Chapter 95: Chapter 95: Good night, Prue
The others were curious too, and all eyes fell on her, waiting for an answer.
"I’m sorry, I can’t say."
If she hadn’t been worried about the shame of letting someone die—and having to face her grandmaster in the afterlife—she wouldn’t have gotten involved in the first place.
If her identity were discovered, she was afraid her life would never be peaceful again.
The doctor wouldn’t give up. "Miss, this is a great service to humanity. Many people around the world suffer from similar conditions. If you could just..."
"She already said she can’t. Are you deaf?" Jared Hawthorne stepped in front of Vesper Grayson, his sharp gaze radiating intimidation.
Sebastian Kensington lowered his gaze. "Since Miss Grayson is unwilling to elaborate, don’t embarrass yourself further. You may take your team and leave."
The butler stepped forward at the right moment and escorted them out.
"Miss Grayson, I can’t thank you enough for today. Otherwise, my grandmother might have..." Sebastian Kensington paused. "Please, ask for anything. If it’s within my power, I’ll make it happen."
Vesper Grayson gave a faint smile. "As the saying goes, ’saving a life is worth more than building a seven-story pagoda.’ It wasn’t Miss Kensington’s time to go. Her heart meridians are clear now, but her body has been depleted for far too long. She’s still very weak and will need careful nursing to slowly restore her foundation and replenish her vital energy."
She paused, then handed him a piece of paper.
"I’ve written a prescription tailored to her constitution. It should be prepared as a decoction and taken once in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. Please make sure she takes it on schedule."
Sebastian Kensington accepted the paper. The handwriting was elegant and neat, refined and delicate.
’Beautiful person, beautiful handwriting.’
From behind his lenses, his dark eyes fell upon Vesper Grayson, their depths darkening slightly.
Jared Hawthorne’s gaze darkened. He pulled Vesper Grayson behind him, blocking Sebastian’s view. His voice was cool. "Since Kensington is fine, we should be getting back to bed."
Vesper Grayson, "..."
’Did he really have to say the word "bed" in front of everyone? It was like he was saying it for their benefit.’
Sebastian Kensington lowered his gaze, a gentle smile touching his lips. "I’ll see you out."
Once outside, Vesper Grayson got into the car first.
The moment the door closed, Jared Hawthorne turned to face Sebastian Kensington, his expression unreadable. "I don’t want a word of what happened tonight getting out. If not for the debt I owe Kensington for her help years ago, I never would have let my girlfriend get involved."
Sebastian Kensington raised an eyebrow and smiled gently. "I’ve never heard of you being serious about anyone. Looks like this time it’s for real?"
Jared Hawthorne’s lips curved. "Don’t get too curious about her."
As he watched the car disappear, Sebastian Kensington chuckled softly.
’He must really be serious. Why else would he be so possessive? He gets jealous if I so much as look at her.’
He thought of Miss Grayson. With her stunning looks and god-like medical skills, it was hard not to be interested in a woman of such talent and beauty.
His gaze shifted to Julian Churchill, who was lying half-dead on the floor. His eyes turned cold and sharp.
"Send him and all the information we’ve gathered to the police."
...
On the way back, Vesper Grayson was still basking in the joy of having saved a life.
She hadn’t expected her first time saving someone to be such a success.
To pull someone back from the brink of death, step by step, and watch them gradually regain their vitality...
It filled her with an indescribable sense of accomplishment.
’If my grandmaster and my father could see me now, they would surely be proud of me.’
"What are you thinking about?"
She hadn’t said a word since getting in the car.
Vesper Grayson’s slender fingers wrapped around his wrist, her voice light and quick, unable to hide her excitement.
"Elias, did you see that? I actually saved Miss Kensington!"
A faint smile rippled in Jared Hawthorne’s narrow eyes as he answered warmly, "Yes, I saw. It was amazing."
’His Prue was as impressive as ever.’
Her almond eyes were sparkling like stars, her entire being radiating an unconcealable joy.
"You know, that was my first time performing acupuncture on a person. I was so nervous."
Jared Hawthorne’s lips curved slightly. "I know you were nervous, but you did an incredible job."
After returning to Citadel One and having breakfast, Vesper Grayson went upstairs to shower.
Jared Hawthorne took out his phone and made a call.
"Encrypt all of Vesper’s background information. I want you to handle it personally, right now."
"Yes, sir."
’The news of Miss Kensington’s recovery would be impossible to contain. Someone would inevitably follow the clues back to Vesper. Once people learned she was the successor to the Saint of Medicine and knew the Nine Dragon Acupuncture Technique, it would undoubtedly attract countless prying eyes and unnecessary trouble.’
Vesper Grayson felt refreshed after her shower.
Perhaps it was the excitement from saving a life for the first time, but despite not having slept all night, she didn’t feel tired at all. In fact, she felt strangely energized.
Hearing footsteps, she glanced toward the door.
Her eyes widened.
The man had just finished showering. A dark gray bathrobe was draped loosely around him, its sash tied carelessly at his waist, leaving the collar wide open.
Strands of his dark hair, still damp, clung to his forehead. A bead of water dripped from the ends, landing on his well-defined chest. It traced a slow path down his firm, smooth muscles, leaving a long, suggestive trail of moisture before disappearing into the depths of his robe.
The sight was both ascetic and searing, so sexy it made her breath catch in her throat.
Her cheeks flushed hot in an instant, and even her ears turned bright red.
Jared Hawthorne’s eyes darkened as he walked toward her, one step at a time.
He stopped at the edge of the bed and leaned over, gently trapping her beneath him. His breath was low and warm.
"Still awake? Waiting for me?"
Vesper Grayson’s heart hammered wildly in her chest. Her voice was as faint as a whisper. "...I can’t sleep."
The man let out a low chuckle, his Adam’s apple bobbing. A wicked, teasing smile played on his lips as he gave her a sidelong glance.
"Since you can’t sleep... let’s do something to help you drift off."
His large hand covered hers, guiding it to press gently against his warm, firm chest.
Vesper Grayson’s fingertips froze. She could clearly feel the hard, powerful lines of his taut muscles beneath the thin fabric. The heat seeping through the robe was scalding, making her fingertips tingle.
Her mind went blank, and she couldn’t stop herself from giving a subconscious squeeze.
’The texture... it’s incredible!’
By the time she realized what she’d done, her face was an even deeper shade of red. The blush spread from her cheeks to her ears and down her neck. Her fair skin, now flushed pink, looked like a delicious, sweet strawberry shortcake to him.
Jared Hawthorne’s gaze deepened. His voice, low and husky with a teasing magnetism, whispered next to her ear.
"Like it?"
Mortified, Vesper Grayson scrambled to pull her hand back, her voice soft and flustered.
"I... I’m going to sleep."
Jared Hawthorne chuckled helplessly. As much as he wanted to ’devour’ her right then and there, she’d had a long night, and he couldn’t bear to tire her out more.
’Besides, she’s on my turf now. There will be plenty of opportunities later.’
’There’s always tomorrow...’
He stopped teasing her and rolled onto his side, pulling her into his arms.
Vesper Grayson rested against his firm chest, breathing in his crisp, clean scent. His steady, powerful heartbeat filled her ears, a deeply reassuring sound.
A heavy wave of drowsiness washed over her. She closed her eyes, nestled in his warm embrace, and drifted into a deep sleep.
Once her breathing became slow and even, Jared Hawthorne’s dark eyes snapped open.
He looked down at the sleeping face nestled in his arms, his gaze so gentle it was almost reverent.
He pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"Good night, Prue."
