Chapter 144: Chapter 144: Episodic Amnesia
After finishing lunch at the manor, Jared Hawthorne and Vesper Grayson got in the car and left.
Sylvia Bell trotted all the way to the gate to see them off. Vesper Grayson watched her, her eyes filled with reluctance to leave.
"We’ll come see her again in a couple of days. If you really can’t bear to part with her, we can get a spacious villa next time and bring her over to keep you company."
"Okay."
...
When the company’s lunch break ended, Dolly Hughes pushed open the door and walked into the office.
"Sister Vesper, a Mr. Mitchell Grayson would like to see you."
’Mandy Grayson’s older brother? What’s he doing here?’
Vesper Grayson pondered for a moment, then said lightly, "Show him up."
"Yes, ma’am."
A short while later, Mitchell Grayson pushed the door open and entered.
"Mr. Grayson, please have a seat."
Dolly Hughes prepared two cups of coffee and placed them in front of them. Once they were alone in the office, Mitchell Grayson spoke with a solemn expression.
"Miss Grayson, I’m here to apologize to you on my sister’s behalf."
Vesper Grayson’s gaze was calm. "Were you involved as well, Mr. Grayson?"
Mitchell Grayson clearly hadn’t expected her to ask that and quickly shook his head. "No, I had no prior knowledge of the things Mandy did."
"In that case, there’s no need for you to apologize on her behalf, Mr. Grayson. The one who did wrong should be the one to apologize personally."
"My sister is still in a coma. The doctor said that if she doesn’t wake up by tomorrow morning, her chance of waking up is only one percent."
"Then we’ll talk after she wakes up."
Mitchell Grayson was taken aback. "If Mandy can wake up, I will personally drag her here to apologize to you in person."
"An insincere apology is worthless. Instead of spending your time here, Mr. Grayson, you’d be better off keeping a close eye on her. Don’t let her out to bite people again. Hurting someone is a minor issue, but if the entire Grayson Family gets implicated because of her, it won’t be worth the price. I imagine you don’t want to be dragged down by her either."
Vesper Grayson paused briefly before continuing, "I’ve heard that in your generation of the Grayson Family, you are the most talented, yet you’ve always hidden your abilities for Mandy Grayson’s sake. I can understand doting on your sister, but indulgence and spoiling can sometimes be a double-edged sword."
"I understand." Mitchell Grayson’s expression was complex. He hadn’t expected this Miss Grayson to be not only stunningly beautiful but also incredibly sharp and perceptive.
Before leaving, he looked at Vesper Grayson with an exceptionally serious expression. "Miss Grayson, are you truly... the disciple of the Saint of Medicine?"
"No."
She wasn’t lying. Her grandfather was her grand-master’s disciple. She had never formally become a disciple herself; it was merely by a twist of fate that she had received her grand-master’s lifelong legacy.
Heaven was merciful. At dawn the next day, Mandy Grayson woke up.
But although she was conscious, the head trauma left a side effect—amnesia. She had completely forgotten everything she had done and all the nightmares she had experienced over the past six months.
Sometimes, forgetting isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It can be a blessing.
To avoid a chance encounter with Sheryl Garland at the hospital, the Grayson Family decided to take Mandy Grayson abroad to recuperate in three days.
Before they left, Mitchell Grayson, pushing Mandy Grayson in a wheelchair, met with Vesper Grayson.
In a café that afternoon, Mitchell Grayson and Vesper Grayson sat across from each other. Mandy Grayson sat in her wheelchair to the side, looking at them with a bright smile.
"Brother, is this pretty lady someone you like?"
Her eyes were pure and clear, without a trace of the resentment and hostility from before, as if they were meeting for the first time.
"Mandy, don’t talk nonsense. This is..." Mitchell Grayson was at a loss for words, unsure how to introduce her.
Vesper Grayson smoothly picked up the conversation. "I’m a friend of your brother’s. I heard you injured your head, Miss Grayson. Do you remember anything?"
"I don’t remember." She raised a hand to touch her head, a hint of confusion in her eyes. "My brother said I was in a car accident and that’s how I hurt my head."
Just then, a server brought over a scoop of ice cream. Mitchell Grayson took it and handed it to Mandy Grayson, then shot a meaningful look at the attendant who was with them. The woman immediately came forward and wheeled Mandy away to play elsewhere.
"Miss Grayson, I had originally planned to have Mandy apologize to you personally after she woke up. But as you can see, she doesn’t remember anything."
"What did the doctor say?"
"The CT scan showed no blood clots. It was likely caused by immense psychological trauma, leading to selective amnesia."
Vesper Grayson was slightly surprised. She said softly, "Forgetting bad memories isn’t necessarily a bad thing. A change of environment might be better for her."
"Yes." Mitchell Grayson gazed at the figure happily eating ice cream not far away, his eyes gentle. "I actually quite like her like this now—innocent, straightforward, wanting for nothing. I just hope she can stay this way forever. Last time, you said that my kindness to her was just spoiling her, and I don’t deny it. Our mother passed away early, and I raised Mandy myself. I used to think that giving her the best of everything was what was best for her. Only now do I understand that she doesn’t need to be exceptional. Being safe and happy is enough."
Vesper Grayson lifted her teacup and took a small sip. "Miss Grayson is lucky to have a brother like you."
"Thank you."
"Do you plan to live abroad with her long-term, Mr. Grayson?"
"Yes. I’ve turned down President Nash’s recommendation for me to join the Medical Association and asked him for some funds instead. I’ll be accompanying Mandy to settle in New Zealand."
"Does your grandfather approve?"
"My grandfather will be going with us as well."
"That’s good. I wish you a safe journey."
After parting ways with Mitchell Grayson, Vesper Grayson went to the hospital alone.
Lately, she’d had a poor appetite and frequently felt nauseous in the mornings. She had taken her own pulse, and the signs indicated she was pregnant, but she still wanted to get an ultrasound to be sure.
"Congratulations, you’re five weeks pregnant."
Vesper Grayson stared blankly at the examination screen, unable to process it for a moment.
She had been secretly wondering why nothing had happened yet, but now that she was actually pregnant, she felt a little lost and overwhelmed.
Leaving the consultation room, she was still in a daze, her steps unsteady.
Standing in the bustling hallway, the noisy chatter of the crowd slowly pulled her back to reality.
She put away the ultrasound report and was walking towards the elevators when Casey Nash’s voice suddenly came from behind her.
"Vesper?"
Vesper Grayson turned her head. "Nash."
Casey Nash had a complicated look on her face. "Are you not feeling well?"
’The direction she just came from was clearly the obstetrics and gynecology department. Could it be...’
"Oh, I’ve had some stomach discomfort lately, so I came to get a scan."
"How were the results?"
"Everything’s normal. I was just overthinking things."
Casey Nash pulled her over to a nearby bench to sit, sighing softly. "Vesper, Sheryl was foolish and caused you a lot of trouble."
"How is she?"
"She’s recovering quite well. I heard Mandy Grayson has amnesia and has already gone to New Zealand." Casey Nash sighed. "In another week, I plan to send Sheryl to Caelus."
Vesper Grayson gave a faint smile and didn’t respond.
Although she had been lucky enough to escape this time, she couldn’t bring herself to forgive being deliberately targeted.
Not holding them accountable was already her biggest concession.
"Do you want to see Sheryl? I’ll have her apologize to you in person."
Just as Vesper Grayson was about to refuse, Casey Nash had already pulled her up and was walking straight towards the inpatient department.
Inside the hospital room, Sheryl Garland was eating a banana. She turned her head at the sound of the door opening. The moment she caught sight of Vesper Grayson, the unswallowed piece of banana got stuck in her throat. She began to cough violently, her face turning bright red.
Casey Nash rushed forward and patted her hard on the back. When that had little effect, she quickly handed her some water. After several minutes of struggle, the piece of fruit stuck in her throat was finally swallowed.
"Mom, what did you bring her here for!"
