Cecelia Archer didn’t want to spoil everyone’s fun, so she made a last-minute decision to give them a day off.

The next morning, everyone changed into clean clothes. Two to a motorcycle, they excitedly headed into the county town.

The biggest and most luxurious hotel in town was only a 4-star. Cecelia Archer booked five rooms, and everyone took turns enjoying a proper shower. When they emerged, they felt like new people.

"I swear, when I get back, I’ll never complain about work being hard or my life being unhappy again. Coming home to a hot meal, having hot water, working somewhere out of the wind and rain—that’s true happiness. There’s nothing like a little hardship to make you appreciate what you have."

Seeing how the ordeal had made everyone lose weight, Cecelia Archer treated them to a feast.

After lunch, the group, who had been cooped up for far too long, were still eager for more. Not wanting to head back so early, they went to a KTV and sang for over three hours, only starting back from the county town at four o’clock.

Cecelia Archer was about to get on Lee’s motorcycle as usual, but Miller had already made his move.

"President Linden, I have a work matter to discuss with you. Get on my bike. We can talk on the way."

’Work stuff again?’

’We spent the whole day having fun and he didn’t mention work once. Now, when we’re riding motorcycles in the freezing wind, he suddenly has something important to discuss.’

Cecelia Archer didn’t want to, but with so many people watching, she couldn’t embarrass Miller by refusing.

"Your back injury just healed. The mountain roads are rough. Won’t I be a burden sitting behind you?"

"Not at all. My back’s been fine for a while."

As Miller spoke, he had already gotten on the motorcycle and started the engine, looking at her with an eager expression.

"Come on, get on."

Cecelia Archer could only brace herself and get on his bike.

VROOM—VROOM—VROOM—

One by one, the motorcycles took off.

They rode for a while without Miller saying a word. Cecelia Archer couldn’t help but ask.

"President Miller, didn’t you have something to discuss with me?"

"What?"

In truth, Miller was wearing a helmet, and with the cold wind whistling past his ears, he couldn’t hear Cecelia Archer at all.

When Cecelia Archer saw him dangerously tilting his head to try and hear her, she decided to just drop it.

"I said, slow down! There’s no rush; safety first. We can talk about whatever it is when we get back."

Miller nodded, and they rode the rest of the way in silence.

After riding for over an hour, the sky began to darken. They finally reached the turnoff for the village.

Everyone else had ridden faster than Miller and were waiting for him at the entrance.

When they saw Miller and Cecelia Archer arrive, they all chimed in.

"President Miller, why don’t you let President Linden get off? We can give her a ride."

Although they had repaired the concrete road, the weather was cold and it was setting slowly, so the motorcycles still couldn’t ride on it. On their way out, they had used the small dirt path alongside it.

In spots that were particularly difficult to navigate, you had to put your legs down to steady the bike. Miller’s back had just healed; they didn’t want him to overexert himself.

Normally, their concern would be a good thing, but President Miller looked displeased, as if his male ego had been wounded.

"I’m a grown man, you think I can’t even handle a young woman on my bike? Do I look like I need your help? Stop worrying about nothing! Go, go, go! It’s getting dark, what are you all dawdling for? Get a move on!"

Everyone was a bit speechless, but since he was the boss, no one dared to say anything more. They just continued on, one after the other.

Although Cecelia Archer was on the back of Miller’s motorcycle, she didn’t want to be anywhere near him. There was a gap of a good two inches between them.

Once the motorcycle was on the narrow path, it started to twist and lurch, making Cecelia Archer feel very insecure. She desperately wanted to get off and walk. But seeing the way Miller’s arms strained as he wrenched the handlebars back and forth, she held back, afraid of wounding his pride.

The younger, stronger riders were bold and daring, and their motorcycles sped ahead until even the sound of their engines faded. Miller, however, was still wobbling along halfway up the mountainside.

The sky grew darker, and Cecelia Archer’s patience finally ran out.

"President Miller, maybe I should get off and walk. The ground here is too soft. It would be bad if the motorcycle got stuck. Also, could you turn on the headlight? It’s getting hard to see."

Actually, this slope was perfect for throwing Cecelia Archer off and staging an accident.

Unfortunately, while the slope was right, it was flanked by earthy hills, not a cliff. Even if she rolled down, the worst she’d get was a broken bone. She wouldn’t die.

If not for that, President Miller would have loved to finish her off right then and there.

He was dead tired, but he thought to himself: ’Just need to get over this peak. Once we’re over this peak and down the next slope, that corner will be her final resting place!’

"It’s fine. Didn’t you say to go slowly for safety? I’m only going this slow because I was afraid you’d be scared. Just sit tight, don’t worry."

Seeing that he seemed to have things under control, Cecelia Archer could only remain seated.

The two of them dawdled on that slope for nearly ten minutes before finally making it over.

At the top, the motorcycle was at a high vantage point. From here, Cecelia Archer could see the village in the distance, and she breathed a sigh of relief.

’We’ll be back in the village soon. I’m never being alone with Miller again. This is just too awkward.’

The thought had barely crossed her mind when Miller sent the motorcycle roaring down the slope. In the blink of an eye, they reached the deadly curve.

Even though they had passed this way several times, every time Cecelia Archer glanced at the bottomless cliff beside them, her heart would pound with fear.

’They really should build a guardrail here,’ Cecelia Archer thought silently. ’Otherwise, a single slip-up, a moment of inattention, and the bike would go right off the edge—a fatal plunge.’

Just as she was thinking this, the motorcycle, right in the middle of the turn, came to a stop.

Ahead, it was pitch-black. There was only the motorcycle’s headlight, a warm yellow beam with a visibility of less than two meters.

The wind howled in her ears, small pebbles occasionally tumbled from the rockface above, and to her right was still the thousand-foot drop...

Cecelia Archer’s heart gave an uncontrollable lurch.

"What’s wrong, President Miller? Why have we stopped?"

President Miller’s helmeted head was round and bulky, like a big, black, featureless ball in the hazy darkness.

He didn’t turn around. His voice was muffled.

"Can’t go. The bike’s broken down."

Cecelia Archer: "What?!"

He kicked out the stand, planting the motorcycle on the narrow mountain path.

"Sorry to trouble you, but could you get off for a second? Let me see what the problem is."

’Of all the times and all the places for it to break down, it had to be here and now!’

Cecelia Archer carefully got off the motorcycle, clutching her chest as she pressed herself against the base of the mountain wall.

With her back against the wall, she finally felt a sliver of security.

Miller got off the motorcycle as well, pulled out the key, turned on his phone’s flashlight, and crouched down, making a show of inspecting the bike.

The motorcycle’s headlight died, plunging them into near-total darkness.

In the faint light of his phone, he sized up the distance and positioning between himself and Cecelia Archer, pondering how he could push her off cleanly without getting hurt himself.

’This woman clings to life too much. She’s pressed up against the mountain wall as if she’s terrified of falling. It’s a bad spot to make a move.’

After a moment’s thought, Miller decided he had to keep deceiving Cecelia Archer.

"Looks like the clutch is busted, and the brakes aren’t great. I’ll try to fix it. Do me a favor and hold my phone."
