Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Warning
Vesper poured her a glass of water and listened as she continued.
"It’s about the spokesperson for our jewelry line in the country. I know a movie star who I think would be a perfect fit, image-wise. I wanted to recommend her to you."
She hadn’t actually considered who to pick for the endorsement yet.
She’d heard the previous spokesperson was involved in a scandal and their contract with Vaudin had been terminated.
"Do you have her information?"
Elena tapped on her phone a couple of times.
"Sent."
Vesper opened it and glanced through the file. The woman was a popular rising starlet with an innocent face and striking looks. She had recently won Best Actress at the Golden Rooster Awards for her latest drama and was currently in high demand.
Vesper subtly probed, "You seem to like her a lot, Elena."
Elena’s lips curved. "I saw her helping an old lady cross the street on my way to work once, so I figured she must be a decent person. The spokesperson Vaudin needs has to be kind and innocent, without a lot of scandals. I looked into her private life—she’s had zero scandals since entering show business and is single and disciplined."
’So that’s why.’
"She does have a very delicate look. I’ll consider it."
"Okay."
Vesper never expected that before she even had a chance to contact the actress, she would run into this very same Roya Winters—known for her "pure little white flower" image—at Stellaris Plaza.
That evening after work, she got a call from Jared Hawthorne, telling her to meet him at Stellaris Plaza.
She had just arrived at the parking garage, and as she rounded a corner, she heard voices.
"Jamie Linton? Have you taken a good look at yourself? Someone like you thinks they can compete with me for Zane Rivers?"
"Roya Winters, I really didn’t... I-It was President Rivers who asked me to come."
"He asked you to come, so you came? Why are you such a slut? Don’t think you can seduce Zane just because he helped you once!"
"You... Roya Winters, it’s one thing for you to bully me, but how can you insult President Rivers like that?"
SLAP—
A sharp slap tore through the silence of the underground parking garage.
Vesper stopped in her tracks. Around the corner, a shocking spectacle unfolded before her eyes.
A shabbily dressed girl was being cornered by two other women. The one in the lead, despite her exquisite makeup, had a savage expression on her face.
As if sensing something, she glanced over. The viciousness she hadn’t had time to conceal twisted her delicate, supposedly innocent features.
Vesper wasn’t one to meddle in other people’s business. She coolly averted her gaze and started walking toward the elevator.
"Wait!"
The woman called out to her just as she was passing by.
"Is there something I can help you with?" Vesper asked, looking at her coolly.
"Do you know who I am?" Roya Winters asked, fixing her makeup and moving to block the disheveled woman she had just hit. She glared at Vesper with hostility.
"Miss Winters. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing you online."
’This afternoon, I even looked her up online and had Mr. Spencer investigate her.’
’To think I’d accidentally stumble upon this hidden side of her tonight.’
Hearing this, the color drained from Roya Winters’s face. "Since you know who I am, you should know what to say and what not to say. Watch your mouth, or you’ll regret it."
She had always maintained a pure, innocent, and harmless "little white flower" image to the public. But today, running into that slut Jamie Linton and thinking about how cold Zane Rivers had been to her recently, she couldn’t control her anger. She never thought someone would witness it.
Vesper gave a faint smile. She had no intention of getting involved in the first place, and she certainly wouldn’t be considering her as Vaudin’s spokesperson anymore.
"What are you smiling at?" Roya Winters warned coldly. "If a single word about what happened here gets out, I’ll make sure you regret it!"
Vesper ignored her and started to walk away.
Seeing Vesper disregard her warning, Roya Winters shot a look at her assistant.
The assistant stepped forward, blocking Vesper’s path.
"Miss, you have to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Otherwise, you’re not going anywhere today!"
It was the first time Vesper had ever heard such an absurd demand.
Her eyes grew cold. "You have no right to demand that of me, and I have no obligation to cooperate."
"That’s not up to you!" Roya Winters walked over, crossing her arms. Her gaze fell on Vesper’s exquisitely, almost unfairly beautiful face. She paused for a second, then said forcefully, "Finn Summers, go get the agreement."
A few minutes later, Finn Summers returned with a document.
"Sign it, and you can leave."
Vesper glanced at it and couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh.
"In the event of a breach of confidentiality, the undersigned must pay a penalty of one hundred million to the first party."
It was more tyrannical and unreasonable than any business contract.
"Hurry up. Don’t waste my time. Do you have any idea how precious my time is?" Roya Winters urged impatiently.
"Not a chance." Vesper tore the agreement to shreds and tossed the pieces over Roya’s head.
Roya Winters froze, then said coldly, "Do you know where you are? Do you know who my boyfriend is?"
"I don’t care who your boyfriend is. I said I’m not signing, and I’m not signing."
"You..."
She raised her hand to slap her, but Vesper’s eyes narrowed. She caught her wrist and gave her a hard shove. Caught off guard in her seven-centimeter heels, Roya Winters would have fallen flat on her face if her assistant hadn’t caught her just in time.
"I’m not your mother. I’m not going to spoil you," Vesper said, looking at her coldly.
Roya Winters pointed at her, furious. "You dare to lay a hand on me? I won’t let you get away with this."
"Northolme is a society governed by law. I don’t believe you can do whatever you want!"
"Miss, her boyfriend is President Rivers of Stellaris Plaza. You don’t want to get on her bad side," Jamie Linton whispered, moving closer to her.
’Whatever president he is, I’m President Grayson!’
Roya Winters had already made a call, her voice on the verge of tears. "Zane, I’m in the underground parking garage at Stellaris Plaza... someone’s bullying me..."
Vesper raised an eyebrow slightly. ’This woman really knows how to play the victim.’
’But why does this scene feel so familiar?’
’She could give the old Gwen Grayson a run for her money.’
「Upstairs, in a private room.」
Noah Nash finished a song, poured a glass of wine, and looked at Zane Rivers.
"This is good wine."
"If you like it, take a case with you when you leave."
"You’ve got class, Rivers."
Zane Rivers chuckled and turned to Jared Hawthorne. "Your uncle isn’t still mad at me, is he?"
Jared Hawthorne toyed with the wine glass in his hand and said nonchalantly, "If you want to know, call him and ask yourself."
"He won’t take my calls, and I don’t know where he is. That thing last time really wasn’t my doing. The manager misunderstood my intentions."
"You should cut back on the filthy business at your club. Try to build up some good karma for yourself."
"I can’t help it sometimes. But I’ve never forced anyone; it was always their own choice."
Just then, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and answered. "What’s going on?"
Listening to the person on the other end, Zane Rivers frowned. "Who’s got the nerve? Causing trouble for my people on my turf!"
"You wait there. I’m on my way."
Zane Rivers hung up and stood. "I’m going to take care of something."
"Hasn’t Miss Grayson arrived yet?" Noah Nash asked, checking the time. "Even with traffic, she should be here by now, right?"
A barely perceptible frown crossed Jared Hawthorne’s face as he dialed Vesper’s number.
"Where are you?"
