the car. "Vesper, come here."
Vesper Grayson pursed her lips, then got out of the car and walked over.
"This is Sylvia Bell. She was a tenth-birthday gift from my grandfather. I’ve raised her for twenty years. To me, she’s family," he said, his voice low and tinged with a rare indulgence. Then, he tilted his chin toward the white horse. "Remember this. This is Vesper Grayson. She’s my person."
As if she understood, Sylvia Bell raised her long neck, lifted her head, and let out a clear, long whinny. Then she stood quietly to the side, lowering her head to nibble calmly on the green grass, appearing docile and well-behaved.
"So she’s already twenty years old." Vesper Grayson was slightly surprised, her eyes still filled with unconcealed amazement. "She’s so beautiful. Can I pet her?"
As she spoke, she reached her hand out toward Sylvia Bell.
"Miss Grayson, don’t—"
"Vesper—"
Jared Hawthorne’s and Maxim Chandler’s warnings stopped short.
The two men stared, stunned and utterly surprised by the scene before them.
Vesper Grayson’s fingertips gently landed on the soft fur of Sylvia Bell’s neck. Not only did the horse not flinch, but she even tilted her head slightly, docilely allowing Vesper to stroke her. She was as compliant as a large dog being petted, showing not a trace of her usual ferocity.
"What were you about to say?" she asked, turning back to look at them in confusion.
Maxim Chandler rubbed the tip of his nose and gave an awkward smile. "Nothing. It seems she likes you a lot."
’The last time my hand just itched to touch her, I was nearly kicked.’
’Like master, like horse. They even have the exact same preferences.’
Jared Hawthorne’s thin lips curved into a slight smile. He said to Sylvia Bell, "Good girl. I’ll have someone get you extra food for lunch."
Although Jared Hawthorne had raised her for twenty years, he sometimes couldn’t control her wild nature. If she didn’t like something, even his words were useless.
In his eyes, Sylvia Bell was his family and friend, never just a domesticated animal.
Vesper Grayson thought the horse was simply magnificent. She couldn’t resist taking out her phone and handing it over. "Elias, help me take a picture with Sylvia Bell."
Jared Hawthorne took it and tossed it to Maxim Chandler. "Take a picture of us."
Maxim Chandler, the tool, was left speechless.
He naturally wrapped an arm around Vesper Grayson’s waist, standing shoulder to shoulder with Sylvia Bell.
Maxim Chandler took several shots from different angles before handing the phone back to her.
"Miss Grayson, I’m no professional. Please don’t mind if the photos aren’t great."
Vesper Grayson scrolled through the photos. The composition of each one was perfect, even capturing the scenery behind them. Her eyes curved as she smiled. "They’re wonderful! Assistant Chandler, your photography skills are so good, you could change careers and become a professional photographer."
Maxim Chandler was flattered and quickly laughed. "You’re too kind. It’s mainly because you and President Hawthorne are so photogenic."
Jared Hawthorne glanced at the screen and raised an eyebrow. "They are quite good. Double your bonus this month."
Maxim Chandler froze for a second, then beamed. "Thank you, President Hawthorne! I would do anything for you!"
"Look at you, getting so worked up over nothing," Jared Hawthorne’s lips curled as he teased him casually.
Standing to the side, Vesper Grayson couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh.
"Jared."
A voice called out from not too far away.
With his arm still around Vesper Grayson, Jared Hawthorne walked over and asked, "Are you settling in alright?"
"Yes, it’s great. The environment is serene, the air is clean... it’s a good place," Tristan Forrester replied. His gaze then shifted to Sylvia Bell, who was grazing on the lawn, and a hint of admiration crossed his eyes. "This Ferghana Horse of yours is a true masterpiece among horses, priceless. It’s just that her temper is foul and her wild nature is hard to tame."
Hearing this, Jared Hawthorne let out a low laugh. "Her discerning taste in people is what makes her worthy of being by my side."
"To be wild but still willing to recognize a master—that’s what makes a creature intelligent. One in a million," Tristan Forrester said with a smile. "Are you willing to part with her?"
"A gentleman does not take what another man treasures. Besides, Sylvia Bell was a birthday gift from my grandfather," Jared Hawthorne said with a smirk. "But if you see any other fine horses you like, you can pick one to take with you."
"In that case, I won’t be polite."
After speaking, Tristan Forrester looked at Vesper Grayson. "Miss Grayson, my grandfather is in his room. I’ll have to trouble you for the next little while."
"Not at all, Mr. Forrester."
She picked up her medical case and headed upstairs.
Patriarch Forrester was lying on a deck chair on the balcony, sunbathing. Hearing the noise, he opened his eyes and looked over.
His eyes instantly lit up.
"Vesper, you’re here."
Vesper Grayson nodded slightly. "How have you been feeling lately?"
"After you gave me acupuncture last time, I felt a bit better, but for the past few days, my legs have been feeling off again."
"That’s to be expected. Effective treatment requires continuous sessions and a full course of therapy. The meridians in your legs have been blocked for years, restricting the flow of qi and blood. This isn’t something that can be cleared overnight. The recovery process must be gradual; it requires time to gently nourish and unblock the channels. It can’t be rushed."
"Now that you put it that way, I feel relieved." Grandpa Forrester sighed, a look of reassurance on his face.
While sterilizing the silver needles, Vesper Grayson spoke in a gentle voice, "This course of treatment is divided into four stages. Right now, I will begin the second stage."
An hour later, Vesper Grayson slowly removed the silver needles, wiped them clean, and put them away. She turned and instructed, "From now on, I will come over to perform acupuncture every two days. You must take your medicine on schedule without fail."
"Alright, I’ll do whatever you say." Grandpa Forrester nodded repeatedly, readily agreeing.
Seeing the old man’s kind expression, Vesper Grayson asked in a warm voice, "Are there any favorite foods you have? I can bring you some to satisfy your cravings when I come back in two days."
"Anything is fine. I’m not a picky eater; I can eat anything," Grandpa Forrester said with a smile, waving his hand dismissively.
"It’s good that you’re not picky. That means your digestive system is healthy and you have a strong constitution." Vesper Grayson’s eyes curved into crescents as she chuckled softly. "Then I’ll just pick something out for you."
Hearing footsteps, Jared Hawthorne and Tristan Forrester immediately stopped their conversation and both turned to look at her.
"Is the treatment finished?"
"Yes, it just ended."
"How did it go?"
Jared Hawthorne smoothly poured a glass of warm water and handed it to her. Vesper Grayson took it, sipped it to wet her throat, and then looked up at Tristan Forrester.
"Barring any unforeseen issues, Grandpa Forrester should be able to stand up and walk normally again in two months."
Tristan Forrester couldn’t hide his excitement. "Miss Grayson, are you serious?"
"Yes." Vesper Grayson nodded lightly, her tone certain.
Tristan Forrester suppressed the surge of emotion in his heart and spoke with great sincerity.
"I just heard from Jared that you recently secured the agency rights for Vaudin. Coincidentally, I have several vacant storefronts in prime locations in Portclyde. If you’re interested in expanding your business to Portclyde, I can help."
