Cecelia Archer keenly noticed something unusual about President Miller’s smile.
’During the day, he was still lying in bed, having others bring him food and drinks. Now, at night, he can suddenly get up and even go for a walk?’
’Does he really want to talk about work?’
Recalling their last disagreement over renting the machinery, and with another procurement scheduled for tomorrow, Cecelia Archer assumed he was here to wear her down and seize control of the purchasing. She was speechless for a moment.
"It’s not that I don’t want to go with you. I accidentally stepped on a nail while working today. I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to worry everyone. Grandma King just finished putting medicine on it, and it hurts a lot... I’m sorry, President Miller, why don’t you come in instead? If you’re worried about people getting the wrong idea, we can leave the door open. With an elder like Grandma King here, it won’t be inappropriate."
"Oh, really? You stepped on a nail? Is it serious?"
President Miller offered a few words of feigned concern for Cecelia Archer. Seeing that she was adamant about not going out with him, he figured there would be plenty of other opportunities. He decided to let her off the hook for today.
"I don’t have anything particularly important to discuss. I just heard you all were going to procure materials tomorrow and wanted to remind you to be careful. Compare a few prices so you don’t get ripped off. Since you’re not feeling well, you should get some rest."
Just as he lay back down on his straw pallet, another message came from Gwen Morgan.
"It’s been half a month. Aren’t you ready yet?"
"Miss Morgan, I’ve already told you. I’ll make my move once the project is progressing smoothly. If a death occurs right after the Vaughn Group gets here, it’ll be bad for the company’s reputation and delay our work."
Gwen Morgan: "I’m not rushing you. Just checking on your progress. As long as you have a plan, that’s all that matters."
The next day, Miller announced that his back injury was much better and began to move about normally. No matter what Cecelia Archer said or did, he would insert himself, trying to get closer to her while looking for a chance to lure her somewhere secluded and eliminate her.
But Cecelia Archer didn’t want to get too close to him.
For one, there was a significant age gap between them. President Miller was also serious and old-fashioned, and Cecelia Archer felt they had a major clash of perspectives. She feared that if they got too close, the slightest disagreement would cause friction, just like when he first arrived. That would not only make President Miller uncomfortable but also leave their subordinates walking on eggshells.
Secondly, she felt the way President Miller had been looking at her lately was strange; she couldn’t tell if it was flirtatious or cautious. But regardless of his intentions, Cecelia Archer wanted no part in any rumors involving the two of them.
So Cecelia Archer avoided him whenever she could. When she couldn’t, she made a proposal in front of everyone.
"President Miller, I think it’s better if we work separately. This will save time, ensure everyone can go home for the New Year on time, and also allow you to get plenty of rest."
"I’ve thought about it. Your back is just healing, so it’s not suitable for you to travel far. You can be in charge of the school repairs in the village, and I’ll handle the power line installation and road construction."
President Miller was quite unhappy.
"President Linden, I’ve noticed you seem to be deliberately avoiding me. What’s wrong? Do you have a problem with me? Or do you think I’m saying or doing the wrong things, but you don’t want to point it out directly, so you’re using this method to push me aside?"
Cecelia Archer: "..."
"That’s not it, President Miller. I really am just trying to save time. Even if we’re working separately, we can still communicate in the group chat as soon as issues arise. If there’s a problem, just send a message. I promise to keep my phone on me and reply as soon as I see it."
’He’d tried to ask her to speak privately, but she’d refused.’
’He’d asked her to go for a walk at night, and she’d refused that too.’
The rest of the time, she was either surrounded by a crowd or sticking close to the village secretary’s wife or Grandma King.
’Although this remote mountain forest, with no cameras around, was the perfect god-given place to eliminate Cecelia Archer, this damn woman...’
President Miller was fuming at Cecelia Archer’s words, but since he couldn’t find any fault in her logic, he could only agree resentfully.
’Anyway, there’s still plenty of time. I’ll find my chance eventually!’
He hoped and waited, and finally, his chance arrived.
A month passed quickly. Two-thirds of the road to the village was built, the electricity was long since set up and connected to every household, and the school renovation was also nearing completion.
However, they were still short a bit of cement to pave the school playground and the road at the main entrance. It needed to be purchased, which presented a perfect opportunity to strike.
During lunch, President Miller proposed to Cecelia Archer that they go out to procure it together tomorrow.
’He’d ride the motorcycle with Cecelia Archer on the back. He had already scouted the location: a steep slope about a mile from the village. The turn was sharp and narrow, with a bottomless cliff right below.’
’He would pretend to have an accident there and send Cecelia Archer tumbling off the cliff. There was no way she would survive a fall like that!’
But after hearing him out, Cecelia Archer calculated the amount of cement they’d need and told him there was no reason to make a trip.
"We can just move a dozen or so bags from the road construction site. There’s no need to make a trip for such a small amount."
"For one, the section of road we paved today isn’t dry yet. Riding a motorcycle over it tomorrow would leave it full of ruts. For another, it’s just not worth the effort. The road will reach the village in ten days at most. We can go out then—it’ll be faster, easier, and more comfortable. Why wouldn’t we wait?"
President Miller had been planning this for so long, only to have her shoot it down with a single sentence. How could he possibly let that stand?
He suppressed his anger. "If we reallocate that much, what happens when the road crew runs out?"
Cecelia Archer said, "Let’s just use it and see. If we run short, we can ask the excavator operator to bring a few bags with him when he comes in. He has to come to work every day anyway; I’m sure he wouldn’t mind helping with something so small."
The others nodded. "He’d definitely be willing. We’ve known him for a while now, and that operator is a really easygoing guy."
President Miller was fuming.
’Why is it so damn hard to get a moment alone with this woman?’
’He couldn’t get to her even with a carefully laid plan disguised as work. Once the project was finished, his chances would be even slimmer, wouldn’t they?’
So, no matter what, President Miller had to succeed this time!
"No. This isn’t about a few bags of cement. I have to go out tomorrow."
"Didn’t you say it yourself? I’m in charge of the school, and you’re in charge of the other two projects. Now there’s a problem in my jurisdiction, so I should be the one to solve it. What would it look like if I just pawned the pressure off on you?"
"Tomorrow, I’m not just going out, I’m taking a few of the guys from our team with me, and you should come along too. We’ll find a bathhouse and get a proper wash. It’s embarrassing, but we’ve been here for so long and none of us has had a real bath. We’re all so filthy we can barely stand to be seen."
When he said the first part, everyone thought he was being unreasonable—overly obsessed with his pride, petty, and unable to see the bigger picture.
But when they heard the second part, everyone’s eyes lit up.
"A bath? That’s amazing! It’s been forever! At night, we can barely sleep because of the smell when we take our clothes off. We’ve been dying for a wash!"
"President Linden, it’s not fair for just some of us to go! Let’s just take the day off tomorrow and all head to the county town for a nice, long bath!"
Cecelia Archer hadn’t wanted to delay the work.
But seeing how excited everyone got at the mention of a bath—they had all arrived so clean-cut, and now they were covered in grime...
"With all of you saying this, you’d all hate my guts if I said no, wouldn’t you?"
"Yeah!"
Everyone jumped up happily.
